Inteligencia Moral

Hay diferentes maneras de ser inteligente, de estar despierto. No todo el mundo es brillante de la misma manera.

Algunas personas están dotadas matemá camente y filosóficamente. Esa es la inteligencia de un Albert Einstein, un Alfred North Whitehead, un Bill Gates. Algunos otros están dotados de inteligencia emocional. Esto se ve, por ejemplo, en los grandes novelistas, Iris Murdochs, Anne Bya s, John Steinbecks y Alice Munroes, quienes poseen una comprensión emocional de cosas que los mejores psicólogos del mundo sólo pueden envidiar.

Luego, hay algo que podría llamarse inteligencia prác ca. Lo vi en algunos de mis amigos de la escuela secundaria, jóvenes que no podían aprobar cursos suficientes para graduarse, pero que están maravillosamente dotados de habilidades de la vida diaria y son los que el resto de nosotros se apoyan en cada vez que necesitamos resolver problemas de nuestra plomería, automóviles, techos con goteras, y mil otras cosas que las matemá cas, la filoso a ni la literatura nos facilitan para arreglar.

Hay también una cierta inteligencia esté ca, ese brillo único del ar sta que a veces se combina con lo emocional o incluso lo matemá co (especialmente en el caso de la música), pero muchas veces es una inteligencia para sí mismo.

Por úl mo, todavía hay otro po de inteligencia, la inteligencia moral. ¿Qué es eso? A veces lo llamamos profundidad, sabiduría o carácter. Cualquiera que sea su nombre, la inteligencia moral es una sensibilidad a los contornos más profundos dentro de la vida. Es una cierta comprensión de aquellas cosas que man enen la vida unida en su raíz y que deben ser respetadas para que la vida no se agriete, se desintegre, y se vuelva contra nosotros. La inteligencia moral intuye los impera vos innatos dentro del ADN de la vida misma. Capta las cosas que tenemos, y no sólo las cosas que nos gusta hacer. Pone al descubierto el cable-duro dentro del misterio de la vida y el amor.

Moral Intelligence There are different ways of being intelligent, of being awake. Not everyone is bright in the same way.

Some people are gi ed mathema cally and philosophically. That’s the intelligence of an Albert Einstein, an Alfred North Whitehead, a Bill Gates. Some others are gi ed with emo onal intelligence. You see this, for instance, in the great novelists, the Iris Murdochs, the Anne Bya s, the John Steinbecks, and the Alice Munroes, who possess an emo onal grasp of things that the greatest psychologists in the world can only envy. Then there is something that might be called prac cal intelligence. I saw this in some of my high school friends, young men who couldn’t pass enough courses to graduate, but who are wonderfully gi ed with life-skills and are the ones the rest of us lean on whenever we need to sort out our plumbing, our automobile woes, our leaking roofs, and the thousand other things that mathema cs, philosophy, and literature don’t equip us to handle. There is too a certain aesthe c intelligence, that unique brightness of the ar st which some mes combines with the emo onal or even the mathema cal (especially in the case of music) but is o en an intelligence all to itself. Finally, there is s ll another kind of intelligence, moral intelligence. What is this? Some mes we call it depth or wisdom or character. Whatever its name, moral intelligence is a sensi vity to the deeper contours within life. It is a certain grasp of those things which hold life together at its root and which must be respected so that life doesn’t go sour, unravel, disintegrate, and turn against us. Moral intelligence intuits the impera ves innate within the DNA of life itself. It grasps the things we have do, and not just the things we like to do. It lays bare the hard-wiring inside the mystery of life and love.

Where does it come from? Like other forms of intelligence, it is perhaps mainly a natural endowment, a temperament, a grace given by God as a gi to the world. But, I suspect, in most cases it is also the product of something else, namely, a certain kind of suffering and humilia on. What do I mean by that?

If we look at our lives and ask ourselves: What has made us deep? What has helped us to understand the deeper things in life? If we are honest, we will have to admit that what made us deep were not our successes or achievements. These brought us glory, but not depth or character.

What brought us depth and character are the very things we are o en ashamed to talk about, namely, our inferiori es—ge ng picked last on the school team, being bullied on the playground, some physical inadequacy, our mother’s weight problem, our dad’s alcoholism, an abuse inflicted upon us that we were powerless to stop, a slow-wi edness that perpetually le us out of the inner circle, our failure to achieve what we’d like to in life, a pain about our sexual orienta on, an addic on we can’t master, and many, many other small and big wounds and bruises that helped shape our souls.

