Lou DeAdder “Number 5”. Stara It Up 2010. Este es el quinto trabajo del cantante, compositor y guitarrista canadiense Lou DeAdder, donde nos obsequia con ocho creativas composiciones en las que mezcla con gusto y buen criterio aquellos géneros por los que siempre se ha sentido atraído, como son blues, rock, rhythm and blues, rockabilly y una brizna de latin jazz. Lou se ha rodeado de un buen puñado de músicos que siguen con fidelidad e interpretan satisfactoriamente todas las coordenadas que marca su música. Los nombres de los que han intervenido en la construcción de este “Number 5” son, Brett Piekarz bajo, Leo Sullivan saxo tenor, Gary Craig batería, Steve Mcdade trompeta y ‘flugelhorn’, Martin Alex Aucoin piano y órgano, Dave Perry coros y Carlos Del Junco armónica. El resultado es un álbum fresco y solidamente argumentado, pues Lou DeAdder tiene calidad y recursos suficientes para plasmar todas sus ideas de forma ordenada y, este quinto disco de su carrera, así lo testifica. MUY BUENO. Fifth cd of singer, songwriter and guitarist Lou DeAdder, where he brings us eight creative compositions that blend with taste and good sense those genres he has always been attracted by, such as blues, rock, rhythm and blues, rockabilly and a bit of latin jazz. Lou is surrounded by a bunch of able musicians who faithfully follow and skilfully perform the lines that mainly follow his music. The names of those who have performed in "Number 5" cd are, Brett Piekarz bass, Leo Sullivan tenor sax, Gary Craig drums, Steve Mcdade trumpet and 'flugelhorn', Martin Alex Aucoin piano and organ, Dave Perry, backing vocals and Carlos Del Junco harmonica. The result is a cool refreshing but at the same time firmly built album, as Lou DeAdder has quality and resources enough to cleverly display all his musical ideas and, this fifth album perfectlu proves it. GREAT.

Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King “Have Blues Will Travel”. Alligator 2010. Una excitante y original combinación de dos guitarras compitiendo y, a la vez, complementándose entre sí, en una tórrida colección houserockin’ blues en doce nuevas canciones, escritas todas ellas por estos dos monstruos de la guitarra que son Smokin’ Joe Kubek y Bnois King, con aportaciones incluso del propio Bruce Iglauer, quien firma dos cortes en compañía de ambos músicos. Estos dos colegas, Kubek y King, junto a los músicos que les acompañan, John Morris bajo y Adrian Marchi batería, brillan de forma sostenida y suficiente a lo largo de todo el disco, atacando con espontaneidad y pasión un estilo de blues que conocen de forma clara, apabullante y desmedida, si se me permite usar tal adjetivo, desarrollando y articulando un discurso ameno, lleno de intensidad y eficiencia. La guitarra de Smokin’ Joe Kubek, ya sea slide, solista o rítmica, se escucha siempre por el canal izquierdo de los bafles, mientras que la guitarra y la voz de Bnois King suena por el derecho. MUY BUENO. Exciting and original combination of two guitars competing but, at the same time, complementing each other in a hot houserockin' blues collection of twelve new songs, written by these two guitar monsters who are Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King. There is also the very special contribution of Bruce Iglauer himself, who signs two cuts together with these two musicians. Both Kubek and King and the rest of musicians who back them -John Morris on bass and Adrian Marchi on drums-, shine along the whole cd with an spontaneous passionate style, to present the kind of blues

they deeply and totally control, developing a well articulated musical speech full of a pleasant efficient intensity. Smokin' Joe Kubek’s guitar, either slide, soloist or rhythm, is always heard by the left channel of the baffles, while Bnois King’s guitar and voice sounds in the right one. GREAT.

Andrea Dawson “Left With The Uptown Blues”. Listeners Ears Records 2010. Andrea Dawson es un encanto de mujer, atractiva y muy femenina, dotada además de un talento innato para cantar blues o cualquier otro estilo que se le ponga por delante. Básicamente este es un álbum donde Dawson se recrea con consistencia y buen tino en un repertorio esencialmente de corte bluesy, alguna balada, algo de ‘slow-dance-soul’, mas un tema titulado “Dead Love” que es una marcha fúnebre de New Orleans. A pesar de que este es su primer trabajo discográfico, Andrea sabe sobradamente lo que es pisar un escenario, lo que la convierte en una cantante experimentada y las tablas que posee, se hacen evidentes desde que suenan los primeros compases de “Watch Me Burn”, tema con el que se inicia este “Left With The Uptown Blues”. En la banda de Andrea Dawson participan con asiduidad Lucky Peterson y Texas Slim y en este disco encontramos también a Andrea ‘Jr. Boy’ Jones, como invitado a la guitarra, así como en la producción y arreglos de dos temas. MUY BUENO. Andrew Dawson is a charming, attractive and very feminine woman, also gifted with an innate talent to sing blues or any other style she is asked to do. Basically, in this album Dawson tastefully performs with good sense on an essentially bluesy repertoire, also including some ballads, a little bit of 'slow-dance-soul', plus a song entitled "Dead Love" that is a New Orleans funeral march. Although this is her first album, Andrea knows well to be on stage, which makes her become an experienced singer, which becomes evident since the first notes of "Watch Me Burn", song that opens "Left With The Uptown Blues” cd. In Andrea Dawson’s band regularly participate Lucky Peterson and Texas Slim and, in this cd, you will also find Andrea 'Jr. Boy 'Jones, as a guest musician on guitar, as well as doing final production and arrangements in two songs. VERY GOOD.

