Reading: A hotel in Nicaragua.

Hilton Princess Managua Hotel

In the heart of Managua’s business district, this six-story hotel opened in 1998.

A large mirror and windows looking out at the pool area give the small lobby a larger appearance. There is a small conversation area. The marble floors, dark wood trim, tapestry and reception desk flanked by stone lions add a European flair. The Garden Court restaurant, just off the lobby, features local and international cuisine. Weekday entertainment makes it a popular place for lunch. Clancy’s Bar has a warm English Pub atmosphere.

Amenities include airconditioning, high-speed Internet access, dual-line phones with voicemail, cable TV, a safe and a hair dryer.

The Guest Service Cycle.

The guest service cycle can be defined as spanning that period of time from the potential customer’s first contact with the hotel, through to check-out and the reconciliation of accounts. Basically the guest service cycle is an overview of the physical contacts and financial exchanges between the hotel and the guest.

The stages involved in the guest service cycle are:

Reservations:

To receive, chart, store, and assign room reservations for individuals and groups.•

Information:

To answer requests for information about rooms, hotel services, transportation, entertainment, and the • local area.

3. OCCUPANCY 2. CHECK IN

1. RESERVATIONS 4. CHECK OUT

Inglés Básico8 Inglés Básico

Check – in :

To assign the room (to match the guests’ needs to the rooms available) and register the guest. This may • also involve handling the sale of rooms and establishing credit for incoming guests.

Guest Accounting:

To open and maintain proper accounts; to keep track of guests’ charges and credits; to verify all transactions • and compile management reports e.g. occupancy reports and statistics.

Check – out:

To assist guests when they are ready to leave the hotel and to ensure that payment is received. This is • often combined with the role of cashier.

Cashiering:

To handle payment of bills; accepting credit cards; cash (local and foreign currency); traveler’s cheques • and accounts to company.

Finally, the most important task of reception staff (and indeed, all personnel in the hotel) is to provide a climate within the guest cycle that guests with to return and use the services of the hotel again. Providing service to ensure repeat custom is called relationship marketing and is the critical to the business success of a hotel.

Exercises:

In groups of 3, think about the reasons why foreign visitors might wish to visit Nicaragua. Then select 1. one main reason and prepare a promotional leaflet to attract visitors from an English-speaking country to visit Nicaragua.

Visit a hotel or search for information about the hotel, and discuss the organization of the hotel. Draw 2. an organizational chart for the hotel and explain the reasons why the hotel is organized in the way it is.

Reading Warning.

Reading: Personal Security and Health.

Staying safe is a question of common sense and taking some basic precautions. Inner city areas and townships are probably the most dangerous places, especially at night. Do not go out on your own; anywhere, and don’t go exploring unless you are sure where you are going. Don’t wear expensive looking accessories.

Pickpockets are sometimes a problem so don’t carry large sums of money. Keep some change in a side pocket so that you don’t have to produce your wallet wherever you need to tip. A money belt worn under your clothes is useful for keeping documents and money.

Don’t go near deserted or poor areas except as part of a tour group. Leave valuables in your hotel’s safe-deposit box.

Avoid traveling on any public transportation at off-peak times, unless you’re in a group of at least ten. If

a criminal points a gun at you, obey his / her orders. When traveling by car, always keep the doors locked and the windows only slightly open. When you leave the car, lock it, even if you’re getting out for just a few moments.

Make sure nothing of value is visible inside. Use supervised car parks whenever possible.

Read the tour guide extract and answer the questions.

1. Which parts of a city can be unsafe?

2. What can’t tourists do alone?

3. What precaution should tourists take against pickpockets?

4. Where should they put some money for tips?

5. Where should they keep valuable objects?

6. When shouldn’t tourists travel by bus?

7. What should tourists do with any possession in their cars?

8. Where is the best place to leave their car?

Read the text again and match the sentences halves.

1. avoid going out and a) a lot of money in your wallet.

2. It’s best to visit b) expensive jewelry in the street.

3. You must lock c) car parks that are supervised if possible.

4. You shouldn’t carry d) exploring the city on your own.

5. Avoid wearing e) certain areas with a tour group.

6. it’s a good idea to use f) your car doors at all times.
