From the Desk of Fr.

I have beenhearing frommany peoplethat they are notgiving onSunday in thecollection tosend a messageto the U. S.

bishops that they have to get better about abuse. Ishare your desire for the bishops to get better at this. Not giving in the collection, however, sends no suchmessage. It only hurts our parish. The past twoweeks’ collections have been particularly low andI was wondering if a “protest” is the reason. Please letme know if I am on track with this. This protest, onceagain, only hurts Church of the Holy Spirit. We havetalked as a staff about how to send a message to thebishops and are working on a response to them. Thanks for your interest.

This past Monday and Tuesday, I attended a meetingabout Renew My Church, an archdiocesan planningprocess. It was actually quite good as Archdiocesanmeetings go and it really called us to look seriously atthe parish and how we reach out to new members. I will explain more later.

If you are over 18 and have not received Baptism,Communion, or Confirmation, Please contact Sr.Marianne about our RCIA program.

Fire Prevention WeekThe Great Chicago Fire took place on October 9, 1871.More than 300 people died, 100,000 were left homeless,

and more than 2,000 acres of the city were destroyed. The Peshtigo fire in northeast Wisconsin took place at

the same time destroying sixteen towns and killing morethan 1,100 people. The great devastation caused by thesefires left such an imprint on the psyche of fire-fightingprofessionals that forty years later the Fire Marshals

Association of North America instituted Fire PreventionWeek, from Sunday through Sunday in whatever weekOctober 9 falls. Despite the advent of modern buildingmaterials that reduce the likelihood of fire, home firesstill cause numerous deaths and injuries. Each year a

different theme on fire prevention is chosen andpromoted by the National Fire Protection Association. You can learn more about this week, find resources foreducating children, and learn ways to keep your family

safe from the dangers of fire by visiting theNFPA website at www.nfpa.org.

Third in a series of what our Faith Community can do to minister to those with mental illness and their families

The dignity of the individual is paramount in our belief that we are all created in the image and likeness of God.Our language and our actions should reflect that belief. When talking about mental illness, we should use “people firstlanguage.” We refer to people as the person they are - not the disease they have. So we say “a person who has a mentalillness” or “a man or woman with a mental illness.” We avoid referring to people using terms like “the mentally ill” or“the depressed,” or even worse terms. We all want to be known for the person we are not the illness we have. We aremore than the illness we have! As people of compassion and justice we should never use stigmatizing language ordemeaning terms when referring to people with an illness.

Careful use of language is a way of communicating that people with mental illness, as Pope John Paul II said, “have theinalienable right not only to be considered as an image of God and therefore as a person, but also to be treated as such.”We make the dignity of the individual real by following the example Jesus gave us. Jesus calls us to seek out andinclude people in our faith community who are suffering and isolated. Jesus gave us many examples like the story of theGood Samaritan who helped someone when no one else would, and the story of the father of the prodigal son thatteaches us about unconditional love. It is when we love in these ways that we experience the love that God has for us.

Mondays for Mental Health Starting Oct. 8Learn more about mental health. What can we do to help family and friends who suffer with a mental illness? St. Mary of the Annunciation (SMOTA) and St. Mary of Vernon (SMOV) are partnering in a 5 part series of weeklyinformational meetings. All the meetings are from 7:00 – 8:30 PM.

The dates at St. Mary of Annunciation 22333 W. Erhart Road, Mundelein, Il 60060 are 10/8, 10/15 and 11/5. The meetingroom is off the narthex in the new church. The new church is next to the large parking lot at the end of the driveway.

The dates at St. Mary of Vernon Parish Center 236 U.S. Highway 45, Indian Creek, Il 60061 are 10/22 and 10/29.Drive straight onto the parish grounds to the building at the far end of the driveway.

Communion Song: Table SongWe are the body of Christ. Broken and poured out,Promise of life from death, we are the body of Christ.

Is not the bread of life we break a sharing in the life of God?Is not the cup of peace out-poured the blood of Christ?

How shall we make a return to God, for goodness unsurpassing? This saving cup we shall hold high, and call out God’s name!

Unless a grain of wheat shall fall upon the earth, it shall remainA single grain; but if it dies, it will come to life!

Come taste and see the goodness, the wonders of the risen one!Come bless our God, in all things, let praise be our song!Text & Tune: David Haas, b. 1957; © 1991, GIA Publications, Inc.

Break into song at the deeds of the Lord, the wonders he has done in ev'ry age.

The Lord has made salvation known, faithful to the promises of old.Let the ends of the earth, let the sea and all it holds make music before our King!Text: Psalm 98: Bob Dufford, SJ, b. 1943 Tune: Bob Dufford, SJ, b. 1943;acc. by Bob Dufford and Chris Morash, alt. © 1981, Robert J. How to Pray the Rosary

Using beads to count prayers is anancient tradition, and not unique tothe Catholic faith. The rosary as weknow it today has evolved overtime from its original loop of fiftybeads marked out three times (toaccount for 150 prayersrepresenting all the psalms) to itspresent configuration of fivedecades with some additionalprayers. The rosary is begun byreciting the Apostles' Creed whileholding the cross that hangs fromthe loop. The Lord's Prayer isprayed on the first bead on the wayup from the cross to the loop joiner. Then three Hail Mary's are prayedon the next three beads (ofteninterpreted as prayers for anincrease of faith, hope, and charity),followed by a Glory Be. AnotherLord's Prayer opens the firstdecade, which continues with tenHail Marys, and concludes with aGlory Be, prayed while holding thechain between the final Hail Maryof the decade and the next bead forthe Lord's Prayer. The prayer andmeditation of the five decades isdirected to one of the mysteries ofwhich there are four sets (Joyful,Sorrowful, Glorious, andLuminous). There are booklets thatoffer scriptural meditations for eachof the beads as well, providing anopportunity to enrich this traditionalprayer with excerpts from the wordof God.

He said to them in reply,"What did Moses commandyou?" They replied, “Mosespermitted a husband to writea bill of divorce and dismissher." But Jesus told them,"Because of the hardness ofyour hearts he wrote you thiscommandment. But from thebeginning of creation, Godmade them male andfemale." - Mk 10:3-6Excerpts from the Lectionary forMass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD.

People can spend their entire lives looking fortheir most suitable partner.

Some have an unattainable ideal in their mindsthat makes the search impossible. Others maychoose a different partner over and over againwithout any real discernment, leading to a longseries of breakups and heartache. Perhaps thegreatest obstacle for people lies in theirassumption that the most important criteria forchoosing a partner is that the person they chooseto love needs to be devoted to them and befaithful to them above all others. The truth is that if you want to have a suitablepartner who you find yourself drawing ever closerto as the years go by, then the focus of bothpeople involved needs to be on a much moreimportant being than the two of you.

When I was a teenager, I remember seeing atriangle used as a visual aid in explaining howtrue love works. God is the top point and the twolovers, friends, or family members involved arethe bottom points. If the two involved in therelationship love God more than each other, than in time it will be their love for the Divinethat will bring them ever closer, like how a triangle narrows at the top point.

The more I give of myself to my God, the greaterI find my love is for my wife, my children, andmy friends. A stewardship way of life willeventually strengthen all our relationships, for a surrender to the One who is love means anincrease in the love we have to give to others.

For those who continue to search for the “one,”pause, pay attention, and see the One who hasalways loved you and will do so forevermore.

Confessions/ConfesionesSaturday/Sabados4:00 - 4:30 p.m.

I believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all things visible and invisible.I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit, was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance of the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seatedat the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the deadand his Kingdom will have no end.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son he is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sinsAnd I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