Guitar Gabriel “The Beginning Of The Music Maker”. Music Maker/Pinacle/Dixiefrog 2009. Este álbum que ahora comentamos, y que también contiene un maravilloso dvd, es uno de esos raros tesoros que aparecen de vez en cuando y que todo aficionado al blues debería tener en su colección. Guitar Gabriel, cuyo verdadero nombre es Robert Lewis Jones, nació en 1926 en Decatur, en el estado de Georgia. Su padre Sonny Jones, ya era una leyenda del blues en aquellos años, pues había grabado algunas canciones junto a Blind Boy Fuller, Sonny Terry y Bull City Red, que estaba al washboard, durante el mes de julio de 1939 en Memphis, TN. Este disco deja constancia y refleja con fidelidad la impronta de la gran carga emocional y artística de un verdadero y genuino intérprete de ‘down home’ blues. La historia de éste bluesmen es larga y está llena de vivencias emocionantes, algunas de una dureza considerable y otras llenas de humor y ternura. Gabe, como era conocido entre sus más próximos, falleció el 2 de abril de 1996, pero su espíritu sigue vivo y ha sido fuente de inspiración para la compañía discográfica Music Maker. Si no conocéis a este artista inmortal, os invito a conseguir una copia de este doble cd + dvd, para descubrirlo por vosotros mismos. Os puedo asegurar que me daréis las gracias de todo corazón.

IMPRESCINDIBLE. The album now reviewed, which also includes a wonderful DVD, is one of those rare treasures that appear from time to time, every blues fan should have in his record collection. Guitar Gabriel, whose real name was Robert Lewis Jones, was born in 1926 in Decatur, Georgia. His father, Sonny Jones, was already a blues legend in those years, as he had recorded some songs with Blind Boy Fuller, Sonny Terry and Bull City Red, who plays washboard, in July 1939 in Memphis, TN. This album accurately and perfectly reflects the mark of the emotional artistic speech of a true genuine down home blues musician. The history of this bluesman is long and full of exciting experiences, some very hard difficult ones and other ones full of humour and tenderness. Gabe, as he was known among his closest friends, died on April 2, 1996, but his spirit is still alive and has been a source of inspiration for Music Maker record label. If you are not familiar with this immortal artist, I suggest you to get a copy of this double cd + dvd, and discover him. I dare say you will thank me for the advice. ESSENTIAL.

J.J. Milteau “Harmonicas”. Dixiefrog 2010. Después de descubrir la magia de la armónica escuchando discos de blues de los que más tarde serían sus ídolos, Jean Jacques Milteau se ha convertido con el paso de los años en una verdadera autoridad en la materia, no ya como estudioso y erudito en la historia de este género musical, sino también como uno de los más avanzados armonicistas modernos de la nueva escuela del blues. Su personal sonido y su particular fraseo le han catapultado a lo mas alto dentro del panorama bluesero actual, siendo hoy en día uno de los músicos de blues más demandados dentro de los circuitos de los festivales de blues, especialmente los europeos. En este nuevo doble álbum, nuestro protagonista refleja todo su conocimiento y poderío, extrayendo sin apenas esfuerzo todo el jugo que este pequeño y al mismo tiempo gran instrumento puede dar de si. Dos extensos discos con cuarenta canciones y cerca de dos horas y media de buena música, donde la armónica se erige como protagonista absoluta. MUY BUENO. After discovering the magic of harmonica listening to blues recordings of musicians who later would become his idols, Jean Jacques Milteau has gradually become a real authority in this subject, not only as researcher and master in blues history, but also as one of the most advanced modern new school harmonica players. His personal sound and phrasing have driven him to one of the highest places of blues scene, and today he is one of the most popular blues musicians in European blues festival circuit. In this new double album, Milteau shown all his powerful harmonica knowledge, pulling out easily everything this small but great instrument goes far. Coco Montoya “I Want It All Back”. Ruf 2010. Guitarrista de alto voltaje, formado en su juventud en las filas del gran cantante y guitarrista Albert Collins, quien solía decirle algo así como: “Hijo, toca solamente como te salga del corazón y no te preocupes de nada más”, Coco Montoya es actualmente uno de los guitarristas más reputados en la escena del blues moderno. Su repertorio y estilo abarcan un sinfín de registros e influencias, que van mas allá de los bien amados doce compases. Su eclecticismo no tiene parangón y su gusto y finura han quedado sobradamente plasmados en los diferentes

