The typical city divided space intoresidential, mixed use, commercial, and civic spaces. The
residential areas were groupedby profession.
At the core of the city was a hightemple .
This high temple usuallypredated the founding of the cityand was the nucleus aroundwhich the urban form grew.
The districts adjacent to gates
had a special religious andeconomic function.
The city always included a belt ofirrigated agricultural land
including small hamlets.

TRANSPORTATION The transportation network was organized in three tiers:
Wide processional streets- They served as the northern
entrance way into the city, and during the new Year Festival as
a cultic route. Theywere approx. 10-14m wide and were madeof compacted mixture of stones and soil
Public through streets- Used by the people of the city to travelin the city. They were approx. 5m wide and were made ofcompacted mixture of stones and soil.
Private blind alleys- It was a passage that is closed at one end.
The current estimate is 10% of the city area was streets and
90% buildings.
The canals; however, were more important than roads for
transportation .
