National Boycott Against Palermo’s Underway as Support for Latino and Immigrant Workers Grows
El Boycot Nacional Contra Palermo Continua Mientras Crece el Apoyo de Trabajadores e Inmigrantes
En Marcha Boicot Nacional Contra Palermo’s Mientras Crece Apoyo a Trabajadores e Inmigrantes Latinos Crece el apoyo nacional a trabajadores en huelga en Palermo’s, una gran fábrica de pizza congelada en Milwaukee, cuyos trabajadores entran en el tercer mes de huelga en su lucha por tener una voz en el empleo y por condiciones de trabajo seguras. Su lucha ya ha alcanzado una victoria histórica para los derechos de los inmigrantes en el sitio de trabajo a nivel nacional, cuando ICE suspendió una auditoría en reconocimiento de la existencia de un conflicto laboral. Mientras los trabajadores esperan una decisión por parte de la Junta Nacional de Relaciones Laborales, los trabajadores y sus simpatizantes han lanzado un boicot nacional en contra de los productos de Palermo’s. Ellos le están pidiendo a Costco, el mayor comprador de pizza congelada de Palermo’s, que retire de sus estanterías las pizzas congeladas Palermo/Kirkland, con base en el Código de Conducta del Proveedor de Costco, el cual “se compromete a proteger los derechos de los trabajadores y las condiciones de seguridad de la gente que produce la mercancía que aquí vende.”
Ya se han realizado múltiples manifestaciones a las afueras de Costco, pidiendo a la empresa que haga cumplir su Código de Conducta, organizadas por grupos diversos, incluidos la Asociación de Estudiantes de los Estados Unidos (USSA) y la Federación Obrera Sur Central (SCFL). Crecen las acciones solidarias nacionales, a medida que simpatizantes en 11 ciudades ya se han unido a la acción nacional de boicot en las tiendas Costco para el 11 de agosto: Los Angeles, CA, Nueva York, NY, Portland, OR, Washington DC, Montgomery, AL, Phoenix, AZ, Phoenix, AZ, Grafton, WI , Middleton, WI, Pewaukee, WI, Pittsburgh, PA y Merrillville IN.

National support grows for striking workers at Palermo’s, a large frozen pizza factory in Milwaukee where workers are entering their third month on strike in their struggle for a voice on the job and safer working conditions. Their struggle has already achieved a historic victory for the rights of immigrants in the workplace nationally, when ICE suspended an audit in recognition of the existing labor conflict.
While workers await a decision on the part of the National Labor Relations Board, the workers and supporters have launched a national boycott of Palermo’s products. They are asking Costco, Palermo’s largest purchaser of frozen pizzas, to pull Palermo/Kirkland frozen pizza from its shelves based on Costco’s Vendor Code of Conduct which “is committed to protecting the working rights and safety of the people who produce the merchandise it sells.”
Already there have been multiple rallies outside of Costco asking the company to enforce its’ Code of Conduct, organized by diverse groups including United States Student
Association (USSA) and the South Central Labor Federation (SCFL).
National solidarity actions grow, as supporters in 11 cities have already joined the national boycott actions at Costco stores for August 11th: Los Angeles, CA, New York, NY, Portland, OR, Washington DC, Montgomery, AL, Phoenix, AZ, Grafton, WI , Middleton, WI, Pewaukee, WI, Pittsburgh, PA, and Merryvile IN.

"I have worked at Palermo’s for three years and while I like my job, a major problem at Palermo’s is the lack of sufficient training and the increased machine speeds. They often have us operate heavy and dangerous machinery with little training. In my view, some machines lack sufficient safety protections.
The company would speed up production lines faster and faster, which led to more jams in the machine that
we had to clear. One day, my sleeve got caught in the machine, sliced open my pinky and I almost lost two other fingers. I was in so much pain, but the company wanted me to go back to work almost immediately.
When accidents happen, they almost always blame the worker. With proper training, the workers can control the machines, but without training the machines control us."

"He trabajado en Palermo’s durante tres años y aunque me gusta el trabajo, hay un problema serio en Palermo’s y es que falta entrenamiento suficiente y aumentan la velocidad de las máquinas. Por lo general nos hacen operar máquinas pesadas y peligrosas con muy poco entrenamiento. Según lo veo, algunas máquinas carecen de suficiente protección de seguridad.
La empresa aumentó más y más la velocidad de las máquinas, lo cual resultó en mayores atasques en la
máquina que teníamos que despejar. Un día, mi manga se atascó en la máquina, me desgarró el dedo meñique y casi pierdo otros dos dedos. Tuve mucho dolor, pero la empresa quería que yo regresara al trabajo casi en forma inmediata.
Cuando ocurren accidentes, ellos casi siempre culpan al trabajador. Con un entrenamiento apropiado, los trabajadores pueden controlar las máquinas, pero sin ese entrenamiento, las máquinas nos controlan a nosotros."

"He estado un empleada leal en la fábrica de Palermo’s por seis años en el departamento de embalaje. Hoy yo y mis compañeros de trabajo estamos luchando por mejores salarios, mejor tratamiento, y más respeto en el trabajo. Muchas veces supervisores nos tratan mal y a veces incluso nos burlan.
Por ejemplo una vez mi supervisor nos grabó con su teléfono y se burló de nosotros cuando batayamos para seguir trabajando por la rapidez de las máquinas. Esta falta de respeto no es aceptable en el lugar de trabajo, y por de eso estoy organizando para formar un sindicato."
Luchando por Respeto: Judith’s Story"I have been a loyal Palermo’s
pizza factory employee for six years in the packing department. Today, my coworkers and I are fighting for better wages, better treatment and more respect on the job. Supervisors often treat workers poorly and have on occasion taunted us.
One time in particular, my supervisor recorded us at work on her phone and made fun of us while we struggled to keep up with the fast pace of the machines. That kind of disrespect is unacceptable in the workplace and that’s why I’m organizing to join a union now."

Mujeres Líderes es un Programa dedicado al Desarrollo de Liderazgo en Latinas patrocinado por el Fondo de Mujeres de Greater Milwaukee. Este entrenamiento de liderazgo de 4 meses está destinado a proporcionar a las participantes conocimientos sobre temas tales como organización, hablar en público, campañas, recaudación de fondos y formas en que estas habilidades se pueden implementar para servir mejor y organizar la comunidad. Voces de la Frontera gustaría reconocer el liderazgo de las participantes.

Mujeres Lideres is a new Leadership Development Program sponsored by the Women's Fund of Greater Milwaukee. This 4 month leadership trainning is meant to provide the participants with knowledge about topics such as Organizing, public speaking, campaigning, fundraising and ways that these skills can be implemented to better serve and organize the community. Voces de la Frontera would like to acknowledge the participants' leadership.
