IntroductionWhy shine a light on Spain?Why is Spain important, or more important than other countries?In many ways Spain represents realities on the ground in most European countries, except that Spain is quite different historically from the rest of Europe because of its isolation from World War II and the lessons of the War, and its unique history regarding the Jews in its midst. But, moreover, in our time,
Spain has shown aspirations to be very influential in the peace process but not as a neutral entity, rather, as a champion of the interests of the Islamic World. Spain sees itself as the Western European leader-designate of the Muslim countries and strives to have outstanding relations with the Islamic World. Spain’s idea of a peace process is “justice for the Palestinians”.
To that effect, Spain has donated important sums of money to the Palestinians and to pro Palestinian NGO’s
Muslims consider Spain a gate to Europe and constitute now 5% of the total population
The Spanish Media is the most influential in the Spanish speaking world. The news and opinions coming out of Spain are reprinted in innumerable papers in Latin America.
Spain’s arms production has grown significantly in the last two years and it exports heavily to Iran and Venezuela.

Introducción:
¿Por qué mirar a España?
¿Por qué España es importante, o más importante que otros países?España representa la realidad de la mayoría de los países europeos, pero España es bastante diferente históricamente del resto de Europa debido a su aislamiento de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y de las lecciones de la Guerra, además de su historia única en cuanto a los judíos. En la actualidad:
Los musulmanes consideran España una puerta a Europa y constituyen ahora el 5 % de España ha mostrado aspiraciones de ser muy influyente en el proceso de paz, pero no como una entidad neutra, más bien como un campeón de los intereses del Mundo Islámico. España se ve como el habitante de la Europa Occidental designa líder de los países Musulmanes y se esfuerza de tener relaciones excepcionales con el Mundo Islámico. La idea de España de un proceso de paz es "la justicia para los Palestinos".
A aquel efecto, España ha donado a las sumas importantes del dinero a los Palestinos la población total.
Los Medios de comunicación españoles son los más influyentes en el español que habla el mundo. Las noticias y opiniones salir de España son reimprimidas en papeles innumerables en América Latina.
La producción de armas de España ha crecido considerablemente en los dos años pasados y esto exporta pesadamente a Irán y Venezuela.

Education
A look at the incidents that have taken place reveals, in the Education sphere:
1-Elementary school children are organized by their teachers to send postcards to the Israeli Embassy with hate messages.
2- High school students refuse to sit next to Jewish students (46% respond Yes).
3- College students routinely boycott conferences that include Israelis including a conference not with Israelis but about the Holocaust.
Graffitti and defacing of synagogues and city walls with anti-Semitic paintings, as well as attacks on synagogues, and insults and attacks on the Israeli Ambassador routinely to the point that they make it to the newspapers.

La falta de conocimiento sobre el Holocausto en el sistema educativo español, así como la constante presión del gobierno socialista de España contra Israel han llevado a la formación de una opinión que rechaza todo lo relacionado con el judaísmo y los judíos. Una mirada en los incidentes antisemitas que han ocurrido en la esfera educativa:
1. Niños de una escuela primaria son organizados por sus profesores para enviar postales a la Embajada israelí con mensajes de odio.
2. Estudiantes de Instituto rechazan sentarse al lado de estudiantes judíos -el 46 % según una encuesta-.
3. Estudiantes universitarios rutinariamente boicotean las conferencias que incluyen a israelíes, incluyendo una conferencia sobre el Holocausto.

How to look at all of this?
The facts on the ground can be summarized as follows:
1- A recent poll by Casa Sefarad (?) (which is part of the foreign
ministry) showed the following returns: 11% of Spanish people
are of the opinion that Israel should be dismantled. 34% hold
negative opinions about Jews (downright anti Semitic opinions).
And it is widely believed that these numbers, coming out of the
foreign ministry poll, are on the low side.
2- A President and the Government vastly and openly anti-Israel.

3- A remarkably high number of NGO’s with a mission that is wholly
or partly about anti-Israel activism that use open acts of
aggression and a very vicious rhetoric.
4- A public opinion vastly prejudiced against Jews and anti Israel
which is influenced by the NGO’s, public officials and the Media
5- A Media that features Israel practically daily on the front page of
the principal papers evoking long held prejudice against Jews in
their writings about Israel.
As a result of these facts on the ground, when outrageous acts take place, by NGO’s, public officials or the Media, public opinion remains complacent and compliant.
Spain appears to be a case where the entire structure of a country is in place, from the government on dawn, to demonize Israel and create an anti Semitic atmosphere in daily life. Perhaps other Western European countries compare to Spain in this amalgam of forces that encompass institutionalized, Media driven and private activity against Jews and Israel, however Spain presents a more extreme case where all this happens in the open and widely, unopposed. As Pilar Rahola said two days ago here in Boston, in Spain you can defend everything, even the banning of bullfights, but you cannot be on the side of Israel. That is completely unacceptable.
A review of the facts about all of these entities and organizations, governmental and non governmental and what has taken place in Spain in the last couple of years reveals alarming conclusions.