James Hillman, our genera on’s maverick intellectual, speaks eloquently on this. Depth, he suggests, never comes out of our successes, but only out of our inferiori es and failures. And this, he says, gives us character: Our scars are like huge stones in a riverbed; they may do nothing but stay s ll and hold their ground, but the river has to take them into account and alter its flow because of them and it’s precisely this which gives a river (and a face) some character.

This truth lies at the very heart of Jesus’ life and message. When the disciples can’t fathom or accept the crucifixion, he asks them: “Wasn’t it necessary?” Isn’t there a necessary connec on between the humilia on of Good Friday and the glory of Easter Sunday? Isn’t there an intrinsic connec on between going through a certain kind of suffering and reaching a certain kind of depth?

Indeed, Jesus’ struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane, his asking God three mes to spare him from the pain and humilia on of being crucified, was precisely his own reluctance to accept that a certain kind of depth can only be arrived at by journeying through a certain kind of humilia on. And, in his case, he wasn’t just going to be picked on by the playground bully, he was going to be hung naked before the whole world. But that was the only route to Easter Sunday and he had the moral intelligence to see it.

And what the crucifixion produced is moral wisdom. That’s why the cross of Christ, as Rene Girard puts it, is the single most revolu onary moral event that has ever happened on this planet. What the cross of Christ does, as the gospels tell us, is rip away the veil the separates us from seeing inside the holy of holies.

And our own crosses and humilia ons can do that for us too. They can rip away a blindness and wake us up morally. Fr. Ron Rolheiser, OMI

¿De dónde viene? Como otras formas de inteligencia, es quizás principalmente una dotación natural, un temperamento, una gracia dada por Dios como un regalo al mundo. Pero, pienso que, en la mayoría de los casos es también el producto de otra cosa, especialmente, cierto po de sufrimiento y humillación. ¿Qué quiero decir con eso?

Si miramos nuestras vidas y nos preguntamos: ¿Qué nos ha hecho sabios? ¿Qué nos ha ayudado a comprender las cosas más profundas de la vida? Lo que nos trajo la profundidad y el carácter son las mismas cosas de las que muchas veces nos avergüenza hablar, especialmente, nuestras inferioridades: ser úl mo elegido en el equipo de la escuela, ser in midado en el pa o de recreo, alguna deficiencia sica, problema de peso de nuestra madre, alcoholismo de nuestro padre, un abuso sufrido que no podíamos parar, una len tud que nos dejó fuera del círculo interior, nuestro fracaso para lograr lo que nos gustaría en la vida, un dolor sobre nuestra orientación sexual, una adicción que no podemos controlar y muchas, muchas otras pequeñas y grandes heridas y moretones que nos ayudaron a moldear nuestras almas.

James Hillman, intelectual inconformista de nuestra generación, habla con elocuencia sobre esto. El sugiere que la profundidad, nunca sale de nuestros éxitos, sino sólo de nuestras inferioridades y fracasos. Y esto, dice, que nos da carácter: Nuestras cicatrices son como enormes piedras en un río; no pueden hacer otra cosa que quedarse quietas y sostener su terreno, pero el río ene que tomarlas en cuenta y alterar su flujo por causa de ellas y es precisamente esto lo que da un río (y una cara) algún carácter.

Esta verdad está en el corazón mismo de la vida y mensaje de Jesús. Cuando los discípulos no pueden comprender ni aceptar la crucifixión, les pregunta: "¿No era necesario?" ¿No hay una conexión necesaria entre la humillación del Viernes Santo y la gloria del Domingo de Pascua? ¿No existe una conexión intrínseca entre pasar por un cierto po de sufrimiento y alcanzar cierto po de profundidad?

