    DEFININGANTICIPATION

    ANTICIPATING INDEFENCE

    Anticipation is a process of mental analysis o f t h e

    situationin a g ame,whichprecedesanaction.

Children, juniors and adults,in anygivensituation, use theireyesight, hearing andtouch, to follow themovementoftheballduringplay.

From these observations, and depending on theirlevel of experience, they make individual tacticaldecisions, that also fit with the team's collectiveactions.

Through regular practice, and by memorisingsituations, the level o f expertise is graduallyimproved. Theprocess, fromlearning to decisionmaking, will thus be better m astered, adapted andspeededup.

Anticipation, inthiscontext, is de fi ne da s th ew il ltoactfirst. Itistryingtoreachadecisionwithouthavingfirstconsideredeachand every factor. Iti stak ing adecision based a s much on prediction as a ctualobservation.

Anticipation is in fact speculating about thefuture, usingcluestoallowyoutoconcludewhatisthe mostlikelyoutcome.

Therefore, a beginner will not bea ble toan tici pate ,exceptbychance.

    Theultimateaimistolimittheuncertaintyasmuchaspossible. Itisnotpossible topredictt he actionfreely,withoutpointsofreference.

The ability to anticipate, bothfrom the knowledgeandexperie ncepoi ntof view, will thereforedevelopatthesamepaceastheunderstandingofthegame.

Anticipation,inthiscase,becomesout-thinkingyouropponents: Tryingto surprisethembyofferingtheman option , before they have had time to fully

considertheirnextaction.Tobeabletoanticipatewithout takingunnecessaryrisks, you must becapable of using theavailableinformation to choose which options are trulyimportant, comparedtothosethatwouldbedeemed

    secondaryinamathematicalsense.

Anticipation owes noth in gt o luck, it must be theconclusion of a mental process that relies on

observation, memory and the selection of

information t o reach a calculated decision that is

    seenaslikely,butsurprisingbyitstiming.

Defenceis, firstandforemost, theprotectionofyourgoal. Its key aim is therefore to cause as manyproblems aspossible toyouropponents, whentheyhavetheball.

    Theclassicorderoftacticalintentionsisasfollows:

    1. Place as many team mates as possiblebetween the ball, and the goal you aredefending.

    2. Harass theplaye ron theball tolimit hiso rheractions,a n d control his or her nearest

    teammates.

    3. Cause uncertainty in the mind of theattackingteam, inordertorecovertheballinThebestcircumstances.

It must be understood that defence is initially areactiontothemovementoftheattack.

periodicalAs longas theattackingteamhastheinitiat ive, therecan be no anticipation. Thereforethedefencemust,in the first instance, through team behaviours andindividual initiatives, put the attack under pressure. From then on, it becomes possible to foresee the

actions that the attacking team is likely to take.Anticipationbecomespossible.

    I propose here a c l assic o ptionusinginterceptiontorecovertheball :

    Thedefenceis inplaceandfollowingthegeneralprincipalsoutlinedabove.

The player on the ball is put under pressure, neutralised.

The pass to thenearest teammatesis blockedthrough the tactical positioning o f the otherdefenders.

The interceptionbecomes possible becausetheactions taken by the defenders makethe likelytrajectory of the ball inevitable and thereforepredictable.

    Thereforeanticipationindefenceconsistsof:

    1. Usinggoodteamworktol imittheattack's

    choices

    2. Actively, not reactively, working to recover

the ball or take the initiative from youropponent - outpacing their return indefence.

The aim of the counter attack is to outpace thedefensivefall back o f the teamthat has justlosttheball, and become a threat to them as quickly aspossible.

The counter attack h as a number ofprerequisites.Youmust:

    1. Haverecoveredtheball.

    2. Bemovingtowardsyouropponent'sgoal.

    3. Getorganisedfasterthantheteamreturningindefence.

    Inshort,youmustbecometheattackers,beforeyour

    opponentshavebecomethedefenders.

This technique is oftenused by the defenderonthe

oppositesidetowheretheshot is being takenfrom. If the ball is well controlled or blocked b y the

    goalkeeper,theplayerwho anticipates will have anadvantageovertheteamfallingbackindefence.

This tactical solution has always been extensivelyused. Inthe1960'sMares(CSSR)wasoneofitsbest

    exponents.

    Inwomen'shandball, the wing-defenders,are often

already gone at the mom en tan opponent takes ashot a t goal. This choice ofaction, must always be

accompanied by good cover from the seconddefender, in case theb alli srec over edqu ickl ybyth eopponents andreturned to that sector. In fact this

    tacticcansometimesbackfire.

When wing shots are taken, we sometimes seeanticipatory runs towards theopponent's goal fromthe forwardcentraldefenderontheside of the co ur t

the shot is being taken from, because thew in ge rtaking the shotw i l l have difficulty getting back to

    coverindefence

These well used interventions are not exactly

    describedasevolvedtacticalreflexes,asmuchastheapplicationofstandardpractices.

Itse em s more interesting to consider the use of

anticipation to initiate counter attacks in a moreflexibleway.

Thea i m could be to identify situations that make

recovery of t h e ball likely, and to instil, from theoutset, a positive mindset that expects a counter

    attack.

When the refereesindicate, by bringing their hands

to their wrists, that t hey are about to penalise the

    attacking team forpassiveplay,thisshouldbeacluetoprepareforacounterattack.

Inthis situation, theattackingteamhasverylittletimeto tr yan d shoot at go al ,an d therefore the defence

    must:

Doallitcan to pressure the players likely totaketheshot.

    Positionitselftoblockanylikelypasses

Start thinking about the possibility of acounter attack. This last tactical intentionshould notb e d o n e at the expense of th e

    previoustwo.

You must therefore position a defender as adeterrent, ontheopposi teside ofthec ourt towheretheballis, whoserolewillbe to:

defender inanintermed iate position. This must be

carefully co-ordinated withtherest of the team, tomake sure that the attackers cannot exploit the

    situation .

Inthis case, it isimportanttobe imaginative, while

still protecting your o wn goal. We know that therewillbealotofmovementintheattackandthattheir

actions will be more spontaneous. The task isthereforetoproposeoptionsthatwill:

    Causeproblems to theattack

Push one or two defenders towards theopponent's goa

The suggested solution involves 2 forward

Another option can be used when the ball is

travelling intheoppositedirectionto thepositionoftheline player. When itreachesthecentreplayer, t h e

Anticipation i s the mark of a player that hasmanaged to simplify his or her approach to t he
