1 Remote Display System1.1 OverviewThis document describes the basic configuration of the VEGA devices connected to the Remote Display System. The configurations described are necessary for the accuracy and proper operation of the Remote Display System level monitoring, system alarms, and displays.
1.2 System OperationThe VEGA level measurement device, in combination with the RD, provide the level information to the Remote Display. Each RD can handle one (1) VEGA, 2-wire HART device. The Remote Display interface can display level, percent (%), scaled value, and distance. The following requirements are necessary for the proper operation:
You must attach devices to the RD with the field devices set for HART Multidrop mode.
Each device connected to the RD must have a HART address in the range of 1.
The RD communicates with the VEGA PLICSCOM using I2C communication.
1.3 System FeaturesThe RD system has the following features:
Power options via battery. Numeric visualization: Scaled measured values display on the backlit
LCD screen. Connect to any VEGA two-wire HART multidrop device.
Note: Do not use the device in the standard 4 ... 20 mA mode. Using the device in this mode drains the batteries.!

On-demand level, using the local push button. Energy Saving automatic off feature: Turns display off after a preset
period of time. Saves on battery life. Remote programming and configuration via PLICSCOM. Constructed of robust materials: NEMA 4X enclosure with locking
stainless steel latches. Battery life: 2.5 years based on 30 minutes of daily operating time.
PACTwareTMPACTware (Process Automation Configuration Tool) is a protocol-independent software for the adjustment of all types of field instruments. This software is VEGAs preferred tool for setting up and adjusting the detector.
Connection of the PC with VEGACONNECTUse the interface converter VEGACONNECT for a temporary connection of the PC. For example, use the interface converter for a parameter adjustment. The necessary IC interface at the radar is available with all instrument versions. On the computer, the connection is made using a USB cable.Connect to the radar using the VEGACONNECT 4 and a Windows-based computer running PACTware, supported with the VEGA DTM collection.
Set up the Connection with VEGACONNECTThe device provides options for establishing a connection to the PC running PACTware. Refer to the VEGACONNECT connection drawing below to establish a connection.

PACTware Software StartupYou can adjust all VEGA, 2-wire HART devices using a Windows PC. To complete this adjustment, you need the configuration software PACTware and a suitable instrument driver (DTM) according to the FDT standard. In addition, you can also integrate the VEGA DTMs in other frame applications according to the FDT standard. For a connection, either the interface converter VEGACONNECT or a USB is required. A basic understanding of PACTware and VEGA DTMs is required to properly configure the Remote Display Systems.Follow these steps to start the PACTware software:1. To open PACTware, complete one of the following:
Click the Windows Start, All Programs, PACTware, PACTware X.X. Double-click the PACTware 4.X shortcut on your desktop.
Set up Project Tree with VEGA Project AssistantIn the left pane of the PACTware dialog box, the HOST PC is the only item that appears and is where the project tree is built. The project tree is a series of connections between the PC and the gauge. To automatically build a project tree, make sure you are connected to a gauge that is powered up.1. From the Project menu, click VEGA project assistant.2. Select the Connect devices (Online) check box.3. Click Start to connect your sensor.
Note: PACTware adds and connects the devices automatically. When there is a # sign after the device, PACTware is finished connecting to that gauge. If the setup process with VEGA project assistant does not add and connect a device automatically, see the PACTware manual included on the CD that came with your shipment. If the CD is not available, refer to the PACTware online help. Both of these items will guide you through the steps for setting up the project tree manually.

1.4 System BatteryIndications of low batteries include:

The batteries for the RD are located two removable trays. The battery trays are mounted on the right side of the RD. The power supply board must be removed in order to replace batteries.

All eight batteries should be replaced at the same time. Make certain you follow the proper polarity during battery installation.
The VEGA device stores the configuration data for the RD. When replacing the batteries, configuration settings are still in this memory. To replace batteries (power supply and display boards), complete the following steps:1. Turn the Source Selector Switch to OFF.2. If the RD is mounted in a hazardous location, take it to a non-hazardous
location.3. Open the RD.4. Remove the two battery trays.5. Remove the old batteries from the battery trays.6. Install the new batteries in both trays, paying close attention to battery
polarity.7. Install the battery trays back into the back plate.8. Close the door and hatch.9. Remount the unit.10. Push the Level button.11. Check the display for proper operation.
Never replace batteries in a Class 1, Div 2 area (or any hazardous area).
Make certain you place the Source Selector Switch to the OFF position when changing the batteries.
Dispose of the lithium batteries using approved local methods.

2 Radar Configuration with PACTware2.1 Configuration ProcessPACTware (Process Automation Configuration Tool) is a protocol-independent software for the adjustment of all types of field instruments. This software is VEGAs preferred tool for setting up and adjusting the device.
Change Multidrop AddressIf multidrop addresses are not set, you must connect to each devices I2C connection independently. Once you are online and connected with the radar, change or set the HART Multidrop address in the radar unit with the following steps:1. From the Parameter menu bar, select the Options menu.2. From the Options menu, click Modify address in the instrument.

Change Measurement Loop NameThe measurement loop name is a unique identifier (16 characters maximum). If the name is provided at the time of your order, the parameter was entered at VEGA prior to shipment.1. If the name was not provided, type the measurement loop name (16
characters is the maximum) in the Measurement loop name box.2. Click Apply.

Note: In order for your radar to work with the RD, make certain the radar is in the multidrop mode and has a unique address. Each device on the network must have a unique address. Addresses on the HART Loop cannot have any duplicate addresses.

