From the Pastor To Open Hearts to God
Dear Parishioners,
The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The feast that we celebrate today. The 11 disciples with Mary gathered together after Easter, and they experienced mixed feelings when they saw the risen Lord; they were happy, excited, but at the same time, they were fearful. Many times when Jesus appeared to them, He said “peace be with you”. He needed to emphasize to them that they will not be alone, and therefore he gave them his spirit. It was the Holy Spirit that enabled them not to fear anymore and on the contrary set off the beginning of the announcement of Jesus’ message to the world and therefore the early church began her journey, always guided by the Holy Spirit until today.
How certain was the statement of Jesus about his church when he said to Peter that not even death will ever be able to overcome it. The Holy Spirit changed these fearful disciples into courageous men able to give their lives for Christ as not only them but to all the martyrs of the Church. It was the Holy Spirit, which is the spirit of Jesus, who has been present in history with all the faithful who open their hearts to God.
It is fascinating to recognize that at Pentecost the disciples spoke in foreign languages to all people who gathered in Jerusalem at that time for the Jewish feast of Pentecost or feast of the seven weeks, in which they came in pilgrimage to thank God in giving them the law at Sinai. What happened at Pentecost in which people who spoke Greek, or Latin, or Arab, or Egyptian, or all ancient languages, were able to understand the disciples in their own language, it was an event where we must recognize how the power of the Holy Spirit makes one people who are different.
We are brothers and sisters because of the Holy Spirit. I see the friendship of many of the volunteers and parishioners here at St Stephen that are not related by blood; it is only the Holy Spirit who makes us one. All the efforts that we make to become one community are not ours but the Holy Spirit. Because what the Holy Spirit does in peoples’ hearts is to make us humble, kind and gentle.

Pentecostés por el derramamiento del Espíritu Santo. La fiesta que celebramos hoy. Los 11
discípulos con María se reunieron después de Pascua, y experimentaron un sentimiento mixto
cuando vieron al Señor resucitado. Estaban felices, emocionados, pero al mismo tiempo, tenían miedo.
Muchas veces, cuando Jesús se les apareció, dijo “la paz sea contigo”. Necesitaba enfatizarles que no
estarían solos, y por lo tanto les dio su espíritu. Fue el Espíritu Santo el que les permitió no temer más y,
por el contrario, iniciar el anuncio del mensaje de Jesús al mundo y, por lo tanto, la iglesia primitiva
comenzó su jornada guiada siempre por el Espíritu Santo hasta el día de hoy.
Cuán cierta era la declaración de Jesús acerca de su iglesia cuando le dijo a Pedro que ni siquiera la
muerte podrá vencerla. El Espíritu Santo transformó a estos temibles discípulos en hombres valientes
capaces incluso de dar la vida por Cristo no solo a ellos sino a todos los mártires de la
Iglesia. Fue el Espíritu Santo, que es el espíritu de Jesús, quien ha estado presente
en la historia con todos los fieles que abren sus corazones a Dios.
Es fascinante reconocer que en Pentecostés los discípulos hablaron en lenguas
extranjeras a todas las personas que se reunieron en Jerusalén en ese momento para la fiesta judía de Pentecostés o fiesta de las siete semanas en que
peregrinaron para agradecer a Dios al darles la ley en el Sinaí Lo que sucedió en Pentecostés en el que
las personas que hablaban griego, latín, árabe o egipcio, o todas las lenguas antiguas, fueron capaces de entender a los discípulos en su propio idioma, fue un evento donde debemos reconocer cómo el poder
del Santo El espíritu hace a personas diferentes. Somos hermanos y hermanas por el Espíritu Santo.
Veo la amistad de muchos de los voluntarios y feligreses aquí en San Esteban que no están
relacionados por sangre; solo el Espíritu Santo es quien nos hace uno. Todos los esfuerzos que
hacemos para convertirnos en una comunidad no son nuestros sino el Espíritu Santo. Porque lo que el
Espíritu Santo hace en los corazones del las personas es hacernos humildes, amables y gentiles.
