Don Diego, un acaudalado caballero de unos 60 aos de edad, espera en unaposada de Alcal de Henares la llegada de dos damas, doa Irene y su hijaPaquita, hermosa joven de 16 aos, procedentes de Guadalajara.

Doa Irene, viuda y pobre, ha ido all para sacar a Paquita del conventodonde estaba educndose pues, contra la voluntad de la joven, aunque no lomanifieste por respeto hacia su madre, la ha destinado ya a don Diego, quien

segn su opinin y debido a sus virtudes, -es el hombre ideal para su hija,adems de que tal matrimonio solucionara sus apuros econmicos.

Pero Carlos, sobrino de don Diego, oficial culto, valiente y caballeroso, sinque su to lo supiese y sin que l conociera los planes de su to, tambin seha enamorado de Paquita desde tiempo atrs, por lo que se haban seguidoviendo por las noches en el jardn del convento, con la complicidad de lacriada de la joven, quedando el secreto slo entre ellos.

Por una carta de Paquita, Carlos se entera de las pretensiones de doa Irene

y se presenta en la posada para rescatar a la muchacha de tan desagradablesituacin.

De pronto, to y sobrino se encuentran y se reconocen. Ninguno de los dosconfiesa al otro los motivos de su estancia en Alcal. Don Diego se enfada yordena a su sobrino que se marche a cumplir con sus obligaciones militares.Carlos, por respeto, obedece; pero, en medio de la noche, una carta deCarlos dirigida a Paquita llega por equivocacin a manos de don Diego y ste,al enterarse de todo, exige sinceridad a la joven quien le confiesa haberaceptado casarse con l slo porque se haba resignado a obedecer a su

madre.

Don Diego ordena a Carlos que regrese y ms tarde le expone los hechos adoa Irene. sta se indigna y recrimina a su hija, pero don Diego comprendela pasin de los jvenes y, al darse cuenta de lo ridculo de sus pretensionesante la juventud de los enamorados, renuncia a sus aspiraciones, une lasmanos de Carlos y Paquita, y abraza como padre a la que quera hacer suesposa. Culpa de todo este enojoso asunto al "abuso de la autoridad, a laopresin que la juventud padece en manos de padres y tutores" y, lleno debondad, bendice a la pareja afirmando que tambin- ser feliz con los hijos

de aquel matrimonio que l ha hecho posible.

Upon its content, this work pursues a moral to criticize thecustoms of the era and offer as a counterexample the conductfollowed by Don Diego.

The style is simple, fast and sober, his prose is pure and perfect,the dialogue is alive and psychologies are well delineated.

Realistic background, is a national theater, the themes andcharacters it presents, and the description of the environments

This work consists of only seven characters are:

Don Carlos, is a young educated, nice guy and submissive to his uncle. Hiscourage is revealed near the end of the work, the time Mrs. Irene experienced a fitof rage.

Doa Irene: a woman is pushy, which is moved by a practical sense that borderson selfishness talks incessantly, and when at rest, writes letters.

Dona Francisca is obedient and sensible girl, pretending to be naive, but who feelsguilty because he lives the thrill of thwarted love.

Don Diego is the character who is involved in more scenes. Reasoner being agentleman, honest, generous and caring, you feel tied to the opinion of thepeople by the way it's going to give.

Rita, Simon and Calamocha these three characters are the three servants, all threehave very funny characters.

Idea highlights:

The idea of this most remarkable work is a marriage for convenience.

Personal opinion:

Well, it's a book that in part I liked and no .Because i not share the ideas of Paquitaprotagonist, much less those of his mother. I could not submit to something justbecause my mother has decided. I bristle at the attitude of Mrs. Irene during thework.

But I really liked because it had to be just a man who put the situation, evenknowing that is the biggest hurt. And the only thing that will lose out. I like vouchingfor true love and freedom and that the claims against marriages of convenience soabundant at that time (and today).
