Imposing images ofskeletons and skulls comes from the pre-Columbian times. Modern Middle American skeletons convey humor. Craftsmen create them to illustrate and celebrate life, not death. The images remind us that no one escapes death, regardless of his/her station in life

However, Indian groups such as the Otomi, the Nahua, and the Huasteca still use bark and tissue paper images of pre-Christian gods of agriculture in religious ceremonies. The most important flower associated with El Da de los Muertos is a type of marigold. Its golden yellow color and distinctive smell attract the souls towards the offering. People make paths of marigold petals from the ofrenda to the door or along the path to the cemetery to guide their relatives souls Los Cempasuchil

El cementerioLos Das de los Muertos are the days in which the families go to the graves of their close kin. At the gravesites family members engage in sprucing up the gravesite, decorating it with flower, setting our and enjoying a picnic and interacting socially with other family and community members who gather at the cemetery. Families remember the departed by telling stories about them. The meals prepared for these picnics are substantial, usually featuring meat spicy sauces and special egg-battered bread, cookies, chocolate and sugar confections in a variety of animal or skull shapes. Gravesites or family altars are profusely decorated with flowers adorned with religious amulets and with offerings of food
