徳島大学薬学部長

徳島大学薬学部とかぜぐすり，そして未来の創造へ

　どの家庭にもある総合かぜ薬の普段あまり目にしない

成分記載，一度手にとってご覧ください。○○○エフェ

ドリンという成分に気付かれたでしょうか。徳島大学薬

学部は，このエフェドリンと少なからぬ関係がありま

す。エフェドリンは，気管支を拡張して咳を鎮める作用

があり，麻黄と呼ばれる植物から単離構造決定された有

機化合物です。これに成功したのが徳島出身の長井長義

博士です。長井先生は帝国大学（現東京大学）薬化学講

座初代教授，日本薬学会初代会頭を務められた日本の薬

学の父です。長井先生の薬学会会頭就任講演で日本の薬

学が目指す方向の一つとして「未知新薬を製すること」

が掲げられました。これに沿って，先生は国策製薬会社

として大日本製薬（現大日本住友製薬），そして出身地

徳島における教育機関としての徳島高等工業学校応用化

学科製薬化学部の創設（大正11年，1922年）にご尽力さ

れました。このように徳島大学薬学部は我が国唯一の工

学系に端を発する国立大学薬学部として中国四国地区最

古の歴史を持ち，創薬を目指した教育研究を推進し，有

為な人材を産学官界に輩出してきました。その後も平成

４年設置の現医薬創製教育研究センターを中心にその伝

統は連綿と我が学部に受け継がれてきています。

　さて，平成18年に薬剤師教育６年制化という大きな変

革が訪れました。これに合わせ，徳島大学薬学部も６年

制薬学科（定員40名）と４年制創製薬科学科（定員40

名）からなる２学科制を採用しています。６年制薬剤師

教育の目標の一つは，臨床現場で真に活躍できる薬剤師

の育成です。これには臨床現場の協力と薬学からの臨床

現場への積極的な関与が不可欠です。徳島大学薬学部

は，医学部，歯学部，大学病院，先端酵素学研究所等と

ともに，臨床現場そして我が国の有数の生命科学研究拠

点である蔵本キャンパスに位置しています。医療現場か

らの協力を得やすいという薬剤師教育にとっての恵まれ

た立地条件，そして薬学部臨床薬学講座３分野を病院に

隣接する医学臨床Ｂ棟に配置し，薬学に従来欠如してい

た医療現場に対応した研究（トランスレーショナルリ

サーチ）体制の構築を基盤とした臨床薬学教育が推進さ

れています。そして教育目標として研究者としての薬剤

師「Pharmacist -Scientist」の育成を目指しています。

　このように，創薬の伝統に加え，臨床薬学教育にも積

極的に取り組んでいますが，このような取り組みで充分

でしょうか。まだまだ不十分と考えています。そこで，

徳島大学薬学部の教育方針として「インタラクティブ

YAKUGAKUJIN 育成」を掲げ，薬学の新たな未来の創

造に貢献したいと考えています。薬が関係するものを含

め，人類の福祉と健康に関与する様々な分野が経済成長

や国家財政にあたえる影響は，近年飛躍的に大きくなっ

ています。また，製薬産業は知識集約型産業の代表とし

て我が国の経済成長の牽引車となり得るものと，その発

展が期待されています。大きく変化する社会情勢を反映

して，薬学人（薬学部卒業生）＝薬剤師という固定観念

にとらわれた薬学教育は早晩その限界に遭遇するものと

思われます。そこで徳島大学薬学部では「職種にかかわ

らず薬学における各領域を充分理解し，社会あるいは他

分野との広範かつ密接な連携構築と未踏分野開拓が可能

な，高度な専門性を有する人材」をインタラクティブ

YAKUGAKUJIN と命名し，このような人材育成を教育

理念とし種々の事業展開を行っています。

　薬学部卒業生（インタラクティブ YAKUGAKUJIN）

の活躍現場は，社会変化を背景として薬剤師，創薬研

究者などという従来の枠組みを超え，予想を超えた領

域へ拡大するのではないでしょうか。様々な分野で

活躍できる人材に分化成長可能なインタラクティブ

YAKUGAKUJIN 育成を通じ，薬学の未来を予測するの

ではなく，薬学の未来を創造したいと考えています。薬

を人間の手で自在に作り出せるか否か，明確でなかった

時代，長井先生は「未知新薬を製すること」という薬学

の未来を創造されました。薬学を通じて未来を創造した

いという高い「こころざし」を持つ若者が，有意義な時

間を過ごせる学部でありたいと願っています。多くの若

者の参集をお待ちしています。

Tradition of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Rooted in Drug Discovery

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of

Tokushima University originated as the Department

o f Pharmaceut ica l Technochemistry o f the

Tokushima Higher Technical School founded in

1922. Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai, a Tokushima native of

Tokushima Prefecture who is world-famous for the

discovery of “Ephedrine” , once said in a speech

given at the time of his elevation to become the first

president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan that

one of the directions that pharmaceutical sciences

in Japan should take is “innovative creation of new

drugs.” In order to achieve this objective, Dr. Nagai

helped to found Dainippon Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

(now Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd.), as

a pharmaceutical company for implementation of

national policy, and the Department of Pharmaceutical

Technochemistry of the Tokushima Higher Technical

School as a suitable educational institution. With such

a history, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences

has pursued education and research from the special

perspective of drug discovery based on a tradition

as Japan's only national university pharmaceutical

sciences department springing from an engineering

background, and boasts a large roster of alumni who

have distinguished themselves in industry, academia,

and government. This tradition continues to this

day with the establishment in 1992 of the Institute

for Medicinal Research attached to the Faculty

of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which joins with the

university's advanced base, Medicinal Herb Garden

and the Naruto Marine Research Station to perform

drug discovery research and education that is unique

anywhere in the nation.

