Pensamientos del Padre José Mario . .

P. Jos Mario

Thoughts from Father José Mario . . .
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
Dear friends, this Sunday we have a Gospel that
announces the coming of the Son of Man and the
signs that will accompany it. These apocalyptic
signs are a common description in the Bible for the
day God will restore all things. Also, these readings
are proper for the end of the liturgical calendar. I like Jesus’ lesson of the
fig tree, where he teaches that there are always signs that precede an
event, as we can notice how summer is coming by noticing the sprouting
of branches and leaves in a fig tree. There are other instances in the
Gospel where Jesus points to the signs in nature to interpret weather
and other events. A practical example for us here in the Midwest is the
changing colors of the trees’ leaves announcing fall. Signs that precede
an event can teach us how to better prepare; and that is what Jesus is
trying to convey in this Sunday’s Gospel.
Along the lines of paying attention to signs, in our Church Tradition we
have a phrase to designate the responsibility we each have to under-
stand the world in which we live so as to be effective in our task to
preach the Gospel of Jesus: the signs of the times. This phrase was first
used as such by Pope Saint John XXIII in two of his encyclical letters. It
also was a foundational idea for the content of the Second Vatican
Council. Gaudium et Spes, a pastoral constitution from Second Vatican
Council, reads: To carry out such a task, the Church has always had the
duty of scrutinizing the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the
light of the Gospel (GS 4). The task the council refers to is the one of
carrying forward the work of Jesus, and to be able to do that effectively
the church must recognize and understand the world we live in.
This, I think, is an invitation to learn from the world, not to shut it down.
We must learn from history, science, medicine, sociology, anthropology,
literature and all the different human activities. This is an invitation to
listen to one another and to open our minds to the world to be able to
understand it. Just like learning “to read” the fig tree, we must learn “to
read” the world we live in--all this with the purpose of continuing to do
what it has been entrusted to us to do: proclaim the love and the mercy
of God to all creatures.

Gift giving is a wonderful expression of goodwill and
love for others and is an important part of the Christ-
mas Season! In this time of joyful preparation for the birth of
Christ, let our gift of giving be done in remembrance of the greatest
gift of all…Jesus!
This year, our Giving Tree project will begin the weekend of Novem-
ber 27-28 and continue through Sunday, December 12.
St. Edward and St. Richard can resume the use of decorated
Christmas Mitten Trees. Please select one or more mitten orna-
ments from the tree located in the back of church. Purchase the
items on the mitten and return the gift the following week.
There will be large bins in the back of church, labeled with each
charity. Please place your unwrapped gift with the mitten ornament
attached to it in the correctly labeled bin. Please turn in ALL gifts
no later that Sunday, December 12th, after the last mass. Gifts will
be delivered the following day to their charities.
St. Patrick parishioners will follow the same procedure as last year:
purchasing gift cards for distribution to either John XXIII Educa-
tional Center families or to veterans served by Veterans Outreach.
More information will appear on St. Patrick’s bulletin page next
week and on its website and Facebook page.
