EVOLUTION OF TRAFFIC IN SPAIN
PASSENGERS
During 2001, traffic in Spain saw anaverage growth of 2.6% across all airports,reaching a total figure of 144.6 millionpassengers. The figures for commercialpassengers (not including transits or othertypes of traffic such as general aviation)even registered an increase of 2.8%, with atotal of 142.8 million passengers. Generalgrowth in the network of airports managedby Aena was during 2001 4 percentagepoints higher than average growth inEurope and 3.7 compared to the whole ofACI airports1.
Amongst all the airports in the network, theincreases registered by airports with lesstraffic are particularly worthy of note, withincreases of between 20% and 75% inBadajoz, La Gomera, Murcia-San Javier andCordoba airport, and large increases in thebigger airports such as Malaga, Barcelonaand Madrid Barajas, with increases over theyear of 5.2%, 4.7% and 3.5% respectively.At the other end of the scale we haveMelilla (-12.9%), Zaragoza (-10%) andGirona-Costa Brava (-4.5%).
Amongst the top six airports, apart fromthe previously mentioned increases inMadrid and Barcelona, Tenerife South sawan increase compared to the average forthe year (3%), while the rest remained atlevels which were lower than both theprevious year and the average.
Following the historical trend of previousyears, the increases in traffic came mainlyfrom scheduled traffic, while charter trafficwent down. On the other hand, as far asspread according to destinations isconcerned, domestic traffic increasedslightly more than international, althoughthe latter is still the larger of the two with59% compared to 41%. As for trafficdistribution in scheduled and charterflights, this year has seen a strengtheningof scheduled traffic, which rose to 74% ofthe total and saw higher percentages ofgrowth.
The spread of traffic across the differentairports in the network remained the sameas in previous years:
The six airports with the greatest volumeof traffic represent 71% of commercialtraffic in Spain, with the airports of Madrid-Barajas with 34 million passengers,Barcelona with 21 million and Palma deMajorca with 19 million, being the topthree.
The next 10 airports, with more than 1million passengers, constitute 23% of traffic.
The remainder make up 6%.

The total number of operations for 2001 inSpanish airports was 1.9 million, a 2.6%

PASAJEROS
Durante el año 2001 el tráfico en España experimentó un crecimientomedio del 2,6%, repartido entre los diferentes aeropuertos hasta alcan-zar un total de 144,6 millones de pasajeros. Los datos correspondientes apasajeros comerciales (sin incluir tránsitos ni otros tipos de tráfico comoaviación general), registraron incluso un incremento del 2,8%, con untotal de 142,8 millones de pasajeros. El crecimiento general en la red deaeropuertos gestionada por Aena fue durante el año 2001 superior en 4puntos al crecimiento medio en Europa y de 3,7 respecto al total de aero-puertos de ACI1.
Entre todos los aeropuertos de la red, destacan los incrementos experi-mentados por los aeropuertos de menor tráfico, que aumentan entre el20% a 75% como Badajoz, La Gomera, Murcia-San Javier, o el aeropuer-to de Córdoba, y son importantes los crecimientos de grandes aeropuer-tos como Málaga, Barcelona y Madrid-Barajas que mantienen durante elaño un crecimiento del 5,2%, 4,7% y 3,5%, respectivamente. En el otroextremo, Melilla (-12,9%), Zaragoza (-10%) y Girona-Costa Brava (-4,5%).
Entre los seis aeropuertos de primer nivel, aparte de los aumentos yacomentados de Madrid y Barcelona, crece en relación con la media delaño Tenerife Sur (3%), mientras el resto se mantiene en niveles inferioresal año anterior y a la media.
Siguiendo la tendencia histórica de años anteriores, los aumentos de trá-fico se producen principalmente en tráfico regular, al tiempo que el chár-ter retrocede. En cambio, en lo referente a distribución por destinos, eltráfico doméstico ha aumentado ligeramente más que el internacional,aunque todavía sigue siendo mayoritario este último con un 59% frenteal 41%. Respecto a la distribución de tráfico en regular y chárter, en esteaño se ha reforzado el crecimiento del tráfico regular, que alcanza el 74%del total y porcentajes de crecimiento superiores.
El reparto de tráfico entre los distintos aeropuertos de la red se mantieneen los mismos valores que años anteriores:

