Something to Answer ForPercy Howard Newby
It was 1956 and he was in Port Said. About these two facts Townrow was reasonably certain. He
had been summoned there, to Egypt, by the widow of his deceased friend, Elie Khoury. Having
been found dead in the street, she is convinced he was murdered, but nobody seems to agree
with her. What of Leah Strauss, the mistress?
The Elected MemberBernice Rubens
Norman is the clever one of a closely-knit Jewish family in London's East End. Infant
prodigy, brilliant barrister, the apple of his parents' eyes—until at 41 he becomes a
drug addict, confined to his bedroom, at the mercy of his hallucinations and paranoia.
In a Free StateV.S. Naipaul
In the beginning it is just a car trip through Africa. Two English people--Bobby, a civil
servant with a guilty appetite for African boys, and Linda, a supercilious compound
wife -- are driving back to their enclave after a stay in the capital. But in between lies
the landscape of an unnamed country whose squalor and ethnic bloodletting suggest
Idi Amin's Uganda.

partes.
The Siege of Krishnapur
James Gordon Farrell
Farrell's story is set in an isolated Victorian outpost on the subcontinent. Rumors of
strife filter in from afar, and yet the members of the colonial community remain
confident of their military and, above all, moral superiority. But when they find
themselves under actual siege, the true character of their dominion--at once brutal,
blundering, and wistful--is soon revealed.
The Conservationist Nadine Gordimer
Mehring is rich. He has all the privileges and possessions that South Africa has to
offer, but his possessions refuse to remain objects. His wife, son, and mistress leave
him; his foreman and workers become increasingly indifferent to his stewarsship;
even the land rises up, as drought, then flood, destroy his farm.
Y nadie parece cuestionarlo

Heat and DustRuth Prawer Jhabvala
Set in colonial India during the 1920s, Heat and Dust tells the story of Olivia, a
beautiful woman suffocated by the propriety and social constraints of her position as
the wife of an important English civil servant. Longing for passion and independence,
Olivia is drawn into the spell of the Nawab, a minor Indian prince deeply involved ingang raids and criminal plots.
Calor y polvo
SavilleDavid Storey
This is the story of Colin Saville, a miner's son, and his growth from the 1930s on, his
rise in the world by way of grammar school and college. At first there is triumph in
this, not least for the father who had spurred him on, but later "alienated from his
class, and with nowhere yet to go" Colin finds himself spiritually destitute, bitter, stillheld against his will in the place that made him.
Staying OnPaul Scott
Tusker and Lily Smalley stayed on in India. Given the chance to return 'home' when
Tusker, once a Colonel in the British Army, retired, they chose instead to remain in the
small hill town of Pangkot, with its eccentric inhabitants and archaic rituals left over

his life to protect Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland and who was transformed by the war
into a man with a mission, a compassionate angel of mercy.

Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-
hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-
jokes, rumour and wit.
Bring Up the BodiesHilary Mantel
The volatile Anne Boleyn is now Queen, her career seemingly entwined with that of
Cromwell. The split from the Catholic Church has left England dangerously isolated, and
Anne has failed to give the king an heir. And when the King begins to fall in love with
self-effacing Jane Seymour, the ever-pragmatic Cromwell must negotiate within an
increasingly perilous court to satisfy Henry, defend the nation and, above all, to secure
his own rise in the world.
The LuminariesEleanor Catton
It is 1866, and young Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand
goldfields. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of
twelve local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of unexplained events: A
wealthy man has vanished, a prostitute has tried to end her life, and an enormous
fortune has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk.

tratos y leva anclas.
The Narrow Road to the Deep NorthRichard Flanagan
Moving deftly from a Japanese POW camp to present-day Australia, from the experiences
of Dorrigo Evans and his fellow prisoners to that of the Japanese guards, this savagely
beautiful novel tells a story of the many forms of love and death, of war and truth, as one
man comes of age, prospers, only to discover all that he has lost.
A Brief History of Seven KillingsMarlon James
On December 3, 1976, just before the Jamaican general election and two days before Bob
Marley was to play the Smile Jamaica Concert to ease political tensions in Kingston, seven
unnamed gunmen stormed the singer’s house, machine guns blazing.
