paralela y paradójicamente a aquellas

))DISPARO dispara((

White color can have a lot of

connotations, however, beyond

purity references, we believe that it

is important to incite to fill this color,

an invitation to create, to profane the

calm which might symbolize this color

in order to be transgressed. And if that

wasn’t enough, it is said that a body is

white when all the colors are present

in the spectrum, so, paradoxically,

to those calm references to this

color, it also exists in its own essence

something uniting and loud which

allows and even demands the presence

of other things, a lot of things, after all,

we are beings who hardly ever stop,

despite the immense calm or the lack

of it, which is always and constantly

inviting to reflection, inspiration and,

from that, to creation itself.

For that matter we have invited our

contributors to use the white color

in this publication, that kind of white

which is awaiting and at the same time

it contains everything, which proposes,

demands and equally screams in each

of its presentations.

Actitud estoica o fingimien-to.

IN WHITE

To him, they are already parents of a grandfather, grandchildren of a child. They see him crooked on the sofa, twined around his age, forgetting the years he has lived. He hardly breathes or eats and the cinnamon spots color his skin, which is closer to the bone as the days go by, a tissue that draws like a formidable bow on every breath. They see him napping and waking up in silence like a turn signal that can’t tell the difference between day and night. However, sometimes, when he is awake and strong enough, with or without a cause, he gets mad with someone like he could, deep within, break the chains that tie him to his dementia. Shortly afterwards his strength fades away, but the anger atmosphere persists the whole morning. This surprise happens less and less frequently. A while ago, everybody would make a mental note of the things he had forgotten, but now they just celebrate if they see a little glimpse of his memories. Sometimes he goes by the window on his own, as if trying to prove that he still controls his body, however, she stumbles, making him remember that a long time has passed since he dropped the pencil and grabbed oblivion instead. When he goes for a walk to the park and looks like a captain surrounded by the as-sault guard, neighbors show him respect and keep his memories in a good shape. He acts normal, with the crystal clear truth in his eyes, assenting briefly with his hands. No one fools themselves; everyone knows that even though the world is struggling to let him go, everyday is a new step closer to loss. Maybe it is the ardu-ous pace of an old man, or the wild trot of a child.

ODE TO BLEACH

I have been living alone for nine years now, and I have never understood any of the washing machines I have had to live with.

I can also say with pride that I have managed the impossible with every laundry; I have shrunk my clothes to unheard-of limits. I have dyed all my roommates’ work shirts in pink, de-stroyed bills and napkins with phone numbers on them, pulled off buttons from dresses in a ‘soft wash’ and the most unheard-of thing of all is that I have managed a lighter to burst in-side the washing machine (Trust me, it happens).

Needless to say I don’t know where the detergent or the softener goes and no matter how many notes I leave on the washing machine because most of the times I get it the other way. Oh God, no… I don’t know.

But I have something which has never let me down. An ally which has always been there for me, which you can find in every shop, from ‘Super Rotterdam’ to the shop across the street , it is 40 cents worth, with a peculiar smell, a unique touch and an incomparable power.

The true white of my life, only it gives that to me. Bleach.

WHITE SHEET OF PAPER

It’s impossible for people to believe in me if I am the first one who doesn’t. I don’t understand the world without a little suf-fering and now I feel like crying. And yet, this sheet of paper is still empty and time is running out, but bright twinkling stars keep revolving. Muses get lost in physi-cal bonds that neglect the individual. Sex

fluids inspire them in several situations, but this white sheet of paper is still vir-gin and the stuck author’s scorn makes it to walk to an irremediable emptiness. No one is safe from adversity and conflict, and if someone is, their marble tomb would be aware of a sweet death, closer to limbo. Even the author who faces the

new world that he is creating, he does it with a bitter suffering of being a god who creates characters who were born with their roots lost and far from pleasure. The artist just wants to fulfill their primal needs, essential in life, while he waits, in front of this white sheet of paper, for the muses to appear.

when did you start in the pho-tography world?I started around 1984-85. I remember it quite well because I was studying by that time. It was a couple of years be-fore I finished my degree when I decid-ed joining photography.

when did you decide quitting medicine and start working in the art world? and how do your medical studies affect your work?I was in the fifth year of my medicine degree(1985) and I was one year from finishing when I found photography and got me addicted. I decided finish-ing my degree for it was just one year.I had already decided that I wanted to work in the photography world but in a very specific field: University research. In those times, there were nothing re-motely similar in Spain. I was aware of needing to be a graduate.

how does your medical education affect your work and your job?It affects not only my work and my job but my life in general, because I was crazy about medicine and I took it very seriously. I worked a lot and I gave my heart and soul to medicine. This showed me my capacity for hard work, analysis, sacrifice and, definitely, for everything that takes to win a challenge like being

at the university. It also taught me how to gage my skills and know the research methods. Actually, the field I work in is humanistic research, since I joined pho-tography in 1987, but I apply it in a more scientific way. In that sense I am more carthesian and perhaps that separates me from my colleagues, who also work in the humanities world, and have had that education from the beginning. They haven’t had the scientific method and they’re not as methodic and carthesian as I am. I believe it is one of the main aspects medicine has aided in this field, and, without a doubt, as a personal edu-cation and as a human experience

to what extent is it important mastering technique?Mastering technique is important be-cause it is the language we use. If we want to tell something, we need the key techniques of the language we are go-ing to use, in photography, in music or whatever. Although you must not get obsessed and consider technique as the final goal of our work, absolutely not. Technique is the medium, abso-lutely necessary to reach a conclusion, but it is not remotely the goal.