álbums que ha grabado durante los últimos diez años. Este trabajo para la compañía alemana Ruf Records, recoge once nuevas canciones de factura propia, donde Montoya impone su particular sello en todos y cada uno de los temas incluídos. Montoya aporta su excelente voz y guitarra, y está respaldado por Jeff Paris teclados, Reggie McBride bajo, Stephen Ferrone bateria, Courtney Branco percusión, el fantástico saxo de Paulie Cerra en algún tema, el piano de la maravillosa Honey Alexander y la armónica de su marido Rod Piazza en un corte, y su buen amigo Keb’ Mo’ como guitarra rítmica. MUY BUENO. High-voltage guitar player who, in his younger days, developed his knowledge as sideman in great singer and guitarist Albert Collins band. Karen Lovely “Still The Rain”. Pretty Pear 2010. Sorprendente y bien construído debut de esta cantante, poseedora de una voz que destila un tremendo poderío sonoro, Karen Lovely comunica feeling, garra y duende, se escuche por donde se escuche y, sobre todo, convence totalmente. Karen se encuentra arropada por una banda compacta, bien definida y soberbia en la más amplia acepción de la palabra, por lo que este disco se convierte en un derroche de fuerza y emotividad, expresando con elegancia bien ponderada, toda la magia que es capaz de desplegar esta mujer de voz tórrida y a la vez sobrenatural. Cada uno de los temas que se incluyen en este bien acabado trabajo es un pequeño diamante en bruto. Un disco sorprendente y esencial con un magnífico soporte sonoro a cargo de una sección de acompañamiento formada por la Dawwg House Rhythm Section, cuyos músicos (Jim Pugh y Richard Cousins entre otros), crean una atmósfera indescriptible y trepidante, bien conjuntados y, sobre todo, con un alto nivel cualitativo, donde la voz de Karen se desliza como pez en el agua, expresando con naturalidad y sin amaneramientos toda su destreza y la sensualidad que es capaz de transmitir. Un maravilloso álbum producido por Dennis Walker, con trece temas de blues, rhythm and blues y Memphis soul de alto voltaje. BRILLANTE. Amazing well built debut album of a singer gifted with a voice that exudes a terrific energy, Karen Lovely communicates feeling, magic and specially an extreme conviction. Karen is backed by a compact strong band, perfectly teamed and superb, in the broadest sense of the word, which makes the album become a waste of emotional passion, displayed with a balanced taste, the magic this woman with a torrid supernatural voice is able to perform. Every song included in this perfectly built cd becomes an uncut diamond. An essential surprising album with the valuable support of The Dawwg House Rhythm Section, whose

musicians (Jim Pugh and Richard Cousins among others), create an unbelievable exciting atmosphere, thanks to their well teamed work but especially their high quality level, which make Karen's voice glide in her element, naturally expressing on an unaffected way, the skills and sensuality she tastefully displays. It is a wonderful album with Dennis Walker’s final production and thirteen hot flaming blues, rhythm and blues and Memphis soul tracks. GREAT.

Joe Ferraro “Mojave Mojo”. Self Production 2008. El cantante y guitarrista Joe Ferraro y su banda llegan para desplegar todo su cálido y eléctrico twist, basado en el blues tradicional y aderezado con golpes de rock sureño, a lo ZZ Top y Allman Brothers Band, aunque sin dejar de lado las influencias de Albert King o Paul Butterfield, sin olvidar tampoco las grandes autoridades de Chicago, como Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Elmore James o Junior Wells. Joe lleva más de treinta años en la carretera y conoce bien este negocio. Simplemente hay que escuchar este álbum para darse cuenta que Joe Ferraro y su grupo suenan con contundencia y, sobre todo, demuestran una gran experiencia, basada en aquel refrán que dice “sabe más el diablo por viejo, que por diablo” máxima que puede aplicarse con fidelidad a este músico y a los músicos que le acompañan y que son Richard Berglun al bajo y Orlando Reynolds a la batería, quien presume de haber tocado hace mas de cuarenta años con Alan Wilson de los Canned Heat. Música de carretera y de ‘honky tonk’, argumentada con propiedad e interpretada con gancho y mucho ‘swing’. MUY BUENO. Singer and guitarist Joe Ferraro and his band come back to present their warm electrifying twist, firmly rooted on traditional blues. All their music is spiced with Southern rock, in the path of ZZ Top and Allman Brothers Band, but also with Albert King and Paul Butterfield influences, together with the mark of great Chicago blues masters like Howlin 'Wolf, Muddy Waters, Elmore James or Junior Wells. Joe has been on the road for more than thirty years, so he really knows the music business world. Simply listen to this album and you will realize Joe Ferraro and his band sound with an special strength and amazing experience. It could be defined by that proverb which says "there is no substitute for experience”, sentence that can be perfectly applied to this artists and the other musicians who back him. Richard Bergium on bass and Orlando Reynolds on drums, who claims to have been playing more than forty years with Canned Heat’s musician Alan Wilson. Roadhouse and honky tonk music, properly displayed and performed with lots of groove and 'swing'. VERY GOOD.

Vincent Yannucci “SecondWind”. Starsound 2010. Funky blues con muy buen sabor y delicado gusto, es el resultado de la propuesta del líder de este atemporal proyecto titulado “SecondWind”. Vincent Yannucci es un compositor y arreglista, que toca los sintetizadores y la percusión con clase, gusto y autoridad, Vincent sabe además transmitir muchas y diferentes sensaciones al oyente, a través de un puñado de canciones bien dispuestas, trabajadas sobre todo con un cuidado estilismo sonoro y unos arreglos innovadores, llenos de originalidad y fantasía. Un álbum sofisticado en el que se perciben muchas y variadas influencias, al margen de que por encima de todo prevalezca un ‘neo hip blues funk’ y mucho groove. Un disco que invita tanto al relax como al movimiento, dependiendo del estado de ánimo de quien

