A Long Swim Looking for LaughsThe New York Times: April 5, 2011

“The Umbrella Plays,” as befits its title, is full of waterworks. There are, mostarrestingly, the white plastic buckets of water that get dumped over heads and emptiedsideways onto characters‟ bodies. And then there are the tears, the oh so many tears:

wracking sobs, misty eyes, messy heaves, all trickling and streaming out from onefraught encounter to the next.

Written by Stephanie Janssen and directed by Daniel Talbott, this 75-minute play at the Tank  is a series of not-quite-interwoven vignettes: relationships unfoldingand unraveling, a woman‟s monologue to a dead lover, an almost-suicide. Bothstructurally and in its level of sophistication, it reminds one of those romantic comediesin which disparate, loaded moments are collaged to create a larger world, a world inwhich, as it says in the “Valentine‟s Day” trailer , there is “always a chance for romance

or disaster.”

In other words, these umbrellas, even when working or not left behind, aren‟tkeeping anyone dry. (That‟s not entirely metaphorical; front-row audience members, take care.) Ms. Janssen‟s script doesn‟t leave much within these storms to the

imagination: “It feels kind of nice,” the suicidal woman (Jan Leslie Harding) tells us

from her perch on a suspension bridge. “Which is confusing. Because, I mean, I‟m indespair, right? Can something feel nice when you‟re in despair?”

Reader, it can. The pain here is never allowed to get too intense. And, in anycase, it‟s difficult to feel too much as an audience member when the actors are

impressing upon you, with each and every word, and with a vengeance, their ownemotional takes on the material. (Here it must painfully be noted that “The Umbrella

Plays” won an outstanding-play award at the New York International Fringe Festival in2008.)

The force with which feelings are manufactured and maintained grows quicklywearying. But then, this production doesn‟t ask its viewers to do much other than

withstand the deluge; it‟s theater as television show, with the audience there to provide

the laugh track. Presumably, we are also meant to get a bit choked up ourselves —  butforce feeding sometimes facilitates another, less sympathetic sort of choking.
