Previous Co-op Sessions

ABB Power System- Wickliffe, OH: Spring 2013

Assist with upgrading control systemDuke Energy Environmental- Plainfield, IN: Fall 2013

Samples for water qualities Calculate air emissions

Environmental- Trenton, OH: Summer 2014 Update oil spill plans Improving Madison Station’s CEMS Working with operators

Boiler Inspection

Purpose: Inspect for issues with boiler that would cause a performance issue within the next 8 years

What I did: Inspect and write up punch lists Outcomes: Issues found and prioritize to be

fixed for this outage or the next

9

Chemical Clean

Purpose: remove iron in boiler done every 10-15 years

Chemicals from HydroChem 4% Hydroxyacetic acid 2% Formic Acid

My scope of work Revision of Procedure Time of Chemical Clean: tell operators when

to open and close valves

When the Polishers are taken out of service

1100+ running hours PI: Overall Effluent limits

14

Without the Analyzers

High possibility that ions will slip through the exhausted resin

Causes damage to turbine

Ideal Diaphragm

Actual Unit 3 High Pressure Diaphragm

Analyzers

Analyzers: Sodium and Cation Conductivity Grab samples: Chloride, Sulfate, Silica and

Total Organic Carbons (TOC)

19

Actions being done

Waiting for approval Sentry quote: $21,520 plus $1,700 for travels

Find and check lines Replace valves Place olet fittings on cooling lines

Able to work online to extend piping to new panel

Before After

20

With Analyzers

21

Without Analyzers on Intermediate Pressure Rotors

Cost $3 million to repair the HI and IP of the turbine

Includes sandblasting the iron off

Repaired highly eroded parts
