He graduated in mathematics from Oxford University in 1958 and, after a postgraduate year studying biometry, he was appointed to the scientific staff of the M.R.C. Pneumoconiosis unit, South Glamorgan. He is interested in the epidemiology of lung diseases associated with occupational exposure to dust. Department of Health and Social Security Mr Clifford Gregory, formerly deputy chief physicist to the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board, has become chief scientific officer (Zuckerman). Mr Gregory, who joined the Ministry of Health in 1966, will have direct responsibility for relationships with regional scientific officers in the National Health Service. Dr Gerard Vaughan, Minister of State for Health, has an- nounced the appointment of Mr Tim Rathbone, M.P. for Lewes since 1974, as his Parliamentary Private Secretary. Mr Reg Prentice, Minister of State for Social Security, has ap- pointed Mr Cyril David Townsend, M.P. for Bexleyheath since 1974, as his Parliamentary Private Secretary. Health and Safety Executive Dr R. J. C. Harris, director of the former Microbiological Research Establishment at Porton Down, is to advise the Executive on microbiological hazards at work. New Charity for Coronary Artery Disease HEART (Heart Exploration and Research in Therapy Ltd) is a new charity which will support research into coronary- artery disease. Initially preference will be given to grant appli- cations covering the field of non-invasive diagnosis but appli- cations for funding for work in related areas of coronary- artery disease will also be considered, including applications for grants for the purchase of capital equipment. (Teaching) Prof. Roger Dyson, of Keele University, has accepted an in- vitation from the Authority to examine the state of labour rela- tions in the Westminster group of hospitals. Dr A. M. Gordon, senior lecturer and honorary consultant at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London, will succeed Dr J. E. O’N. Gillespie as medical director of The Retreat, York. The annual meeting and dinner of the Cambridge Graduates Medi- cal Club will be held in St John’s College, Cambridge, on Friday, July 13. Members wishing to attend should contact Dr 1. F. M.