lo escuche y la predisposición que tenga en ese momento. De cualquier forma es un disco atrevido y para nada vulgar, que sorprenderá a muchos de vosotros. MUY BUENO. Funky blues with delicious flavor and delicate taste is what you will find in the new proposal coming from the leader of this timeless project entitled "SecondWind." Vincent Yannucci is a song-writer and arranger who plays synthesizers and percussion with taste, class and knowledge, Vincent also brings different feelings to the audience through a handful of well-arranged songs, performed with care, tasteful sound and innovative very original arrangements. It is a sophisticated album which gathers many different influences, where the prevailing trace is what we could call 'groovin’ neo hip blues funk’. Here is an album that invites us to relax or put in movement, depending on how your feelings and willingness are when you listen to it. Rocky Jackson “Testify!”. High Life / BlindRaccoon 2010. La verdad es que he quedado gratamente sorprendido y profundamente seducido por la manera auténtica y respetuosa de interpretar los blues de la vieja escuela que tiene este cantante y guitarrista llamado Rocky Jackson. Su sensibilidad y el modo tan genuino y apasionado que tiene de abordar el blues, es simplemente magnífica. En éste “Testify!” Rocky aborda y se adentra con pericia, sentimiento y respeto por los tortuosos caminos del profundo ‘mojo’ sureño del Delta blues, con el que en ocasiones nos transporta por los bares y tugurios del West Side de Chicago. Ernest W. ‘Rocky’ Jackson III nació en 1947 en Austin, Texas y aprendió de forma autodidacta a tocar el bottleneck, a fuerza de ver actuar a Hound Dog Taylor. Durante los años setenta Rocky se estableció en Los Angeles, para poder tener la oportunidad de tocar blues todas las noches, ya que en aquellos años California era una zona mucho más activa en el campo del blues. De 1980 a 1988, Rocky Jackson fue miembro de la Magic Blues Band, banda que acompañaba a diferentes solistas, incluyendo a Coco Montoya, Paul Butterfield o George ‘Harmónica’ Smith entre otros. “Testify!” es una muy recomendable selección de trece canciones, interpretadas por Rocky Jackson y su grupo, donde el espíritu de los grandes maestros prevalece en todo momento. BUENÍSIMO. The true thing is I have been pleasantly surprised and deeply caught by the genuine respectful old school blues, coming from singer and guitarist Rocky Jackson. The sensitive so genuine and passionate way he has to deal with the blues is totally amazing. In "Testify!" cd Rocky walks with great feeling and respectful skill, along the winding roads of southern Delta blues and deep 'mojo' that, sometimes, takes us to Chicago West Side bars and joints. Ernest W. 'Rocky' Jackson III was born in 1947 in Austin, Texas and self learned to play bottleneck, seing how Hound Dog Taylor did it on live gigs. During the seventies Rocky settled in Los Angeles, looking for opportunities to play blues every night, because in those years California was more active in the field of blues. From 1980 to 1988, Rocky Jackson was regular member of The Magic Blues Band, the backing band of different solo artists, like Coco Montoya, Paul Butterfield or George 'Harmonica' Smith among others. "Testify!" Is a highly recommended selection of thirteen songs by Rocky Jackson and his group, where the spirit of great masters prevails over other musical aspects. GREAT.

Ron Beer “Somebody Help Me!”. Boogie Boy Blues 2010. Tanto el proyecto como el resultado final de este álbum son fruto del trabajo del tándem formado por Ron Beer y Lou Sabatini, dos compositores canadienses que, desde que se conocieron y hasta el momento, han escrito juntos mas de ciento veinte canciones, diez de las cuales se encuentran en este disco que comentamos y que es el primer proyecto conjunto que ve la luz en formato de disco compacto, pues no en vano ambos llevan trabajando juntos desde hace ya algunos años. Este “Somebody Help Me!” muestra el talento de estos dos poetas, quienes nos proponen un viaje por su particular visionario mundo. Además de Ron Beer, en estas grabaciones encontramos a Paul Schofield tocando saxo, flauta y clarinete, Steve Didunyk a los teclados y acordeón, Mike Tabaras a la guitarra principal, George Danes trompeta, Alex Paris bajo, John Maydehm bateria, David Figliano conga y percusión y Jay & Mike Olsen voces. Un disco fresco, entretenido, con una variada selección de tempos y arreglos, que se podría calificar como groovy-blues con mucho sabor. MUY BUENO. Both the album project and its final result come from Ron Beers and Lou Sabatini hard work. They are two Canadian composers who, since the moment they met till now, have written together more than a one hundred and twenty songs. They have selected ten to be included in this album, that is their first joint project that sees the light in compact disc format, as they have been working together for several years. "Somebody Help Me!" shows the talent of these two poets, who drive us along a journey through their particular visionary world. Besides Ron Beer, you will also find Paul Schofield on sax, flute and clarinet, Steve Didunyk on keyboards and accordion, Mike Tabaras on lead guitar, George Danes on trumpet, Alex Paris on bass, John Maydehm on drums, David Figliano, on congas and percussion and Jay & Mike Olsen on vocals. A cool pleasant album, including a wide range of tempos and arrangements, that could be described as flavoured groovy-blues. VERY GOOD.

