After he finished breakfast, Ed put everything in the sink, poured a little dishwashing soap onto a Teflon pad, and scrubbed the soup bowl, the sandwich plate, and the milk glass. Then he switched on the garbage disposal to grind up the few bits of food that he had scraped off his plate. He left the kitchen to go brush his teeth. But he felt something wet on his bare foot. Sure enough, he looked down and saw some water on the kitchen carpet. “What is this?” he said aloud.

Opening the cabinet door under the sink, he saw no dripping water. He went to the closet and got a flashlight. When he shined the light into the cabinet under the sink, he saw drops of water on the sides of the dark blue steel cylinder. It looked like he had a leaky garbage disposal. To test his theory, he turned on the switch, and a stream of water flowed out of a seam onto the cabinet floor and then onto the kitchen carpet. Ed had a problem, but he didn’t have time to fix it now. He had to run some errands. He put some tape over the switch so he couldn’t accidentally turn the disposal on again.

Many people are increasingly thirsty for what is considered healthiest, and often most expensive, wa-ter on the grocery shelf. However, instead of consuming four billion gallons of bottled water a year, we need to start thinking about what all those bottles are doing to the planet.

Water bottles, made from natural gas and petroleum, are bad for the environment because their pro-duction wasters valuable resources. The Earth Policy Institute in the US has calculated that it takes about 1.5 million barrels of oil to make the water bottles Americans use each year. And unfortunately, only about 23 percent of those bottles are used again.

In fact bottled water isn´t necessary because most municipal water is so good that nobody needs to import a single bottle. Drinking eight glasses of bottled water a day, could cost to $1,400 annually. The same amount of tap water would cost about 49 cents.

Another serious problem is that the most bottled water people drink, the less political support there will be for maintaining public water supplies. Access to cheap, clean water is basic to a country’s health.

Some local government the US. have begun to fight back. Recently, San Francisco’s Mayor prohibited his city’s department and agencies from buying bottled water. Likewise, a similar order has been given in Salt Lake City. The real change though, will come when millions of people realize that they can save money and the planet, if the only stop drinking bottled water and turn on the tap.

People should be aware that the country has some of the best public water supplies the world.

Dennis FralleyComputer Engineer

After I graduated as a computer engineer fifteen years ago, I became a computer teacher at a school, I loved teaching, and I still enjoy doing a few hours a week, but I found that most of the really interesting work was in industry. I accepted a permanent job in the computer industry six years later. There I saw that real problems are not in laboratories but in the places where products are made. So I moved into building, computers and computer programs. Three years later, I was an expert, I continue to teach but in a different way taking real life into the classroom.

I work about ten hours a day. I enjoy what I do so I don’t have a problem with doing some work at home. I start by checking my e-mail before breakfast, do some work on the computer and then go to the office. My days are very busy — I read a lot and talk to many people. I consider that listening to others is very important, in fact, many of my ideas have come to my mind when I’m doing that.

The Monarch Butterfly

This amazing butterfly is easily seen by its orange and black colors. Unfortunately, one of the last areas of the monarch butterfly may soon be gone. The place is in Pacific Grove. That town calls itself Butterfly U.S.A.

In this town, there is a woman who has a wild garden where the butterflies like to live. She wants to sell it to a building company that is interested in building homes, but the city doesn’t want her to do this, because the butterflies will not have a home. Instead, people from the town would like to make it a place just for butterflies, but they cannot do because they don’t pay for it.

Millions of butterflies have followed the same paths for thousands of years. They start their trip in Mexico and return to California to leave their eggs in the trees. They go to Pacific Grove to find the right temperature and stay warm.

The monarch butterfly is the symbol of Pacific Grove. Many people come to the city each year to see them. The money these visitors bring is very important for the town. Some people say that more butterflies used to come; not as many come now, so they think all of new buildings will make the monarch butterflies disappear from this area.

TELEVISION

9Life is short! Who has time to waste? Not I if you are really honest with yourself you’ll notice that may be spending too much time on television and there are better things you could be doing. Whether you watch television or not is your decision. But consider this first.

Some people say TV is educational, but it is an ineffective medium for learning. Though there is a great variety of programs and sometimes they are interesting, many TV shows offer information that is not accurate. If you really want to learn something, you should read it for yourself.

TV can help you keep informed and it is necessary to know what is happening with people and places around you. However, if you watch the average news program, you have to waste a long time on useless information. If you really want to be up-to-date read the newspaper; it is more detailed and you can choose which stories you read.

The average adult spends about 2 hours a day watching TV. Let’s say you lived age 60; you would have spent 5 years of your life in front of the television. Not only could you be catching up with your family during that time, since watching TV with them it is not real interaction, but you are also preventing yourself from having new experiences. Do you know what you could do with those extra years? Here’s some advice: create some art, talk to people, exercise, learn a foreign language or how to play an instrument.

Why we loveTo Travel10

Anyone can travel, and it’s my opinion that everyone should travel. You can use travel to relax, to see the world, to connect with others who share your interest for traveling or just to have adventure, but especially to create a collection of many experiences to remember, as you grow older

You might be traveling to visit family or friends, for work, because you’re moving or sightseeing or just to relax

on a beach somewhere to get away from everything. The purpose depends on what you want to do and your personal view of life.

Traveling for business or a family event are common reasons. But the most difficult question is why some people are happy to spend their whole lives within 50 miles away of where they were born while others just can’t stop traveling around the world. These travelers - called long-term travelers - are easily recognized. There is something in their eyes when they’re discussing their latest trip; it’s a careless attitude when something goes wrong or an ability to live in extreme conditions simply to discover a new village in a distant area of Peru.

Traveling is amazingly rewarding. It helps you answer basic human questions as: how are we different? How are we the same? Then you want to know about the art and the history and see what experiences helped people become what they are. For some, this is sightseeing; for others, it’s simply part of “being”. For those who love traveling, the question is not simply “when is my next trip?” but also “why can’t I stop?

1. What is the writer trying to do in the text?

A. explain why traveling is wonderful

B. mention his experience of a nice trip

C. describe good places to travel to

D. invite people to visit faraway areas

2. What is the purpose of traveling according to the text?

Jonathan’s Trip to Colombia

12I went to Colombia last summer. My journey began on the Caribbean cost and ended on the border with Ecuador. Colombia is a splendid country, extremely diverse and full of wonderful people. I will tell you why.

In South Colombia there is a city called Pereira; just outside you can find a track where you will see the farm Villa Maria – a hidden paradise that takes a long time to get to-. It is a working coffee farm located in the middle of a valley. Coffee and plantain grow as far as the eye can see. The farm is made up of the house and the processing plant. The family business has guests at the house for just $45.000 a night. This includes 3 home cooked meals a day, a

swimming pool, and as much coffee as you can drink. The scene is quite unbelievable. Bamboo chairs rest on the corners of the Villa, mangos hang from the trees, parrots and birds fly wild.

A wonderful man named Hector who runs the farm is happy to show guests around the coffee processing plant. By day, the only sounds are of the horses coming down the valley side carrying food. By night, the wildlife comes alive, and depending the time of the year - - thunderstorms offer a spectacular light show.
