Pastor’s Chronicle

Today we continue reading from chapter 6 of St. John’s gospel “The Bread of Life Discourse,” last week we heard the familiar story of Jesus feeding 5,000 people with 5 barley loaves and two dried fishes. In that mira-cle Jesus was more interested in nourishing a hungry heart than filling an empty stomach. The crowd still gathered on the mountain wanted more miracles to feed their empty stomach but Jesus refuses to repeat the miracle. The crowd focused on the perishable food in their hands, Jesus tells them that they failed to under-stand the meaning of bread given to them. Jesus’ intention is that they focus on him as the Bread of Life he tells them “I myself am the bread of life. No one who comes to me shall ever be hungry.” If they could bring themselves to consume him, his message, his way of looking at things, his way of living, they would no long-er be hungry, empty in the spiritual sense. Perhaps today we should get in touch with our hunger, material and spiritual. Why is it we have the uncontrollable urge to consume, why do we have such large appetites for things, money, for security, for suc-cess? And why is it that once we have these things we still feels empty, still hungry? Could it be that deep down we know that life is much more that chasing after the things our society place so much value upon and at the end of our lives won’t mean a hill of beans? Perhaps the real hunger that continues to gnaw inside us can only be filled by Christ the “Living Bead.” Today we are invited to feed, not on the old and familiar, but on Jesus, the Bread of Life, to be con-sumers of him in the Bread and Wine of the Eucharist and allow him to be the source of our spiritual nourish-ment and eternal life.

Fr. Bill

Padre Bill