Dave Moretti Blues Revue “Bluesjob”. Self Production 2010. Maravilloso y trepidante combo de origen italiano, que combinan con gusto y muy buen criterio el jump blues y los sonidos de la west coast. La banda está liderada por su cantante, compositor y armonicista Dave Moretti, quien guía a sus Blues Revue con autoridad y aplomo. Moretti es un enamorado de Walter Horton, Junior Wells, James Cotton, Little Walter, los dos Sonny Boy y, sobre todo, George ‘Harmónica’ Smith y Kim Wilson, sin olvidar su pasión por Al Blake, Gary Smith, Mark Hummel, Rod Piazza, Charlie Musselwhite o Sugar Ray Norcia, por nombrar algunos de sus favoritos de todos los tiempos. En el cd se incluyen tres versiones (Percy Mayfield, Ray Charles y Little Walter), y el resto son temas suyos. Su pasión y devoción por este género queda sobradamente demostrada en este formidable disco que despide swing en todas y cada una de los diez temas con los que el oyente va a disfrutar en cuanto los escuche. Dave Moretti canta con convicción y buenas maneras, mientras que soplando demuestra tener auténtico ‘big fat tone’, un fraseo elegante y un buen recorrido, mientras que Los Blues Revue suenan compactos y disciplinados. Ellos son Domir Nefot guitarra, Emanuele Pavone bajo y Alessio Sonfilippo batería. Para la grabación del disco han contado con la participación de algunos colegas, que refuerzan mas si cabe el material aquí incluido. MUY BUENO. Wonderful exciting combo coming from Italy who tastefully and

cleverly combine jump blues and West Coast sounds. The band is led by singer, songwriter and harmonica player Dave Moretti. He drives The Blues Revue with authority and composure. Moretti worships Walter Horton, Junior Wells, James Cotton, Little Walter, the two Sonny Boy and especially George 'Harmonica' Smith and Kim Wilson, not to mention his passion for Al Blake, Gary Smith, Mark Hummel, Rod Piazza, Charlie Musselwhite and Sugar Ray Norcia, to name a few of his favourites of all time. The cd includes three versions (Percy Mayfield, Ray Charles and Little Walter), the rest are own songs. His passion and devotion for this kind of music is totally evident in this amazing album, which overflows swing in every one of the ten cuts you will immediately enjoy. Dave Moretti sings with conviction and good taste, and on harp he shows he has a true 'big fat tone', an elegant phrasing and a good run, while The Blues Revue give a compact professional sound. You will find Domir Nefot guitar, Emanuele Pavone, bass and Alessio Sonfilippo drums. They have also included some good musicians and friends who strengthen all cd songs. GREAT.

Marshall Lawrence “Blues Intervention”. Self Production 2010. Nuevo trabajo del cantante canadiense, además de compositor, poeta, guitarrista, bohemio… Marshall Lawrence. Esta vez nos propone un nuevo trabajo acústico, hermoso y bien acabado, con diez temas propios, una canción tradicional, otra de Tommy Johnson y una tercera de Robert Johnson. En este “What?” el trío desgrana diez poderosas y contundentes canciones, como es natural todas ellas guiadas y dirigidas por la voz, junto a la rugiente y distorsionada guitarra de su líder Martin Ettrich, quien además ha compuesto la totalidad de los temas, excepto “Brush With The Blues” firmada por Tony Hymas y Jeff Beck. Schmitz, bajo y Benny Korn, batería han acompañado a Carey Bell y Louisiana Red en diferentes momentos de su carrera y han compartido escenario con Defunkt, Bootsy Collins y Mothers Finest. Este disco fue grabado en vivo en los estudios Tresohr Oberhausen/Alemania, y es destacable el empleo de muy pocos ‘overdubs’ en la grabación del mismo. BUENO. A trio coming from the most industrialized country in Central Europe... Germany. The Almost Three are a rocky power blues-rock band, although you can find some different influences in their music. In this "What?" they have included ten powerful and straight songs, all them perfectly driven by the voice and the roaring, distorted guitar of the band leader Ettrich Martin, who has also written all tracks, except "Brush With The Blues" signed by Tony Hymas and Jeff Beck. The band members Max Schmitz, bass and Benny Korn, drums have played with Carey Bell and Louisiana Red on different times of their careers and have also shared stage with Defunkt, Bootsy Collins and Mothers Finest. This album was recorded live at Tresohr Oberhausen/Germany studios, and it is remarkable the use of very few overdubs on it. GOOD.

Mingo Balaguer & Félix Slim “Live In The Basque Country”. Gaztelupeko Hotsak 2010. Blues interpretado desde lo más profundo del corazón con la elegancia y la maestria de dos músicos de gran calibre emocional y técnico. Félix Slim es natural de Ceuta y está dotado de una habilidad natural para tocar la guitarra. Félix domina todos los palos del blues, su conocimiento de la técnica fingerpickin’ le permite rescatar el repertorio de los viejos bluesmen de Piedmont, e interpretar rags con enorme efectividad y talento. Como cantante es convincente, excepto su particular inglés aunque, eso sí, la fonética la borda. Dotado de una técnica envidiable, Mingo Balaguer aprendió a tocar la armónica sobre los once años de edad, y hoy dia le considero entre los cinco mejores armonicas de blues españoles. La carrera profesional de Mingo es una de las más largas y prolíficas dentro del panorama bluesero de la península, pues lleva tres décadas recorriendo toda lnuestra geografía, participando en un sinfín de grupos, proyectos e historias. La larga lista de armonicistas de primera fila con los que ha tocado es también extensa y destacable, y algunos nombres a modo de ejemplo son Charlie Musselwhite, Carey Bell, Gary Primich, Sugar Ray Norcia, Bruce Ewan, Jerry Portnoy o Paul Lamb. Finalmente mencionar que como cantante, Mingo es sobrio y convincente. Este disco que comento es uno de los mejores trabajos de blues acústico que se han realizado en España. MUY BUENO. Blues played from the deepest part of the heart with the mastery elegance of two first class emotional and technical musicians. Felix Slim comes from Ceuta and he is gifted with a natural skill to play guitar. He really knows all blues styles and he is an expert of fingerpickin' guitar, which allows him to get old Piedmont bluesmen repertoire back and play rags with great effectiveness and talent. As a singer he is convincing, despite his particular way of speaking English, though his phonetics are excellent. Gifted with an enviable technique, Mingo Balaguer learned to play harmonica when he was only eleven years old, and now I believe he can be placed among the top five Spanish blues harmonica players. Mingo's career is perhaps the longest and widest ones of Spanish blues scene. For more than three decades he has been touring around our country, participating in different groups, projects and other blues stories. The long list of first-row harp musicians he has played with, includes so prominent names