Hechos de la España contemporánea
¿Cómo mirar todo esto?
Los hechos sobre el terreno pueden ser resumidos así:
1- Una encuesta reciente encargada por Casa Sefarad Israel –institución financiada y dependiente del Ministerio de Exteriores) reveló los siguientes resultados: El 11 % de los españoles opina que Israel debería dejar de existir. El 34 % de los españoles tiene opiniones negativas sobre los judíos –opiniones antisemitas-.
2- Un Presidente y el Gobierno infinitamente y abiertamente anti Israel.3- Un notablemente alto número de ONG con una misión que es totalmente o en parte sobre anti Israelí, que llega a utilizar actos violentos y que siempre se vale de una retórica y un discurso parciales.
4- Una opinión pública infinitamente parcial contra los judíos e Israel, muchas veces por la influencia ONG, funcionarios públicos –incluso al más alto nivel- y medios de comunicación.
5- Medios de comunicación que destacan a Israel prácticamente a diario y que evocan el prejuicio sostenido contra los judíos e Israel.

The Government:The President of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has used the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians for his own political purposes from the very beginning of his term in office, starting during his campaign for the presidency when he vehemently condemned the opposition party for not attacking Israel. During the war in Lebanon he didn’t condemn Hezbollah, only Israel. “We need to demand that the Government of Israel honors the rights stipulated by the International Community” and called the military intervention “illegal” and “without justification”. He “strongly” condemns the “absolutely disproportionate reaction” of Israel on the Gaza Strip. “Your people (to the Palestinians) will always count on the political help of Spain”. The current dialogue he says “I hope will provide for “historical justice for Palestine”. The following information is from NGO Monitor, the Israeli watchdog for NGO’s in its latest report:
President Zapatero, during the last two years of his tenure, secured 1.5 million Euros in subsidies, from the Spanish taxpayers’ pockets for extremist ideologies, anti Jewish and filo-islamists. He used the AECID (Agency for International Cooperation and Development) to deliver the funds to groups like:
The Israel Committee against House Demolitions, whose founder defends the elimination of Israel, 105,000 E, The Applied Research Institute Jerusalem, participates in international boycott campaigns against Jews, received 98,000 E, Breaking the Silence that accuses Israel of being an Apartheid country received 131000 E
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel that accuses Jews of Racists, 100000 euros Rabis for Human Rights that supports Palestinian radicalism, 70000 Euros. And the list goes on.

Gobierno
Manifestaciones de carácter antisemita son muchas veces avaladas por el actual partido político en el Gobierno, el Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE).
Los principales sindicatos, CCOO y UGT, así como otras instituciones han apoyado la crítica indiscriminada contra Israel. Entre los principales líderes políticos que se han manifestado abiertamente a favor de la causa palestina y en contra de Israel se encuentran: el presidente, José Luís Rodríguez Zapatero, el ministro de Exteriores, Miguel Ángel Moratinos y otros altos cargos del actual gobierno de izquierda.

NGO’sThis is a central and major piece of the puzzle. NGO’s have become crucial to activists, to link between political agendas and terrorist activism in clean and civilized ways that intellectuals like to support and feel justice is being done. Take the Flotilla example. Turkey did not do anything belligerent. It was an NGO or two. Turkey comes out clean and Israel gets to deal with civilians, and famous writers and Nobel prize winners.
In Spain’s political climate, dozens of NGO’s with agendas that are clearly anti Semitic have been able to operate unhindered.
A Forum of NGO’s reveals, in the topics of presentations, the agendas of these organizations.
AS a result of NGO’s activity, gatherings around Cultural or Economic issues (such as those of Artists, Academics, Enterpreneurs or Investors), to which Israelis are invited are routinely sabotaged by violent demonstrators with the result that the events are cancelled just as they open.
Take for example the meeting of Scientists and Enterpreneurs from Spain and Israel called : “First Encounter Spain-Israel on Renewable and Clean Energies” that convened at the Science Park of the Universidad Autonoma in Madrid , A violent demonstration of 200 people disrupted the opening meeting, got the conference cancelled, attacked the Israeli delegation that was being escorted by the police, vandalized the police car as the police watched, and wounded with a bloody wound caused by a rock in the head, Eytan Levy and Israeli entrepreneur.

