Pastor`s Letter
1 SUNDAY OF ADVENT
The theme of the wake to the coming of the Lord dominates the whole liturgical season of Advent we begin this Sun-day. The Gospel today quotes the words that Jesus teaches his disciples: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come”. Jesus compares this watching to a wealthy man, who left his home and placed his servants in charge, each with his own work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch, because he could come back any time: “whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning”. In other words, the Lord could come in any hour they do not expect. The best way of preparation for this coming should be a good, Christian life each day that we could be “irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christs”. Advent is exactly the season which reminds us of this, according to its Latin origin verb “adventus”, which means “coming” (of the Lord). Tradition through the ages supported by the Holy Scriptures and teaching of the fathers of the Church, speaks about three gen-res (types) of Advent:
1. Historical, expressed in the Old Testament. It’s about the expectations for the coming of the Messiah who is to save the people from their sins; the theme is touched in today’s first reading which encourage the sinner to trust in the saving plan of God - “Redeemer”. 2. Liturgical, present in the liturgy that reveals the saving power of God on us. What was fulfilled in the history of Israel is Jesus Christ, Son of God - Redeemer, who was born and died on the cross for human sins, now it becomes real to us in liturgy and sacraments. This is why it is so important for our participation in the liturgy of the Church, because it makes us accessible to the salvation in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. The Advent season is exactly a time which has to awake us from the lethargy of our conformity to the watching of the Lord who is coming in the liturgy of Christmas and to not overlook Him in our lives.
3. Eschatological (word “eschaton” comes from Greek meaning “eternity”) expressed in the second coming of Jesus at the end of the world (called from Greek “Parousia”). Then, at the end of the world it will start a universal governance of God in Jesus Christ according to our participation in His grace and good works during our lifetime. In this Advent season, those three meanings come together every year reminding our progressing of age, our getting old, and inevitability of our final meeting with the Lord we are expecting on the base of our good Christian life which come at the moment of our death. This is also the meaning of the Aramaic word the Christians used to sing asking Jesus to come very soon: ma-ra-na-tha (“come Lord and do not delay”).

SECOND GRADERS
learned about Veteran’s Day
the week of November 11th.
They enjoyed learning about a Veteran
family and had the chance to write to
our veterans and troops.
We sent in our letters
to Operation Gratitude and hope to hear back!
4TH GRADE NEWS, NOVEMBER 2017
In Science, 4th graders recently completed an inquiry
project studying changes in ecosystems. Students
planted radish seeds in two cups: one with 10 seeds
and another with 80 seeds. Next they observed the
cups and collected data over three weeks and studied
which radish seeds grew more successfully.
During Red Ribbon Week, 4th graders spent some quality time
reading with our partner grade, the preschoolers.
Financial literacy is a necessary skill that everyone needs.
Students are looking forward to participating in a Money Savvy
program that will be presented at the beginning of December
and is sponsored by the Big Shoulders Fund.

WHY DO WE DO THAT?CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: With Christmas fast approaching, can you give me some practical tips to prepare myself and my family that will help us stay grounded in what this holiday is really about? With all the commercialism, it's easy to stray... Answer: Happy times and events bring fond memories and a renewed sense of love and kinship with others. The anticipation is half the joy of the event itself. The coming of the Lord is that kind of event that people have been looking forward to for generations with fervent hope and desire. It gave them strength and courage as they waited for the coming of the Lord. We know that Christmas is rushed. Sales begin in August and carols blare long before the season begins. Everyone laments the commercial aspects of the season, but as Advent begins, do something to help you be more mindful of the Lord's coming. Use an Advent wreath, or enthrone the Bible prominently, or read the readings from the Bible assigned to each day. Postpone the tree and decorations until closer to Christmas. Establish new family rituals, customs and prayers that help remind everyone that we are preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Fasting, daily Mass, a special celebration of reconciliation, reaching out to those alienated from family or society, and visiting the homebound manifest the love of the Christ Child and the Holy Family. Resist the temptation to rush the season. In his own time and in his own way, God will come. Our task is simply to be watchful and ready.

“HOT TOPICS”
St. Celestine, St. Cyprian and St. William Parishes join together for a fourth year to host a series of lectures to discuss “Hot Topics” in today’s challenging society. Please mark your calendars. We hope you can join us for what we feel will be very attention-grabbing discussion!
Thursday, December 7, 2017 @ 7:00 PM Topic: “God Squad” Presented by: Fr. Dominic Clemente Hosting Parish: St. William, 2600 North Sayre Avenue, Chicago, IL About the Topic: Millennials and Church Mass Attendance have been hot button topics in the Church the last five years. How do we get millennials to Mass? How do we keep the millennials we have? What in God’s name is a millennial?! These are all important questions and they will be covered by Fr. Dom who was featured in a TIME magazine article on millennial priests titled: The God Squad. In our time together Fr. Dom will explain who millennials are, who millennials are not, the “new” approach of millennial priests, and what parishes should be doing.
About The Speaker: Fr. Dominic Clemente is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and was ordained in May 2016. Fr. Dom grew up on Chicago’s Northwest side (go Cubs!) where he attended his parish grade school and St. Patrick High School (go Shamrocks!). Before entering the seminary, Fr. Dom was seeking a career in the performing arts until God called him to a bigger stage and a wider audience. When Fr. Dom isn’t at his parish (St. Edward) you can find him eating a Chicago Hot Dog (most likely at Jimmy’s or Gene & Judes), traveling the world, or sleeping on his easy chair. Follow Fr. Dom on Instagram @FatherDominicClemente, Twitter @FrDomClemente, and visit his website www.FrDominic.com.
A small reception will follow discussion!