like Charlie Musselwhite, Carey Bell, Gary Primich, Sugar Ray Norcia, Bruce Ewan, Jerry Portnoy or Paul Lamb. Finally mention Mingo is also a convincing restrained singer. Personally I think this album is among the best acoustic blues ones made in Spain. GREAT.

Cee Cee James “Seriously Raw”. FWG Records 2010. Escuchando la increíble garra, expresividad y fuerza vocal que posee esta mujer, no cabe la menor duda de que Cee Cee James ha nacido para cantar e interpretar los blues. James sabe cómo conectar con el público de forma fácil y directa, transmitiendo toda la herencia, esencia y mensaje del blues, porque lo vive y lo disfruta de forma apasionada y expresiva. Esta nueva Janis Joplin lleva el blues en la sangre y al escuchar esta selección de trece temas que contiene el cd, uno puede darte cuenta inmediatamente de que todo cuanto digo es totalmente cierto. El álbum fue grabado en directo durante el Festival de R&B de Sunbanks a finales del 2009, e incluye canciones de diferentes y variados autores, entre los que se encuentran Willie Dixon, Hound Dog Taylor, B.B. King, Tina Turner, Luther Allison, Don NIx, Robert Johnson, Kris Kristofferson, más el tema “Mercedes Benz” popularizado por Janis Joplin y otros tres firmados por la propia Cee Cee James. La banda que la acompaña cumple perfectamente su cometido y está formada por Rob ‘Slide Boy’ Andrews guitarra ritmica y slide, Chris Leighton batería, Dan Moler bajo y Jason Childs guitarra solista. MUY BUENO. Listening to the amazing personality, expressiveness and vocal strength this woman gathers, it becomes evident Cee Cee James was born to sing and play the blues. James knows how to connect with audiences in an easy direct way, giving them the true blues heritage, essence and message, because she feels and enjoys it on a passionate expressive way. This new Janis Joplin has the blues in her blood and if you listen to the thirteen songs, you will immediately realize it is true what I say. Aynsley Lister “Tower Sessions”. Manhaton 2010. Con la inclusión de un teclista en el seno del grupo del cantante y guitarrista Aynsley Lister, la banda ha conseguido el sonido que estaba buscando y, además, le da a Lister una libertad y una comodidad mucho más relevante que la que tenia hasta el momento. Aquellos que conozcais la trayectoria del grupo lo podreis verificar escuchando este nuevo trabajo realizado en vivo. El álbum fue grabado desde el Tower en la ciudad inglesa de Winchester. Este “Tower Sessions” muestra el poderio de Aynsley Lister y su grupo, en una colección de once canciones que son algunas de las que tocan habitualmente desde hace cinco años por los escenarios, lo que significa que no se han incluido overdubs, ni cualquier otro efecto de estudio. Además, la banda interpreta una magistral versión del tema de Prince, “Purple Rain”. La voz y la guitarra de Aynsley Lister cuentan con el inestimable soporte de Simon Small batería y voces, Midus bajo y voces y Dan Healey teclados. Un buen trabajo, fresco, lleno de vida, vibrante

Bottleneck John “Northern, Heart, Southern Soul”. Bark Lake 2010. Una más que excelente colección de temas acústicos basados en la música tradicional con raices. Blues tratado con interés, cariño y mucho respeto por un estudioso del country blues como es el cantante, compositor y guitarrista Bottleneck John, quien en este álbum también toca mandolina, banjo, guitarra Resonator, percusión, ‘foot stomping’ y kazoo. Bottleneck John desgrana con pasión trece temas llenos de vida y de gran intensidad, todos ellos escritos por él mismo. En este “Northern, Heart, Southern Soul”, John tiene algunos músicos como invitados que tocan instrumentos como el contrabajo, piano, tuba, violin o armónica, creando de esta forma un ambiente bucólico e intimista. En suma, un cálido y penetrante paseo por las esencias musicales del sur, de la mano de este talento, que convierte sus canciones en una pura delicia para los oidos. MUY BUENO. Brad Vickers & His Vestapilitans “Stuck With The Blues”. ManHatTone 2010. Buena combinación de formas, estilos y diferentes etapas del blues es lo que nos presenta el cantante y guitarrista Brad Vickers en su segundo álbum. Brad nos sumerge en su particular mundo con su personal visión y concepción del blues, en catorce canciones escritas por Tampa Red, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Berry… etc, junto a una buena muestra de su talento como compositor y arreglista, ya que Vickers firma seis de los catorce temas incluidos. Tanto él como sus músicos, los Vestapolitans, se muestran inspirados, creando a lo largo del disco una atmósfera envolvente, mágica y relajada. El disco está muy bien equilibrado pues incluye desde Chicago shuffles eléctricos, hasta el Memphis blues que se hacia en los años veinte, como el estupendo “Vestapol