ONG
El papel de las ONG anti israelíes es cada vez más importante en España, pues estas organizaciones cuentan con apoyos económicos muy importantes por parte del Gobierno de España. Además, cuentan con gran credibilidad, lo que les garantiza un lugar privilegiado en la cobertura mediática y un impacto asegurado en la opinión pública del país.
Las siguientes son ONG que tienen en común, al menos, los siguientes dos puntos: 1. Señalar a Israel como el principal culpable de la situación de los palestinos. 2. Afirmar que en Gaza hay una crisis humanitaria y que es por culpa de Israel.
Amnistía Internacional (España): Elaboró un informe tras la Operación Plomo Fundido contra Hamás en el que criticó duramente a Israel. Por ejemplo: culpa a Israel de tener políticas discriminatoria en relación con el suministro de agua. Intermón Oxfam (España): Elaboró un informe: España en Territorio Palestino Ocupado: aumenta la pobreza mientras crece la ayuda, en el que culpa a Israel, y no a Hamás, de bloquear la entrada de ayuda humanitaria a Gaza y habla de crisis humanitaria.

Spain’s history with the Jews:
(Extracted from Masha Gabriel’s article- ‘Media, Jews and Israel Turing Operation Cast Lead’. ‘Medios de Comunicación, judíos e Israel durante la operación Plomo Sólido’ , en Israel en los medios de Comunicación Españoles (2006-2009). Cuadernos de Sefarad, Madrid, 2010.)
In 1492- The Jews were fully expelled and Spain became the first modern state with a unified religion with the physical exclusion of all minorities. The Jews didn’t return to Spain because the Inquisition lasted till 1834. So Spain de facto epitomized the concept of “blood cleansing” or what we call today “ethnic cleansing”. So in Spain, the “Jewish” was an “imaginary ghost” in which all evil was deposited. And the very word “Jew” became an insult, present to this day in popular speech.
Repudiation of all that was Jewish was a proof of one’s Catholicism. Centuries of “racial purity” created “trauma and confusion in Spain”, and an isolated and monochromatic Spain.
Fear and prejudice took root in the culture. So although Jews were allowed into the country, prejudice remained ingrained.
Francisco Franco, in power since 1939, was sympathetic to Hitler and benefited from him but stayed out of the War in the rest of Europe. Franco was obsessed with the idea of a “judeo-masonic plot”.
Spain remained an outsider to the reconstruction of Europe and to the lessons of the Shoah and to this day the Jews remain a “destabilizing element” in the eyes of the Spaniards.

La historia de los judíos en España“Mención aparte merece el caso de España y su especificidad histórica. Aunque 1492 no es ni mucho menos la primera expulsión de la que es víctima el pueblo judío, a diferencia del resto de Europa, esta fecha marcará en la Península Ibérica el principio de una unidad basada en la exclusión de las minorías. Así como el resto de países europeos verá pronto retornar a sus judíos, gracias al Tribunal del Santo Oficio de la Inquisición el primer Estado Moderno colocará su piedra fundacional persiguiendo la unificación religiosa a través de la “limpieza de Sangre”. Por cierto, muchos historiadores verán en ello la semilla de lo que con el tiempo conoceremos como “limpieza étnica”.”.
“(…)En España el “judío” no será más que un fantasma imaginario, compendio de todas las vilezas imaginables. Y el mismo vocablo: “judío” se convertirá en un insulto, de hecho vigente aún hoy en día en el habla popular”.
“(…) aunque 1834 es el final oficial de la Inquisición no lo es del trauma y la confusión que siglos de “pureza racial” han creado a una España aislada y monocolor. El miedo y el prejuicio no se pueden abolir con un decreto. Habrá que esperar poco menos de un siglo para que la vida judía en el país empiece a normalizarse”.
“El general Francisco Franco, en el poder desde 1939, pese a no ocultar sus simpatías por Adolf Hitler y haberse beneficiado de su ayuda para resultar vencedor en la contienda civil española (…) No en vano Franco parece tener una verdadera obsesión con lo que llamará “complot judeo-masónico”.
España permaneció fuera de la reconstrucción de Europa y de las lecciones de la Shoah y hasta este día los judíos son "un elemento de desestabilización" a ojos de los españoles.