how did you produce images built with plenty pictures? All my work revolves around what I call “the poetics of obsession“, this means

that all my projects - three in my pho-tography career- have a common tone: “the poetics of obsession” tone. The first project I was asked was an il-lustrated report about the city of Cadiz. 15.000 images, and five years shooting three days a week systematically. The second project was the “Natura Homi-nis” project, which started with the reflection towards the body strictly. Later an abstract project came, “Taxon-omies”: 400 nude pictures, very police and systematic. Later on, I continued with the second part of that project, which is my current project, “Natura Hominis: Escenarios”. It is an auto-graphical project that I’ve been work-ing for a decade now. I also wanted to work with “The poetics of obsession” because of reminiscing about my per-sonal experience and my memory. This I achieved it with texts that were devel-oped on my own emotions, with images that recorded reality in a compulsively and obsessively detailed way. I try to feedback myself to get a good feeling.

what personal bond do you have with your work?A complete connection, because my work is my life and my life feeds back my work, I mean, I try the experience of photography to enhance my life, and, obviously, I try my photogaphy to en-hance my life as long as it is possible.

Page 80: DISPARO blanco

to what extent do you need the character you shoot to be in-volved?Because characters of my current pro-ject are people who belong to my world -I mean, they are not professional mod-els- lots of them don’t have a relaxed attitude towards the camera. Some of them have some concerns about pos-ing and sometimes I have to seduce them and trick them to do it; but there are others who do it perfectly well. What I do really need, somehow, is for them not to act in a overreacted part of themselves, but to be absolutely nor-mal. In that sense there are some who helps more and makes my work easier. But not just because they are more helpful they are going to give better or worse results to the camera. Some-times when somebody shows shyness it gives a wonderful portrait and some-body who is relaxed in excess doesn’t give a good result. It depends, each person is a whole universe.

what purpose do you seek in your work?I seek to cross the fascinating and tur-bulent waters of life in a more interest-ing way, as plain as that.

your project natura hominis : es-cenarios, you started it in 1997, and you’re still working on it.

how do you get on with realising such a long term project?I get it on fine. It is something that goes with my methodic and obsessive at-titude. I’d rather work on a long term project that extends through decades than be constantly switching projects. In my situation, what I must get is the project to keep being rich and stimulat-ing for the audience, but without get-ting detached from the work itself. It is challenging, as challenging as start-ing new projects. But I get it on well, although there are periods that I don’t take any pictures, especially when I’m going through emotional situations, because I can spend months, even a year without shooting because I don’t have time for it. There are times that I don’t feel like shooting, If I am sad or depressed, or stressed or just because I have too much work... But I consider it inherent to the kind of work I’m do-ing. It’s impossible for me to be sad and suddenly start being hypercreative and willing to take pictures, it is something I just can’t do.

how do you combine working as a curator, a photographer and a teacher? They can be perfectly combined. Be-cause when the three professional fields are in the same field of knowl-edge, and particularly photography, the

three of them feed back one another. The fact that I am a teacher, a curator and a photographer all at once enhance the things I do on each field. Teaching keeps me in touch with young people, which nurtures my personal work and as a curator as well. I’m seeing young people’s work, there’s nothing more en-lightening than that, and the fact that I am a photographer helps me a lot in my duties as a curator. When I work as a curator I take into account the impor-tance of preparing an exhibition, but at the same time I know how it is to be at the other side of the fence, the art-ist’s side, because I have been at that side, too. Therefore I can get my work as a curator done with a little empathy with the artist, this would never hap-pen If I wasn’t a photographer. Plenty times I have had to clip more than one artist’s wings who was so demanding, and I could clipped them appropriately because I have been in that situation as well… On the other hand I have cheered someone up who was panicking be-cause of an exhibition, And I could do it because I have been through that situ-ation, too.The important thing is not getting out of your professional area, in this case photography. Getting involved in one matter or another can be enriching, as long as everything is backed up with professionalism.

what type of work is more ap-pealing as a curator in order to prepare an exhibition?Absolutely every type of work. From the more purely, documentary, and ob-jectively intended photography to the more constructed, fictional, and af-fected photography. From the deeply truthful photography to the metaphor-ic, implied and indirect in its message photography. From huge to little for-mat. From autobiographic experience photography to the raw realities which are so far from one’s life photography. I don’t have any kind of prejudice in that sense.

do you have any future project in mind? The only project i have is continuing

my photographic project, my classes and my work as a curator. At a personal level, my project is trying to be happy.Regarding exhibitions, I have a pro-ject for next year in the new art cent-er in Alcobendas. It has also been published Exit magazine, a portfolio of mine. In a near future, I’m planning to go to Tenerife on the last days of july to be a jury of the FOTONOVIEM-BRE 2011 selection (Bienal de foto-grafía de Tenerife). I’ll be guest tutor in November in Gijon(Asturias) for the winner of an scolarship as well. I have planned a lot of things, as everybody else, I guess.

what would be your advice for a photographer who is just starting?

He or she must pay attention, observe everything with curiosity, and enhance his/her sense of criticism, through photography or not. But above all s/he must observe the world with a fresh curiosity and with a sense of criticism. This doesn’t mean that I see the world in a negative way, but with a developed perspective of the situations of every-day life, an intelligent perspective, that is what I mean with ‘sense of criticism’. Before starting to use cameras, s/he must observe the world in an intelligent way, because if s/he makes it, making it real is just a matter of method and learning the language, the rest is just an interesting story to tell.I recommend every creator who is just taking off to stimulate their sense of criticism above all other things.