Los 6 aeropuertos de mayor tráfico suponen el 71% del tráfico comer-cial en España, destacando los aeropuertos de Madrid-Barajas con 34millones de pasajeros, Barcelona con 21 y Palma de Mallorca con 19.
Los 10 aeropuertos siguientes con más de 1 millón de pasajerosconcentran por su parte el 23% del tráfico.
Y el resto, representa el 6%.
OPERACIONES
El número de operaciones totales durante 2001 en los aeropuertosespañoles fue de 1,9 millones, lo que supone un 2,6% de incrementorespecto a los valores de 2000. Las operaciones comerciales por su parte(sin incluir aviación general ni otras clases de tráfico) ascendieron a 1,56millones, con un incremento del 1,9%. El crecimiento experimentado porlos aeropuertos de Aena es superior en 3 puntos al experimentado por laRegión Europea de ACI y de 5 respecto al total de las regiones ACI.
Los tres aeropuertos que superaron las 100.000 operaciones fueronMadrid Barajas (376), Barcelona (273) y Palma de Mallorca (169). Res-

pecto al crecimiento, son de señalar los aumentos experimentadospor Badajoz (75%), Córdoba (22%), La Gomera (20%) o A Coruña(16%), y los de Madrid-Barajas (5%) y Barcelona (6%). Otros aero-puertos como Vigo (-7%), Vitoria (-6%), o Palma de Mallorca (-4%)disminuyen respecto a los valores de años anteriores.
Comparativamente, las operaciones experimentaron durante 2.001 uncrecimiento similar a los datos de pasajeros, con mayor incidencia en elmercado nacional. El 55% de operaciones en los aeropuertos son vuelosdomésticos, frente al 45% internacional, mientras que en la distribuciónregular-chárter se confirman los crecimientos de vuelos regulares y los des-censos en los servicios a petición.
CARGA
Durante 2001 se transportaron 601.063 toneladas de carga, lo que supo-ne una disminución del 5,6% frente a los datos del año anterior. Práctica-mente el 50% de toda la mercancía transportada se concentra en elaeropuerto de Madrid-Barajas, y se distribuye uniformemente entre Nacio-nal (43%) e Internacional (57%), con tendencia a equilibrarse en el futu-ro debido al mayor crecimiento del tráfico doméstico.
Respecto al reparto por aeropuertos, se produjo un aumento del tráfi-co en Pamplona (98%), Valladolid (18%), Lanzarote (11%) o Asturias(7%), mientras que aeropuertos con fuerte presencia histórica de cargatienen bajada en su crecimiento medio, como Madrid-Barajas (-4,8%),Barcelona (-13%). Sin embargo, en el aeropuerto de Vitoria se registróun crecimiento del 2%.
INFLUENCIA EN EL TRÁFICO DE LOSACONTECIMIENTOS DEL 11 DE SEPTIEMBRE
En relación con la evolución del tráfico y las previsiones establecidas parael año 2001, la tendencia de crecimiento medio de pasajeros hasta el mesde septiembre era del 4,6%, y al finalizar el año el incremento medio totalse situó en el 2,6%, con pérdida en el tráfico total de pasajeros de dospuntos sobre las previsiones, comenzando la variación en la tendencia decrecimiento medio a partir del mes de octubre de 2001 y continuandohasta situarse en el 2,6% citado.
En comparación con el resto de los aeropuertos europeos, el crecimientomedio experimentado por los aeropuertos españoles que figuran entre lostreinta de mayor número de pasajeros de Europa se sitúa muy por encimadel resto de aeropuertos de tráfico similar, a excepción de Manchester, conun incremento del 5% o Dublín, con un 3,4%.

Comparatively, operations saw growth in2001 similar to the figures for passengers,with the domestic market seeing thegreater share. 55% of operations inairports were domestic flights, compared to45% international, while the scheduled-charter distribution confirmed the growthof scheduled flights and a reduction incharter services.
CARGO
During 2001 601,063 tons of cargo weretransported, which represents a drop of5.6% on the figures for the previous year.Practically 50% of the goods transportedwas concentrated in the airport of Madrid-Barajas, and was distributed uniformlybetween National (43%) and International(57%), with a tendency to balance out inthe future owing to greater growth indomestic traffic.
As for the distribution across airports, therewas an increase of traffic in Pamplona
(98%), Valladolid (18%), Lanzarote (11%)and Asturias (7%), while airports whichhave traditionally been strong in cargotraffic saw a drop in their average growth,such as Madrid-Barajas (-4.8%) andBarcelona (-13%). However, Vitoria airportregistered growth of 2%.
INFLUENCE ON TRAFFIC OF THE EVENTS OF11 SEPTEMBER
With regard to the evolution of traffic andthe forecasts for 2001, the trend in averagegrowth of passenger numbers untilSeptember was 4.6%, and at the year's endthe overall average increase was 2.6%: aloss in total passenger traffic of twopercentage points on the forecasts, withthe variation in average growth trendbeginning in October 2001 and continuinguntil it reached the previously mentionedfigure of 2.6%.
In comparison with the rest of theEuropean airports, the average growthrecorded by Spanish airports which figureamongst the thirty with the largestpassenger numbers in Europe isconsiderably higher than the rest of theairports with similar traffic, except forManchester, with an increase of 5% andDublin, with 3.4%.