Anti-israelism or Anti Semitism?
Important government personalities such as former foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, and Media personalities such as the famous anchorman Iñaki Gabilondo, have vehemently contended that the remarks of the Government about Israel do not constitute anti Semitism. “This should be the last time you say something like that” admonished Moratinos with a pointing finger and visibly angered to a Jewish leader who said that.
To be sure, let’s examine the conventional European Forum against Anti Semitism definition of Anti Semitism, which is a long one, so we are extracting parts of it
Making demonizing or stereotypical allegations about Jews— such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.
Using the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g.,
claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis.
* Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g. by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.
* Applying double standards by requiring of it a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation.
* Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.
When they chant “Assassins” “Israelis have blood in their hands”, they are talking about an ingrained stereotype, the blood libel, even if they don’t know the story, or the history, The label of Jew and blood is practically part and parcel of the Jew in Spain: Jew and blood, Jew and money, Jew and killer, Jew and owning the world.

¿Antiisraelismo o antisemitismo?
Personalidades importantes de Gobierno, como el antiguo Ministro de Asuntos Exteriores Miguel Ángel Moratinos, así como celebridades de los medios de comunicación, como el presentador famoso Iñaki Gabilondo, han afirmado, vehementemente, que los comentarios del Gobierno sobre Israel no constituyen antisemitismo. "Esta debería ser la última vez que usted dice algo como eso.", Moratinos amonestó a un líder de la comunidad judía, señalándole con un dedo y visiblemente enfadado.
Para ello, examinamos la definición de “Antisemitismo” del Foro Europeo contra el antisemitismo. A continuación mostramos algunos puntos clave de esa definición:
Demonizar o hacer alegaciones a los estereotipos sobre los Judíos – como, sobre todo, pero no exclusivamente, el mito sobre una conspiración mundial judía o de judíos que controlan los medios de comunicación, economía, gobierno u otras instituciones sociales.
Utilización de los símbolos e imágenes asociadas con el antisemitismo clásico (p.ej., las reclamaciones de judíos que matan a Jesús o libelo de sangre) para caracterizar a Israel o a los israelíes.

Cuando los manifestantes corean "Asesinos" o "Israel tiene las manos manchadas de sangre", hablan de un estereotipo inculcado: el Libelo de sangre, incluso si no conocen ese hecho, o la Historia, la etiqueta de “judío y sangre” es prácticamente una parte integral del estereotipo del judío en España, como también lo son las de: judío y dinero, judío y asesino, judío y posesión del mundo.

How does the Media in Spain fit into the puzzle of Government, NGO’s, and Public Opinion, as it relates to Israel?
It’s particularly telling in the cartoons.
A survey of cartoons published by various newspapers in the last two years reveals an anti Semitism that is freely and widely expressed.
For example: The utilization of religious anti-Semitic symbols: The medieval myth of deicide. A character with all the characteristics of the negative Jewish archetype: hooked nose, Hasidic clothing, etc) crucifies symbolically the new Messiah, Barak Obama, giving his back to “peace, love, harmony and good will” representing the Palestinian state.

We analyzed the newspapers for headlines and found the most commonly appearing verb following the word Israel was “kill”“Israel kills” is the most common beginning of a sentence in headlines.
Examples are:
-Israel kills at least 9 people while it attacks ships carrying humanitarian help. (From El Mundo, the most read Spanish paper on line, with 11 million readers daily).
From the same paper:
-Israel kills 10 participants after attacking the flotilla to Gaza in international waters.
-The Israeli army kills 5 palestinian militias in a border clash. (From El Pais, the highest printed edition circulation paper in Spain).
-Israel kills Nizar Rayan in a bombardment of Gaza. He was one of the main Hamas leaders. (ADN, free printed newspaper of wide readership).
-Israel kills 4 militias in Gaza- (20 minutes, free printed newspaper).
In fact, it was this kind of newspaper writing that preceded the University incident, with the Israel assassins chanting. The Media creates the atmosphere in which this NGO’s recruit people and the rest of the population approves of their actions and remains silent, while the police does not interfere either, even when a foreign Israeli is being attacked with rocks. Following the UAM incident, the reports of the media were: “the demonstrators were responding to the recent attack of Israel on the freedom flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to GAZA”. So the newspapers justify the violent actions of these groups.

