WHAT IS A CRYSTAL?A crystal is a solid whose atoms, ions or molecules are arranged in a “highly ordered”
repeating pattern. These patterns are called crystal lattices. There are seven crystal lattice
patterns: cubic, tetragonal, rhombohedral (or trigonal), hexagonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic,
and triclinic. X-Rays can be used to determine the positions of atoms within a crystal and
unravel its three-dimensional structure
It is symmetric and anisotropic
Important concepts related to CRYSTALLIZATION :
SOLUBILITY The maximum amount of solute that can be
dissolved in a certain volume of solvent at a given temperature. It
usually increases with an increase of temperature.
SUPERSATURATION is a state of a solution that contains more of the
dissolved material than could be dissolved by the solvent under
normal circumstances.
NUCLEATION a small number of ions, atoms, or molecules become arranged in a pattern
characteristic of a crystalline solid, forming a site upon which additional particles are
deposited as the crystal grows.
The goals set at the beginning of scientific work have been outscored. We have all learned the
basic concepts like supersaturated solution, the importance of temperature, handling much
labware, achieving a certain autonomy in the laboratory, coordination with partners from different
levels and the development of laboratory notebook. But we have also realized that in science, we
have to improvise and to adopt the technique of trial and error, because with the theoretical
amounts of salt, we did not get good results and finally we added salt until precipitate .

WEAK SUPERSATURATION LARGER CRYSTALS
GREAT SUPERSATURATION SMALLER CRYSTALS
