Socialentomology+anthropology=visualenthropology
SincetheendofXIXcentury,whenphotographyemerged,andthroughouttheXXcentury,whenradio,cinemaandtelevisionwerein-vented,oursocietieshavegonethroughtrulyfundamentalchanges.Indeed,thesechangeshavecometogetherwithpolitical,socialandeconomicdeve-lopmentsthathaveoccurredintertwinedduringthissameperiodoftime. Logically, all these transformationshavemodified thepro-ductionofworksofartasneverbeforeinHistory.Nodoubts:technologicalinnovationandtheemergenceofnewmediahaveallowedusanunprece-dentedaccesstoinformationandculture,unthinkableinoldertimes. Intheartworld, thesedevelopmentshavealsoresultedintotheproliferationofinstitutionssuchasmuseums, centresandschoolsofart, exhibitiongalleries, and themultiplicationofprofessionalssuchusagents, culturalmanagers andmediators, critics, curators, researchers, collectors, appropriationists, communicatorsand, indeed, artists. Withinthiscontext,andwiththeaimofinvestigatingthisrea-lity,thatis,thecontemporaryresultsofthisstringoftransformationsandtheirinfluenceonartcreation,MiguelSoler(Sevilla,1975)ispresentingEnthropo-logy,hislatestexhibition,atthePalaciodePimentelinValladolid.Soler,whohasbeencalledaSocialentomologist,usesthistermasastartingpointforhis latest investigation.

Therefore, theenthropologist’sroleistoattemptanappropriateimplementationanduseoftechnologicaldevelopments inordertocounteract thenegativeeffectsthatpoliticalpowers’influencehasonus. Initially,MiguelSolerbelieved tobe thefirstonewhohadcoinedthetermenthropology(Socialentomology+anthropology=Enthropo-logy)–“IbelievedIhadcoinedanewword”hesays-,butthenheresearchedandlearntthatthiswordhadbeenpreviouslyusedbyotherauthors.Hewasutterlysurprised,however,whenheverifiedthatthoseauthors’definitionsofthetermcloselymatchedhisowndefinition.LéviStrausscoinedthistermin1974inhisbook“TristesTropiques”.Lateron,itwastobeusedbyGeorgeSteiner,in1974,inhiswork“NostalgiafortheAbsolute”,whereSteinerde-finedthenewdisciplineasthe“scienceofextinction”.Fromthisdefinition,itcouldbeassumedthatEnthropologywouldbeusedasamoralisingexampletostudysocialcatastrophesandextremesituationssothatthesewouldnothappen again.