SO MUCH is certain: that a people who may have suffered crimes of genocide or inhumanity does not authorize them to commit such crimes themselves. Zionism is equivalent to a blind and vengeful fundamentalism. That those who use Israel (not all) to hide from what had once been done to them. As compensation, another people were robbed of their geography – only part of it – to create or to recreate a nation preferred by God. The outcome was bad: the budding of avarice and desire for expansion, the contempt for other peoples and their lives and possessions, the terrorism it resuscitated….Now it refuses coexistence. Without peace, without limits, without any ceasing in its avarice and made-up stories, the Jewish people succumb again. As has happened on a number of other occasions: pogroms, ghettos (voluntary or not), persecutions, expulsions…From Egypt to Sefarad, from Canaan to Zion: all promised lands. Shouldn’t such a people ask why the same thing keeps happening to it? Or is everyone wrong?
Masha Gabriel: There is nothing new in blaming the victim for what they have suffered, but it is surprising to see this kind of sentiment being promenaded in so prominent and putatively serious a newspaper.
Let’s remember that the use of Jewish religious content as a weapon to be brandished against or in derision of its adherents is a clear signal of anti-Semitism according to the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights.
In his view, the creation of Israel (illegitimate, since land was robbed from Palestinians) is responsible for all the problems thereafter: avarice (an anti-Semitic classic), the desire to expand (the politically correct version of the “desire to dominate” mentioned in the Protocols), contempt for other people (the “Jews” as a racist people) or the resurgence of terrorism (once more the Jews are to blame for the biggest threats today)….

Aligning himself with the words of leaders such as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Hugo Chavez, in their vision of the coming age of justice, Gala predicts that the Jews will once again succumb due to their multiple diseases. Diseases which for him justify the pogroms, expulsions, or the Shoah.
The following interview, with Holocaust denier David Irving, was published on the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust by El Mundo, the second most printed journal in Spain. Because of its scope the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain, and other leaders of opinion, sent letters to Pedro J. Ramirez, Editor in Chief and founder of this paper.

De hecho, esta era esta clase de enfoque que utilizaron los periódicos al informar sobre el incidente antisemita en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, donde los manifestantes coreaban “Israel asesinos”.
Así, los medios de comunicación crean la atmósfera en la cual la gente que reclutan las ONG antiisraelíes, así como el resto de la población, aprueban los incidentes de antiisraelíes, mientras la Policía no interfiere, como se aprecia incluso cuando un israelí extranjero está siendo atacado con rocas. Después del incidente UAM, los informes de los medios de comunicación eran: " los manifestantes respondían al ataque reciente de Israel sobre la flotilla de libertad que lleva la ayuda humanitaria a la FRANJA DE GAZA ". Entonces los periódicos justifican las acciones violentas de estos grupos.
Dada la extensa relación de artículos anti israelíes y antisemitas, hemos elegido un caso particularmente representativo de este tipo de prensa en España. Este caso destaca por su protagonista: David Irving, uno de los negacionistas más conocidos en el mundo

occidental, por la crudeza de su contenido y por la fecha de publicación, que coincidía con el 70 aniversario de la conmemoración del Holocausto.
La publicación de este artículo ha suscitado cartas de protesta, por parte de la Federación de Comunidades Judías de España y también por parte de otros líderes de opinión.

Conclusion:
Although historically Spain is a unique case in Europe given its historical isolation from the Shoa and the lessons the rest of Europe might have learned from it (like: it’s not acceptable to be anti Semitic because anti Semitism means I approve of Auschwitz), Spain is a case study for when the Shoa is no longer part of the intellectual/political Memory of Europe (which is beginning to be the case, after 60 years and the gradual disappearance of survivors). Moreover, Spain, with its high density of Muslim immigrants and its aspirations among the Muslim countries, can be looked at as a presage of things to come in other Western countries, not just European ones.
Conclusión:
Aunque históricamente España sea un caso único en Europa dado su aislamiento histórico de la Shoa y de las lecciones que el resto de Europa aprendió, entre ellas:-Que no es aceptable ser antisemita, porque el antisemitismo significa aprobar Auschwitz-. España es un caso en el que la enseñanza de la Shoa no forma parte de la memoria histórica, intelectual y política –esto comienza a ser el caso en Europa, después de 60 años y de la desaparición gradual de sobrevivientes-. Además, pueden mirar España, con su alta densidad de inmigrantes musulmanes y sus relaciones con los países musulmanes, como un presagio de lo que puede ocurrir en otros países de Occidentales, no solamente europeos.
