Historical background :o Niagara Falls formed 12000 years ago
o First discovered by a French explorer in December
1678, also known as Father Louis Hennepin.
o When he returned to France, Hennepin published
an account of his travels in "A New Discovery."
The book brought Niagara Falls to the attention of
the western world for the first time and inspired
further exploration of the region
Historical background :o The tremendous volume of water never stops flowing.
o However, The flow of water was stopped completely over
both falls on March 29th 1848 due to an ice jam in the
upper river for several hours.
o In 1969, the flow over the American Falls was stopped
completely for several months.
o The word "Niagara" is derived from the Iroquois Indian
word "Onguiaahra" meaning "the strait" There is an
international boundary between the United States and
Canada.
o The potential power of Niagara Falls attracted industrialists who worked to
harness its force using waterwheels to drive their mills and factories.
o The world’s first large-scale hydroelectric generating station opened in Niagara
Falls in 1895.
Fun Fact:
o Hydroelectricity is one of Niagara Falls’
most important products. Together, power
plants on both the American and Canadian
sides of the falls produce nearly 2.5 million
kilowatts of electricity.