Educational Circumstances Advantaged in Life Sciences

Research Park

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences shares

the Kuramoto Campus with the Faculty of Medicine,

the Faculty of Dentistry, the University Hospital,

Institute of Advanced Medical Sciences, constituting

one of the most advantageous locations in Japan

for life sciences-related facilities. Faculty members

located at the Kuramoto Campus are also members of

the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, enabling mutual

links and cooperation resulting in a world-class

life sciences research site. Joint lectures between

different faculties, research conducted in labs outside

of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and other

activities, can help students to become familiarized

with life and medical sciences, and with clinical

settings. In addition, in the first such arrangement

of its kind in Japan, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical

Sciences has transferred three research labs in the

Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, together with the

Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry, into

the Clinical Research Building-B, to enhance research

in clinical settings (translational research), an area

of pharmaceutical sciences that has previously been

manifestly inadequate, and to provide current clinical

pharmaceutical education. Furthermore, the Faculty

of Pharmaceutical Sciences cooperates with each

research lab of the University Hospital Pharmacy

Dept. and the Institute for Genome Research, and

students can position themselves in those five

research labs as research students or graduate

students.

Cultivation of ‘Interactive YAKUGAKUJIN’

As can be seen from the foregoing, the Faculty

of Pharmaceutical Sciences is taking advantage

of the concentration of medical facilities at the

Kuramoto Campus to add a second pillar of clinical

education to its long tradition of drug discovery.

To take full advantage of this characteristic, which

is rarely seen at other universities, the Faculty of

Pharmaceutical Sciences has launched the “Interactive

YAKUGAKUJIN Cultivation Project.” Interactive

YAKUGAKUJIN is admittedly not a famil iar

term, being specially coined by the Faculty of

Pharmaceutical Sciences to refer to human resources

with the ability to acquire a broad range of knowledge

and skills, and to link up and respond to diverse

fields of pharmaceutical sciences. As an educational

objective for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences,

using the two pillars of drug discovery and clinical

education in two undergraduate schools and two

graduate degree courses to develop excellent drug

researchers and excellent pharmacists is surely a

natural objective, but is this alone really sufficient?

With the many problems confronting the medical

profession today, such as the aging society, rising

medical costs, and increasing medical specialization,

expectations are rising that graduates in the Faculty

of Pharmaceutical Sciences will be active in many

different sectors to find solutions to these problems.

But in these conditions, merely turning out excellent

pharmacists or drug researchers is not sufficient

for responding to society's needs. At the Faculty of

Pharmaceutical Sciences of Tokushima University, it

is believed that “regardless of the career path, human

resources with a full understanding of pharmaceutical

science, and who can build wide-ranging, close links

with society and with other fields, and with advanced

specializations” are needed, and this philosophy for

human resources education has now been articulated

under the name of “Interactive YAKUGAKUJIN.”

With the conversion of pharmaceutical sciences

into 6-year educational programs, and with the

deregulation resulting in a sudden increase in the

number of pharmaceutical sciences programs at

private universities, pharmaceutical sciences in

Japan have entered a period of high instability.

However, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of

Tokushima University has entrusted the Committee

on Future Vision to look at “what shape the Faculty

of Pharmaceutical Sciences should take” in five or

10 years from now, and reforms are currently being

promoted based on the above philosophical concepts,

toward the goal of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical

Sciences with a national prominence.

Tokushima Higher Technical School was founded. Course of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Applied Chemis try Eng ineer ing ( inc luded the subcourse o f Pharmaceut i ca l Chemistry )was estab l i shed in the Tokushima Higher Technical School.Course of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was established in the Tokushima Higher Technical School.Tokushima Higher Technical School was transferred to the Tokushima National Technical College. The course of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was changed to course of Pharmaceutical Engineering.The University of Tokushima was established as a National University under National School Establishment Law (Law No.150), and Tokushima National Technical College was incorporated into the University system. 概　要　Outline

　附属医薬創製教育研究センターは1993年に設立されました。

　同センターは新規医薬品のシーズの同定・化学合成，及びがん，感染症，遺伝性代謝疾患の治療や再生医療の

ための治療薬（合成化合物，核酸分子，組換え酵素）の開発を目指しています。

Institute for Medicinal Research was founded in 1993. The research focus is on the identification and synthesis of new medicinal seeds, and the development of

novel therapeutics (chemical compounds, nucleic acid drugs, and recombinant enzymes) applicable for human diseases, including cancer, infectious diseases, inherited metabolic diseases, and regenerative medicine.