De hecho, la lucha de Jesús en el huerto de Getsemaní, su pedir a Dios tres veces que le quite el dolor y la humillación de ser crucificado, fue precisamente su renuencia a aceptar que sólo se puede llegar a cierto grado de profundidad al viajar a través de un cierto po de humillación. y, en su caso, él no solo iba a ser elegido por el playground bully, iba a ser crucificado desnudo ante el mundo entero. Spreading the joy of literacy to the families we serve at the Little Portion Food Pantry of Blessed Sacrament Church. Amy Segposyan, parishioner and Usborne Books consultant, will be selling educa onal books next weekend at all the masses. You can purchase books directly for the children as a dona on, choose to purchase books for the children, or give a dona on to be used towards books. Our goal is to get at least one book per household with the average book being between $5 and $15. We have raised about $325 worth of books for the children. We need to raise about $750 un l December 3/4, so that each family can have a book to go home with at the distribu on on December 17. New for Spanish Speaker: Computer Lab Open with Bilingual Volunteer! Do you know someone who speaks Spanish and would like to improve their computer skills? Having these skills allows people greater access to informa on, the job market, and the world. Centro La Comunidad provides free child social and emo onal developmental screenings called “ASQ” (Ages & Stages). The ASQ is a first-level screening tool that is designed to iden fy children who may be at risk for social or emo onal difficul es from ages 0-5 years old. The ASQ contains simple ques ons for parents to answer about their child's behavior and social interac ons. The answers are scored and help to determine whether the child's development appears to be progressing as expected or whether the child should be referred for a free professional evalua on. ASQ can be repeated at different intervals in a child’s life to measure progress. Many parents come to Centro La Comunidad to take this assessment because of concerns they have with their child’s development. This tool has helped them to intervene at an early stage. If there is a delay, intervening early promotes and reorients children to develop at the appropriate age level.

If parents want to complete the assessment for their child, they can call or visit Centro La Comunidad to make an appointment with our Family Support Specialist, Eliza Salmon. We encourage parents and guardians with children 5 and under to take the assessment. It will give them insight into how their child/children are developing. In most cases the child is developing normally, but when parents do have certain concerns, these assessments are one of the best ways to determine if the child could benefit from a referral for a more in-depth evalua on. While these services can be very costly at a pediatrician’s office, there is no charge at Centro La Comunidad.

Centro La Comunidad ofrece evaluaciones de desarrollo social y emocional para niños. Éstas se llaman “ASQ” (Edades y Etapas), y se le ofrecen gratuitamente. El examen de Edades y Etapas (ASQ) es el primer nivel de evaluación que está diseñado para iden ficar a niños entre las edades de 0-5 años quienes puedan estar en riesgo de dificultades sociales o emocionales. El examen ASQ con ene preguntas sencillas que los padres deben contestar referente al comportamiento e interacción social del niño. Las respuestas determinan si el desarrollo del niño parece estar al nivel promedio o si el niño podría beneficiar de una evaluación profesional, la cual es gratuita también. El ASQ puede ser repe do en diferentes empos en la vida del niño para poder medir su progreso.

Muchos padres de familia vienen al Centro La Comunidad para hacer estas evaluaciones porque enen alguna preocupación sobre el desarrollo de sus hijos. Estas herramientas les han ayudado a poder iden ficar problemas y tratarles en una etapa temprana. Si existe algún retraso, intervenir temprano ayuda a promover y enfocar en los niños para que se desarrollen bien.

Si los padres desean completar una evaluación para su hijo, pueden llamar o visitar al Centro La Comunidad para hacer una cita con Eliza Salmon, la especialista de apoyo familiar. Recomendamos a los padres y a los encargados de niños que aprovechen de este servicio. En la mayoría de los casos los niños se están desarrollando bien, pero cuando los padres enen ciertas preocupaciones, esta evaluación es una de las mejores maneras de determinar si su hijo se beneficiaría de una referencia a una evaluación más a fondo. New at the Pantry We are making special food bags for children to be used in our December distribu on. Monthly Results – November Distribu on Screening & Distribu on – Screening – 155 Families; 18 walk- ins Distribu on – 148 Families, 325 adults, 341 children, 666 individuals. Over 10,000 pounds of food distributed. In addi on to canned food and dry goods we distributed: Panera Bread –240 lbs. Potatoes - 750 lbs. Produce – 80 lbs. Toilet paper and bars of soap Eggs – 148 dozen Meat – 300 lbs. Turkey Breasts – 148 We thank the Burlington Velo Bike Club for contribu ng to the purchase of and the distribu on of turkey breasts.
