at, by, for, from, in, or, on, to, with
along with, apart from, up to, etc.
owing to, but for, because of
in comparison with, on account of, in addition to
39
at the expense of
10.2. FUNCIONES DE LA PREPOSICIÓN
Una frase preposicional puede:
calificar a un sustantivo precedente
The girl in the car was reading a book .La chica que estaba en el auto leía un libro.
in the car califica a girl
actuar como el complemento de un adjetivo
He was happy at the good news.Estaba contento por las buenas noticias.
actuar como el complemento de un verbo

10.3. PREPOSICIONES Y ADVERBIOS
about above across after
along alongside apart around
before behind below beneath
besides between beyond by
down in inside near
notwithstanding off on opposite
over outside past round
since through throughout under
underneath up within without
Your coat is behind the door.Tu abrigo está detrás de la puerta.
Adverbio:
His wife walked behind .Su mujer caminaba detrás.
Frases verbales:
The car pulled up at the crossroads .
Verbos preposicionales:
He applied for a new job.
Frases verbales/preposicionales:
I must catch up on my reading.
41
He called with a present.
He called on her.
He called her up. He telephoned her.
He called on her. He visited her.
run for (president), take to (drink), keep up with ( the neighbours ), etc.
switch off turn on bring in
find out (discover) wash up (the dishes, etc.)
fall out reñir do in matar

Our world is one of growing complexity, increasing uncertainty, and diminishingcapability to anticipate and control outcomes.
While most other civilized countries have forsaken the death penalty, the United Stateshas increasingly resorted to it.
Like the British urban reformers from whom he learned so much, Engels wanted toturn the unhealthy and immoral city into a text: a report, an irresistible accumulation offacts and statistics, a programme for action.
The American Sunday newspapers print close to a million words each.
People probably hear more language from the media than they do directly from the lipsof their fellow humans in conversation.
The potential for a chain reaction is why Argentina matters. It could trigger the nextglobal financial crisis.
Berlusconi’s family owns virtually all of Italy’s private-sector television. Many Italiansthink this is unhealthy.
It is a pleasure to teach her.
It seems that you’ve made a mistake.
It doesn’t matter what you do.
It was considered impossible for anyone to escape.

AS / THOUGH
adjetivo / adverbio / sustantivo + as + cláusula

As it’s raining again, we’ll have to stay at home.Since he had not paid his bill, his electricity was cut off.

Because I was ill for six months, I lost my job.
Why am I leaving? I’m leaving because I’m fed up!Why are you laughing? Because you look so funny.
