    The earliest Buddhist structuresstill extant in Japan, and theoldest wooden buildings in theFar East are found at the Hry-

    ji to the southwest of Nara. Firstbuilt in the early 7th century asthe private temple of CrownPrince Shtoku, it consists of 41independent buildings.

    EARLY HEIANARCHITECTURE.

    The capital was moved toHeian-Kyou (Kyototoday). During this time

    the Kamakura Shogunateruled and wereresponsible for bringingBuddhism to Japan.Buddhism influence.Most Heian sculpturefeatured thick drapery

    folds in a style calledhompa-shiki, or rollingwave as well asrestrained emotion.

    FUJIWARAARCHITECTURE.

    The Fujiwara added onthe Amida Hall totemples. Amida halls

    were two L shapedstructures on both sidesof a rectangularbuilding with an Amidastatue inside thebuilding. These temples

    were constructed onthe edge of an artificialpond.

    MUROMACHIARCHITECTURE.

    The Muromachi period started when the Ashikag clan took control of theshogunate and moved its headquarters to Kyoto

    A profound change in Japanese culture happened during this period. TheMuromachi period was economically and artistically.

    Cultural change:

    Trends of the Kamakura period came to an end and culturalexpression took on a more aristocratic, elitist character

    Religious change:

    Zen Buddhism was introduced for the second time in Japan

    the muromachi period ( 1338- 15 73).

    MOYOYAMAARCHITECTURE.

    Four decades long; period of warfarebetween feudal barons, eventually peacewas restored

    Momoyama means Peach Hill which

    refers to where Toyotomi built his castle inKyoto

    Art style characterized as robust,opulent,and dynamic

    Strong use of gold on architecture,paintings, garments, and furnishings

    Meanwhile, there was a counter-aestheticinfluence from the military elite,

    encouraging rusticsimplicity Foreign influence became more prevalent
