MisalignmentTypes:• Angular

2. Offset or Parallel

3. Combination

4. Axial

What causes Misalignment:• Installation (human) Errors

• Thermal Growth

•  Worn Bearings

• Dynamic Twist of Bases Under Load

• Settling Bases / Foundations

Introduct ion

3 Basic Categories (flexible shaft couplings)

• Mechanical ( Lubricated)

• Transmits torque through a lube film. Accommodatesmisalignment with rocking motion through gearing.

• Metallic (Non-lubricated)• Transmits torque through compression or tension of

metal. Accommodates misalignment through

deflection of metal.• Elastomer (Non-lubricated)

• Transmits torque through compression and/or shearof Elastomer. Accommodates misalignment throughdeflection of Elastomer.

Lubr icated

• Advantages of Gear Couplings– Accommodates Large Misalignment including

most axial misalignment

– Very Economical

– High Torque Capacity (Torque to OD Ratio)

– High Torsional Stiffness

• Disadvantages of Gear Couplings– Regular Maintenance / Lubrication Required

Terminology

• Flex Hubs – Attached to Shaft

• Sleeves – Slide over hub teeth (shrouded or exposedbolts)

• Accessories – bolts/nuts, gaskets and seal

• Rigid – Like a flex hub (seats on shaft) but doesn'taccommodate misalignment since it has no teeth

Full Flex Rig id

9

Basics

• Hubs have external (male) gear teeth

• Sleeves have internal (female) gear teeth

• Rigid has no teeth

*Sleeve teeth contact hub teeth one for one – unlike gearbox;power is transmitted from tooth to tooth thru lube

Basics

• Full Flex or Double Engagement - twoflexible halves bolted together - usedexclusively on 4 Bearing Systems

• Flex Rigid or Semi-Flex or SingleEngagement - one flexible half bolted to arigid half - used on 3 bearing Systems andfloating shafts.

Tapered Grid

– Can Replace Flex Element (Tapered Grid) Without Moving Hubs– Absorbs Medium Shock Loads

– Provides Some Torsional Damping– High Fatigue Life– Moderate Torque Capacity– Very Economical

T10 - T20 - T31 - T35•Advantages:

•Disadvantages:

– Maintenance / Lubrication Required Periodically– Torsionally Soft– Balanced Couplings are NOT Available– Typically Shorter Life than Gear Couplings– Not Suitable for Critical Applications

Disc - Theory of Operat ion

• Transmit Torque Through Flexible,Stainless Steel Disc Packs Instead of

Gear Teeth.• Compensate for Misalignment by

Deflection of Disc Packs Instead ofGear Teeth.

• No Wearing Parts - Flexing Insteadof Sliding

Terminology

• Disc - Stainless Steel Flexible Disc

> (.012” To .015” Thick)

• Disc Pack - Unitized Pack Made Up of Several

Discs• Link - The Disc Section Between Bolt Holes

• Scallop - Optimized Disc Profile, Thickest(Strongest) Near Bolt Holes

• Sizing Designations:– First 2 Digits is Size (For Example: size 204 =

2.0)

– Last Digit is Number of Bolts (204 = 4 Bolt Style)
