2020 ICOM ICEE VIRTUAL CONFERENCE PROGRAMME 1

2020 ICOM ICEE Virtual Conference

Shifting Landscapes: Future Proofing Museums in Times of Change Registration is free of charge

For the health and safety of our members, colleagues, and local partners, the Board of the International Committee for Exhibition Exchange has decided to cancel all in-person activities planned for the 2020 Annual Conference in Mexico City, Mexico. For the first time, the ICEE Conference will be held live online from Tuesday, November 17 to Friday, November 20, in collaboration with the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC-UNAM), the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), and the National Museum of Anthropology, all located in Mexico City.

The virtual conference features four days of keynote speeches, panel sessions, networking opportunities, and virtual visits to some of the finest cultural and science institutions in Mexico and around the world. Participants will be able to interact in real time with speakers or catch up later with on-demand access.

The 2020 ICEE Virtual Conference will include two special sessions to discuss the operational impacts of the Coronavirus outbreak on the logistics and management of touring exhibitions, and the state of professional development and capacity building for museum and exhibitions professionals in a post-pandemic world. In addition, the conference programme include sessions conducted in Spanish on Friday, November 20. These special panels and presentations, organized in collaboration with the Latin American and The Caribbean Regional Alliance, ICOM LAC, will offer ICOM members and Spanish speakers the opportunity to fully participate in discussions and exchange of ideas around the conference theme and sub-themes.

Conference Theme

The conference theme addresses and analyses how cultural landscapes – locally, regionally, nationally and globally – are shifting and adapting to an unprecedented period of change. Global pandemics, shifting demographics, changes in societal values, globalisation, and technological advances are redefining how visitors interact with cultural institutions. How is the museum and exhibition sector responding to these shifting values, skills and attitudes that vary considerably across audiences? How are cultural institutions and exhibition development organizations looking at equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion? What networks, relationships or new collaboration models are strengthening exhibition offerings in a post-COVID world?

We invite colleagues from all over the world to join us in exploring Shifting Landscapes: Future Proofing Museums in Times of Change through subthemes of: Connect, Engage and The Future.

Description: The ways we connect with each other and the world around us have changed dramatically over the last few decades, with the global pandemic only accelerating the shift in how we communicate: from black and white television and telephone calls riddled with static, to live broadcasts of the Olympic Games and video chats with a group of people across continents. The ways to connect are endless, both privately and in business. Modern day ultra-connectivity opens up new pathways for museums and museum professionals but can also pose new challenges. What is the role of museums, science centres and cultural institutions in this hyper connected world? How can exhibitions create new connections between business partners, visitors, and cultures? Between time periods? How can museums, galleries and science centres connect to new markets and new audiences through new technology?

Special Session: Touring Exhibitions During a Worldwide Pandemic

Chair: Alanna Davidson, ICOM ICEE Board Member; Touring Exhibitions Manager, National Museums Scotland (United Kingdom)

Description: The exchange of exhibitions came grinding to a halt at the beginning of 2020, as more and more countries went into lock down and museums all over the world closed their doors. After six months of being at a standstill, international exhibitions are on the move again. How are international exhibitions being installed and removed during these strange times? What have been the experiences of museum professionals, independent touring exhibition companies, and art transportation companies? This session will dive into the challenges, risks, and perhaps even unexpected benefits of touring international exhibitions during a pandemic.

Alejandra Barajas, Head of Exhibitions, National Institute of Anthropology and History, INAH (Mexico) Amanda Mayne, ICOM ICEE Board Member; Head of International Touring Exhibitions, British Museum (United Kingdom) Tim Pethick, CEO, Nomad Exhibitions (United Kingdom) Camila Perez, Director, Gold Museum and World Arms Museum (Peru), and Patricia Arana, Director, Art Division, Door to Door Transports (Peru)

Description: Why are more people feeling isolated in this hyper connected world? With every desire essentially a click away, why do we find ourselves feeling lonely? With xenophobia, polarisation and conservatism in politics rising in many parts of the world, people are longing for real engagement and a sense of belonging now more than ever. Museums, science centres, exhibition developers and cultural institutions have a unique opportunity to engage visitors, give them the sense of involvement, and let them know that we are all part of the same fabric of humanity. The challenge now facing the museum and exhibition field is how to create these moments of engagement and inclusion. How can exhibitions and related content create a sense of belonging in a hyper connected world?

Thursday, Nov 19 Sessions

Description: Many museums, science centers, and exhibition producers around the world are struggling to envision what the future will bring for their institutions in a post-COVID-19 world. Within the museum, short- and medium-term plans are filled with drastic budget cuts, staff reductions, increased costs, challenging logistics, and the necessity of COVID-19 protocols such as limiting visitors. Outside the museum, the social environment is dominated by radical changes driven by the global pandemic and resulting public health concerns over mass gatherings, as well as other significant changes in social justice, demographics, and political, economic, technological, and environmental scenarios. Simultaneously, the post-pandemic world and its drivers of change represent opportunities to rethink the work of museums, science centers, and exhibition producers around the world. This new landscape requires clear vision and innovation with very little room for error. Without question, we need to rethink the ways we tell stories and create exhibition content- but how do we build a solid understanding of the future for museums, science centers and exhibition developers in order to create more powerful, diverse and inclusive exhibitions? How can we analyze and measure the impact of external drivers of change in our institutions such as social justice, demographics, and political, economic, technological, and environmental forces? For this session theme, presenters will discuss their work through the eyes of the future of exhibitions; highlighting efforts, challenges faced, and innovative solutions implemented by institutions around the world.