Rag”. El cd viene también avalado con la garantia de haber sido producido por Dave Gross, quien interviene tocando en ocho de los cortes, además del guitarrista Bobby Radcliff invitado en un par de temas. Un trabajo agradable y variado, que seguro os va a entusiasmar, sobre todo si os gusta la mezcla del skiffle, el ragtime y el good-time-blues. MUY BUENO / GREAT. Good combination of forms, styles and different blues stages is what singer and guitarist Brad Vickers gives us on his second album. Brad takes us into their special world with his personal vision and conception of blues, in fourteen songs written by Tampa Red, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Berry... etc, along with a good sample of his talent as a composer and arranger, as Vickers signs six of the fourteen songs included. He and his musicians, The Vestapolitans, are really inspired, creating a calm, magic and relaxed atmosphere. The album is very well balanced, as includes from Chicago electric shuffles to the kind of Memphis blues that was done in the twenties, as the great "Vestapol Rag." The cd also comes with the guarantee Dave Gross production, who also plays in eight cuts, as well as guitarist Bobby Radcliff as guest musician in a couple of songs. It is a pleasant and varied work that will please you, especially if you like the mixture of skiffle, ragtime and good time blues. GREAT.

Small Blues Trap “Red Snakes & Cave Bats”. Shelter Home Studio 2010. Una banda de músicos griegos unidos por una única pasión, tocar blues, que es lo que más les gusta y satisface. Los Small Blues Trap no son otros que el reputado músico de blues griego Paul Karapiperis guitarra steel, guitarra slide, teclados, armónica y voz, Panagiotis Daras guitarra, slide y acústica, Lefteris Besios bajo y Stathis Evangeliou batería. Aparte del blues propiamente dicho, el grupo combina en su música diferentes elementos, como el rock de los setenta y algo de jazz. Trece canciones tortuosas, ambiguas y a la vez mágicas, cantadas de manera relajada, sobria y pausada con el característico y peculiar tono de voz de Paul Karapiperis, a medio camino entre Tom Waits y Leonard Cohen, quien también es el compositor de la mayoría del repertorio incluido en este, “Red Snakes & Cave Bats”. BUENO. Here comes a band of Greek musicians sharing the same passion, to play blues, which is what they like and satisfy them most. The Small Blues Trap are well known Greek blues musician Paul Karapiperis, on steel and slide guitar, keyboards, harmonica and vocals, Panagiotis Daras guitar, slide and acoustic guitar, Lefteris Besios, bass and Stathis Evangeliou drums. Besides playing properly blues, the group combines different elements in his music, like seventies rock and some jazz. Thirteen winding ambiguous but at the same time magical tracks, sung in a relaxed, restrained peaceful way, with the original peculiar Paul Karapiperis’ voice, halfway between Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, who has also written most of the repertoire Included in this, "Red Snakes & Bats Cave”. The Vincent Hayes Project “Reclamation”. North 61 Records 2010. Este tipo es un auténtico killer del nuevo blues del siglo XXI. Vincent Hayes proyecta con ímpetu y energía su manera de entender el blues y lo hace con gusto y maestría. The Vincent Hayes Project presenta once composiciones escritas por el propio músico donde, en todas ellas, se respira el auténtico espiritu y sabor de un blues bien trabajado y muy ordenado, gracias a la pericia con que abordan los temas tanto Vincent como, naturalmente, los músicos que le acompañan. El grupo está formado por Vincent a la guitarra y voz, David ‘The

