C.3. Training a guard dog

The trainer waits until the dog is hungry and then hides. Then his assistant appears and calls the dog affectionately by its name. When he gets near the dog, he offers it a piece of meat. If the dog jumps for the meat without thinking, the assistant smacks it with a rolledup newspaper.

The trainer lies face down on the ground with the dog stretched out next to him. He keeps his hand firmly on the dog's back to prevent it from standing up.

Every day the trainer goes round the garden with the dog, repeating the word 'guard'. When the dog is used to this, he uses the orders 'go' and 'guard'. The final stage is to give the same orders from a distance, without moving.

For a few nights, the trainer goes round the garden with the dog, stopping at certain places and saying 'guard here' at each place.

The trainer's assistant pretends to be a thief, and the trainer 'finds' him. He tells the thief to stand still, and orders the dog to bark. When it barks three times, he gently closes its mouth, giving the order 'shh, shh'.

The trainer puts a cat in a cage. When the dog tries to run towards it, the trainer says 'Stay', pulls the lead, and squirts ammonia above the dog's head.

The trainer takes the dog to a place where people eat standing up. He tells the dog to sit and orders something to eat. He eats slowly but watches the dog. If it picks up food from the ground, he pulls on the lead

and smacks the dog gently, taking anything it has picked up out of its mouth.

The assistant brings another dog with pepper in its hair. If the guard dog tries to attack it, the pepper will make it sneeze and stop the attack. Then the assistant quickly takes the other dog away.

It was my first day it school in London and I was half-excited and halffrightened. On my way to school I wondered what sort of questions the other boys would ask me and rehearsed all the answers: 'I am nine years old. I was born here but I havent lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It's about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago." I also wondered if it was the custom for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it.

No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the centre of the playground, expecting someone to say 'hello', but no one spoke to me. When a teacher called my name and told me where my classroom was, one or two boys looked at me but that was all the curiosity my arrival aroused.

My teacher was called Mr Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn't stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens and he had decided to read aloud to us from David Copperfield, but first he asked us if we knew Dickens' birthplace.

I had read an article about Dickens in a magazine the previous week, so I knew the answer. Mr Jones asked several boys the same question, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: 'Timbuku', and Mr Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: 'Portsmouth', and everyone stared at me because Mr Jones said I was right. This didn't make me very popular, of course.

'He thinks he's clever,' I heard Brian say.

After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian's team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.

'He's big enough and useless enough,' Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.

I suppose Mr Jones remembered Dickens, too, because when the game was nearly over, Brian pushed one of the other team and he gave them a penalty. In the country, we had played football in a field, but here the pitch was asphalt. As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down instinctively and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed and bleeding. Brian took out a dirty handkerchief and offered it to me.

'Do you want to join my gang?' be said.

At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.

Antonio Marchesi, 24, from Catania in Sicily, is probably the world's unluckiest lover as well as one of the most persistent. Antonio's troubles began last September when Giulietta Guarneri, 19, moved into the house opposite with her family, and Antonio fell in love with her at first sight.

At first Antonio tried traditional methods. When he spoke to Giulietta in the street and she ignored him, he sent her flowers. He called at her house but her parents did not let him in. After that, he wrote several letters and poems and dropped them in her letterbox, but Giulietta tore them up without opening them.

Since she was resistant to poetry, Antonio decided to test the power of music. He bought