ApplicationYour sensor ships from VEGA with default factory settings. You should change the application your sensor is set to measure with the following steps:1. Click the plus (+) symbol next to the Setup parameter menu to expand the
menu.2. From the Type of medium list, click Liquids.3. From the Medium list, click Solvents/Liquified gases/Oils DK < 3.4. From the Application list, click Storage tank.5. From the Vessel top list, click Flat.6. From the Vessel bottom list, click Flat.7. In the Vessel height/Measuring range box, type the measurement point
on the radar to the bottom of the tank.
Note: The Distance B (mix. adjustment) is the distance from the radar sensor reference to the minimum adjustment or 0% fill point of the tank. The radar sensor reference is from the top of the NPT threads or top of the flange to the bottom of the tank or measurement range.

False Signal SuppressionFalse signal suppression stores the false echoes in memory from the reference plane of the sensor to the actual distance of the product surface. Struts, weld seams, agitators, man-ways, internal ladders, or anything that causes a reflection of the radar or ultrasonic pulse results in false echoes.
EchoesEchoes are signals received at the sensor that originated from the sensor after they reflected off some surface. Ideally, the sensor should only track the echo that reflects off the product surface. PACTware evaluates each echo and assigns it some probability that the echo is from the product surface. The echo with the highest echo probability is the one tracked and used for the measurement. Other echoes, not reflected from the product surface, are false echoes. PACTware dismisses or learns out any echoes outside the operating range and does not assign an echo probability.

3 Radar Configuration with PLICSCOM3.1 OverviewPLICSCOM is the indicating and adjustment unit for VEGA PLICS sensors. The following sections contain information primarily as an aid in setting basic sensor parameters. Follow the required basic parameters for new instrument setup in the order depicted. Bus addressing and information for resetting the instrument are also included in the sections that follow.

3.2 System OperationThe VEGA level measurement device provides level information to the RD, the DCS (Display and Control System), or can act as a stand-alone device using the PLICSCOM. The following requirements are necessary for proper operation:

Make certain the devices are attached to a source of power.
Ensure that each device, if connected to a bus system, has a unique address or a conflict may occur.
Make sure the HART addresses are in the range of one (1) to 15. You cannot have duplicate addresses.
3.3 PLICSCOM FeaturesUsed the PLICSCOM, in conjunction with this guide, for configuration of the following features:

3.4 PACTwarePACTware (Process Automation Configuration Tool) is a protocol-independent software, used with an interface converter, VEGACONNECT, for a temporary connect of the PC for the adjustment of many types of field instruments. This software is VEGAs preferred tool for parmeterization and customization of PLICS sensors where some adjustments are beyond the capabilities of the PLICSCOM.
Note: See the operating instructions that came with your equipment for the power requirements of your unit.

Power Source Selector Switch
RD Wiring for AC and DC PowerBefore beginning any wiring, make certain you use wire that meets the local electrical code.
Universal PowerThe power source voltage is 20 to 250 volts AC/DC. Do not share AC power with transient producing loads. The wiring must be in conduit. Power connections are made to the terminal strip in the power panel. The pin out for the external power terminal connections are as follows:
RD Internal Battery PowerThe battery power supply for the RD uses eight (8) 3.6 V, Lithium AA cell batteries. Depending on the environmental conditions and usage, these batteries

The RD manages the power to the loop powered sensor to maximize battery life.
RD Battery TypeThe following two (2) approved battery types have a temperature rating for the full operating temperature range of the RD.
Solar Power and External Battery PackUsing a solar pack or an external battery pack to power the MRD, requires the correct installation to the external source terminals. Complete the following steps to connect to the solar or external battery pack.1. Turn the power source selector switch to OFF.2. Connect the positive terminal of the power source to the L1 (+) terminal of
the power supply board.3. Connect the negative terminal of the power source to the N (-) terminal of the
power supply board.
Battery ReplacementDetermine if you need to replace the batteries by performing a battery voltage test. Other indications that the batteries are low include:

Note: Change all eight (8) batteries at the same time for optimum performance.

The batteries for the RD are located two removable trays. The battery trays are mounted on the right side of the RD. The power supply board must be removed in order to replace batteries. All eight batteries should be replaced at the same time. Make certain you follow the proper polarity during battery installation.
The VEGA device stores the configuration data for the RD. When replacing the batteries, configuration settings are still in this memory. To replace batteries (power supply and display boards), complete the following steps:1. If the RD is mounted in a hazardous location, take it to a non-hazardous
location.2. Open the RD.3. Remove the two battery trays.4. Remove the old batteries from the battery trays.5. Install the new batteries in both trays, paying close attention to battery
polarity.6. Install the battery trays back into the back plate.7. Close the door and hatch.8. Remount the unit.9. Push the Level button.10. Check the display for proper operation.
Never replace batteries in a Class 1, Div 2 area (or any hazardous area).
Dispose of the lithium batteries using approved local methods.

4. If damaged, return for repair to VEGADIS 363 Service or VEGA Service
5. Check for crack on relay base or broken pins on the relay
6. Check for proper polarity installation on batteries
7. Turn off relay and reset the radar power
8. Turn reset the radar power ON-TIME
9. Press and hold level push button for 5 seconds
10. If radar does not work, check RD box with known good radar or check the radar on a known good RD box

5.4 VEGADIS 363 Advanced Service Troubleshooting Tips*1. If no voltage check wires and fuse. If low voltage, replace batteries
2. If battery voltage is not 3.6VDC (+/- 5%) replace batteries
3. If no voltage at terminals 1(+) & 2(-) check or replace relay
4. Check for proper terminations of wire under screw terminals (no insulation under terms)
5. If box still does not work, send to VEGA service for repair
