• SlideshSlideShare is a Web 2.0 based slide hosting service. Users canupload files privately or publicly in the following file formats: PowerPoint, PDF, Keynote or OpenOffice presentations. Slide decks can then be viewedon the site itself, on hand held devices or embedded on other sites.[2] Launched on October 4, 2006, the website is considered to be similar to

 YouTube, but for slideshows.[3] The website was originally meant to be

used for businesses to share slides among employees more easily, but ithas since expanded to also become a host of a large number of slideswhich are uploaded merely to entertain.[4] Although the website isprimarily a slide hosting service, it also supports documents, PDFs, videosand webinars.[5] SlideShare also provides users the ability to rate,comment on, and share the uploaded content. The current list of SlideShare's investors includes Venrock, David Siminoff and Dev Khare.[6]

Slideshow• A slide show (more commonly written as one word slideshow) is an on-

screen presentation of information / ideas presented on slides. A slide showenforces the ideas, comments, solution or suggestions presented in theslide. Slide shows are conducted by a presenter using an apparatus, suchas a carousel slide projector, an overhead projector or in more recentyears, a computer running presentation software. The term "slide"

originates from the use of slides which have been around for many years.Slides originally were projected on a screen, for example in a theater bymagic lanterns, a practice that later evolved into moving picture shows.Even after the advent of motion pictures, slides continued to be employedfor a time between showings of the films, especially to advertise localbusinesses or maintain theater decorum—for example by requesting thatgentlemen remove their hats and refrain from smoking, and urging

mothers to remove crying infants from the auditorium.

•  The idea for Scribd was originally inspired when Trip Adler was at Harvard and had a conversation with his father, John R. Adler, about the difficultiesof publishing academic papers. He teamed up with cofounders JaredFriedman and Tikhon Bernstam and they attended Y Combinator inCambridge in the summer of 2006.[citation needed ] Scribd was launchedfrom a San Francisco apartment in March 2007 and quickly grew in traffic.

In 2008, it ranked as one of the top 20 social media sites according toComscore.[4] In June 2009, Scribd launched Scribd Store,[5] and shortlythereafter closed a deal with Simon & Schuster to sell ebooks on Scribd.[6] Over 150 publishers including Random House, Wiley, Workman,Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Pearson, Harvard University Press andStanford University Press are now associated with Scribd. ProQuest beganpublishing dissertations and theses on Scribd in December 2009.
