4. Los canales

Hay canales por todas partes del pueblo donde me crié. Los canales y el pueblo están ubicados en el Desierto Sonorense. Fueron excavados hace miles de años por los indios hohokam y se dice que eran el sistema de riego más grande del mundo antiguo.

Nadábamos a menudo en los canales durante los años de la secundaria y hasta practicábamos esquí acuático utilizando un coche en lugar de una lancha motora.

4. The Canals

There are canals everywhere in the town where I grew up. The canals and the town are situated in the Sonoran Desert. The canals were excavated thousands of years ago by the Hohokam Indians. It is said that they were the biggest irrigation system of the ancient world.

We often used to swim in the canals during our high school years and we even waterskied in them using a car instead of a motorboat.

One day many years ago, I heard that the city planned to develop the areas along the canals. I thought it was a good idea. Today it has become a reality.

There are sidewalks close to the banks of the canals and people go jogging or ride bikes there. There’s no trash. Everything is quite clean. There’s no grass anywhere because it’s all desert, but there are indeed flowering plants and desert trees.

All along the canals, posts have been placed that serve as signs. On these signs, you can read about the history of the canals. There are bas-relief images on the posts that represent geographical landforms such as mountains, hills, and rivers. Along the canals, there are also streetlights that allow nighttime walking.

Carp the size of nuclear submarines swim through the dark water of the canals. I’ve always been surprised that the youngsters in the town haven’t caught all of them. When I was around fourteen years old, I went fishing in a canal between Phoenix and Tempe and I was surprised to catch a bluegill. There were a lot of them in the muddy water

and they were all hungry. What surprised me was that there were fish there at all. The type of fish, on the other hand, was exactly what I would have expected since bluegills and their relatives were the most common kind. The green sunfish used to be perhaps the most common of all but I haven’t seen one in years. I remember that the green sunfish, despite its small size, was tough. If I put a green sunfish in a tank with any other fish, it would kill them all.

Today there are a lot of shells on the banks of the canals—more than I used to see years ago. They are the shells of clams and snails, and it seems that there are but two species. The clam is a Asiatic species whose genus is Corbicula. The snail is shaped like a long spiral and is similar in appearance to the ancient but extant marine genus Turritella. There are a lot of these mollusk shells, so the land along the canal banks looks like the beach of an ocean.

I learned the name of the snail a little while ago. For a few months, I hadn’t gone to “The Downunder,” an Australian wine bar near where I live and since I was passing by I

dropped in. As I drank a white wine, I saw on the door a poster with a photo of someone I knew, Dr. Ron Rutowski. He was a violinist and he was going to play in the bar from 5:30 to 8:30 that very day with two other musicians.

I went, and during a break I talked to him. It just so happened that this violinist was also a professor of biology whose specialty was butterfly behavior. I knew that he also taught the invertebrate course at the university and so I asked him the name of the snail. He told me that he knew the snail I was referring to well but couldn’t remember its Latin name. The next day, I emailed him a photo of the trio playing

One day, I walked a mile along the canal between Cooper Road and Gilbert Road. It was really hot and I took a break in front of a theater. I went inside to cool off. The employees showed me the stage that was situated in the central part of the room. All the seats were around the stage. It was a theater-in-the-round.

The people there explained that they needed about ten times more lights in this kind of theater because the audience was looking from all directions and thus they had to illuminate the actors from all directions. Last week I walked from Rural Road to the west. Near the sidewalk and the canal there’s a golf course. There the sidewalk is covered with mesh cloth so that the golf balls don’t hit the people walking there. Everything was new and clean. There was a pump and a metal pipe through which spouted a powerful jet of water. The canal was wide and the water deep and inviting. There were no golfers on the course and I didn’t see a soul except for two bicyclists who passed by and disappeared.

I know that there are towns through which real rivers run. In fact, a century ago the Salt River used to run through Tempe, the town where I grew up. Back then, the town was known as Hayden’s Ferry. I have traveled all through the United States and have seen towns like Spearfish, South Dakota where you can fish for trout in the brook at the city park, and I have visited Austin, Texas where the lazy and winding Colorado River passes through the

But here where I live the river has been dammed. We have canals and I will have to be content with them.
