Enclosed within the same barrierreef as Raiatea is the small island of Taha‘a.

The 4,470 inhabilants live tranquil lives, fishing and raising livestock. Tahaja is often called

the¨vanilla lsland", forits numerous plantations oPblad《gold“.Raiatea may be quiet, but

Tahaja is quieter. 'nle main tourist attraction is the string of beautiful motus along the

northem reef edge.

Tahaja was once known as Kuporu (or uporu),anamewhi(h in other Polynesian centers

indicate some great migratory(:onnection.Taha'a lived in the shadow of Raiatea,itslarger，

stronger and more important neighbor.Attimes,Taha'a was a pawn in struggles between

Raiatea and the fiercerulersof Bora Bora. Taha‘a was the center for 6re walking(:eremonies，

but today they are a rare occurrence. ln 1822,the firstmissionaries arrived in Taha'a at

which time the island (ame under French control.