Butcher’ Alves bajo, Donnie Hugley batería y percusión, además de Christian VanAntwerpen piano, Fender Rhodes Hammond C-3, clavinete y Wurlitzer y Steve ‘Doc’ Yankee piano. Un buen disco de blues moderno realizado con gusto y un estilo completamente atemporal. Blues honesto, sensitivo, interpretado con pasión y un punto de desesperación con la intensidad suficiente que se debe de exigir a cualquier banda que toque los blues. MAGNIFICO. This guy is a real blues killer of the new century. Vincent Hayes displays with impetuous energy his particular approach to the blues and he does it with a tasteful skill. Jo’ Buddy & Down Home King III “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright!”. Ram-Bam 2010. El cantante y guitarrista finlandés Jo’ Buddy, vuelve de nuevo a la carga con un cd calentito debajo del brazo, que saca chispas y donde pone todo el fuego en el asador, con masivas y rugientes dosis de blues de garaje, eso si, infectado del sonido del blues del Delta, donde incluye rags y muchos, muchos riffs de guitarra sucia, sudorosa e hipnótica. Si John Lee Hooker levantara la cabeza estaria gratamente sorprendido de la música de estos dos jóvenes valores, Jo’ Buddy y Down Home King III, quien se encarga de tocar la batería y la percusión. En la música de este dúo encontramos influencias de R.L. Burnside, Hound Dog Taylor, J.B. Hutto, John Lee Hooker e incluso del tristemente fallecido Lester Butler. Ambos músicos tienen punch y carisma y, en este nuevo disco, atacan once temas sabrosos y al mismo tiempo brutales, pero sobre todo desenfrenados, pasionales y con mucha energía vital. Colaboran también en este “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright!”, tema que, por cierto, se incluye en el disco, Little Victor armónica, Veli-Matti acordeón, Jan Pethman cencerro y conga y Tommi Laine bongos y rubboard. MUY BUENO. Finnish singer and guitarist Jo 'Buddy comes back with a warm electrifying cd under his arm, where he has put all the eggs in one basket. You will find different influences on this duo music, from RL Burnside to Hound Dog Taylor, JB Hutto, John Lee Hooker, and even to the late Lester Butler. Both musicians have great punch and charisma and, in this new album, they have included eleven savoury wild tracks, but over all, intense, passionate and full of vitalist energy. You will find some guest musicians on this "Everything's Gonna Be Alright!", -song that is also included in the cd-, like Little Victor harmonica, Veli-Matti on accordion, Jan Pethman cowbell and conga and Tommi Laine, on congas and rubboard. Victor Aneiros “Brétemas da Memoria”. Gaztelupeko Hotsak 2010. Nuevo trabajo del cantante, compositor y guitarrista gallego Victor Aneiros, en esta ocasión grabado para el sello vasco Gaztelupeko Hotsak. Para aquellos que no esten demasiado familiarizados con éste músico, decir que es un artista autodidácta y heterodoxo en muchos aspectos musicales, por lo que no es un músico de blues al uso, pero si que integra este estilo en su esencia y concepto. Rock-blues de vanguardia, bien trabajado, concebido con elegancia y plasticidad. Aunque durante los ochenta formó parte de distintas bandas, no fue hasta 1999 cuando empezó su andadura musical grabando bajo su propio nombre y editando el magnífico “Que el Blues te Acompañe” para el sello Cambaya. En este nuevo “Brétemas Da Memoria”, Victor Aneiros plasma con todo detalle su personal firma y particular sello, siguiendo el mismo camino que en discos anteriores. Letras poéticas en gallego, junto a la participación, entre otros, de Javier Vargas y Mauri Sanchis, además de una sección de metales que imprimen un magnífico colorido al proyecto. BUENÍSIMO. New piece of work by Galician singer, songwriter and guitarist Victor Aneiros, recorded for Gaztelupeko Hotsak Basque label. For those of you who are not too familiar with him, say he is a self- taught musician and in many aspects an unorthodox artist. He is not really a blues musician, but he always adds this style to the essence and concept of the music he plays, that can be defined as avant-garde rock-blues, well-crafted and displayed with elegance and good taste. Although he was member of different bands during the eighties, it was not until 1999 when he began his musical career, recording under his own name an splendid album called "Let The Blues Be With You" for Cabaya Records. In this new "Brétemas Da Memoria", Victor Aneiros gives us a detailed vision of his particular and personal stamp, and follows the same path as he has done in previous albums. Poeticsl lyrics sung in Galician, with the special contribution, among other guest musicians, of Mauri Sanchis and Javier Vargas, plus a horn section which give a coloful beautiful air to the whole recording. VERY GOOD.

Dino Coccia “Swung Drawn & Alterated” Note-Records 2010. // Bob Haddrell & Dino Coccia “A Shaded Spot” Note-Records 2010. // Nigel Price Organ Trio “Live!” Note Records 2010. La compañía británica Note Music nos envia tres cd’s de jazz-blues, más jazz que blues pero, sobre todo, mucho groove. Dos de ellos son del batería Dino Coccia, uno firmado bajo su propio nombre y el otro compartido con el pianista y cantante Bob Hadrell, este último cd con más influencias bluesy que en el “Swung Drawn & Altered” donde Dinno está acompañado por Nigel Price a la guitarra y Pete Whittaker al órgano, además de la participación como músicos invitados de Art Theman al saxo tenor, Robin Jones a la percusión y Alan Glen armónica en un tema. El álbum consta de diez canciones firmadas entre otros por Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, George Benson o Henry Mancini. Como ya he comentado, “A Shaded Spot” es un disco más bluesero aunque con muchas, muchísimas inflexiones jazzy. La estrella es Bob Haddrell, quien canta e interpreta once cortes a la manera de los pianistas de la escuela Kansas o West Coast, es decir swingando a lo Count Basie o Lloyd Glenn por poner dos pianistas bien diferenciados entre sí. Los temas están firmados por Dino Coccia y el propio Bob Haddrell con la excepción de la canción “Natural

Selection” que ha sido escrita por el bajista del grupo Jim Mercer y Alan Glen que toca la armónica precisamente en ese mismo tema.Finalmente el disco “Live!” del guitarrista Nigel Price contiene ocho cortes de jazz fresco con solos de alto nivel cualitativo, interpretados con gusto y sobriedad. Temas de West Montgomery e incluso de Duke Ellington se suceden de la mano de Nigel Price, quien está acompañado por Pete Whitaker al órgano y Matt Home batería. British label Note Music has sent us three jazz-blues cds, with more jazz than blues, but especially with a lot of groove. Miranda Louise “A Sure Cure Of The Blues”. Ripete 2008. Esta mujer posee una voz que es un puro torbellino. Miranda tiene unas cualidades vocales francamente envidiables y, a través de su encantadora presencia, insufla y comunica feeling a raudales, un feeling y una magia que se transmiten a través de un repertorio cuidado, enérgico y tremendamente contagioso. Miranda Louise es buena, muy buena, y es una de esas voces femeninas que no deberían pasar desapercibidas, no sólo para el aficionado al blues sino incluso para el profano, ya que transmite muchas y diferentes sensaciones.
