There is a new language that we need to learn – internet slang. Slang is informal language that changes

all the time as new words are added. Internet slang is an informal way to write on the internet. This new

way to write originated in order to save keystrokes – the number of times you use a key (button) on your

computer keyboard. Internet slang words have developed from common phrases that people simplify to

be able to write faster and communicate as quickly as possible.

Abbreviations are probably the most-used kind of internet slang. A simple three- or four-letter

abbreviation can be used instead of a phrase. For example, “TTYL" means "Talk To You Later",

“WTTA” means “Want to talk about it?” and “ILI” means “I love it”. Often words appear as just one

letter, “u” means “you” and “r” means “are”.

The first people to use internet slang were internet game players; they used it to communicate with their

team mates and opponents. These words and abbreviations have become so popular that they are now

used to write messages on mobile phones and you can buy an internet slang dictionary if you want to

learn more of this interesting new „language‟. Some people are worried because they think that internet

slang is becoming part of the English language and that we might forget how to write properly. There is

even a famous case in the UK where a student wrote an exam essay completely in internet slang. It‟s is

everywhere!
