5. Read the text and answer the questions. In the winter of 1925 there was a very serious diphtheria epidemic in Nome, Alaska. Diphtheria can be cured with a special serum, but there wasn't any in Nome. The nearest serum was 600 miles away and in 1925 there weren't any cars, airplanes, or helicopters that could transport it and it was too far for anyone to walk, especially in the winter. A man named Leonhard Seppala got a group of twenty sled dogs together to take the serum to Nome. Sled dogs are a normal way to travel in Alaska in the winter. The sleds are traditionally pulled by ten to 20 dogs. The leader of Seppala's team was Balto, a great Alaskan Malamute. These dogs weren't popular with sled drivers because they thought they were slow, but Seppala's team, led by Balto, ran half the way to Nome, 300 miles. There, another team took over and took the serum to Nome, saving many lives.(1) Why was the diphtheria epidemic so serious? ____________________(2) Why was it difficult to get the serum? ____________________
