PASTORS PONDERINGS

Dear Parishioners, After many weeks of first preparation for and the cel-ebration of the Christmas holidays we’ve returned to Ordinary Time. And the Liturgy itself seems to slow things down for us. The Gospel Reading this Sun-day offers us John’s version of the events surround-ing Jesus’ Baptism and his version is far less dra-matic than that of the other Evangelists. We of course find ourselves in very “interesting times,” with the velocity of events challenging our ability to keep up with much less our ability to com-prehend the consequences of them. While certainly we may feel called to “try to do the right thing” under any circumstance, we can also take solace in the apparent weakness of Jesus’ Holy Family – Mary and St. Joseph repeatedly had to ac-cept events beyond their control – and then take ad-vice from Mary’s attitude toward the events in her and Jesus’ life, which so often seemed to go far be-yond her ability to immediately understand. Indeed, she contented herself with “pondering them in her heart.” And we are told that this was enough. So, while none of us know what will come in the coming weeks and months, we can always remain assured that God is with us, that God has a special place for the weak in his Heart, and that ultimately even events that we do not understand somehow, in some way, serve to further the plan of God. May God bless and protect us all and may all that is happen-ing around us, serve only to strengthen our faith. -- Fr. Dennis

- P. Dennis

DIVINE MERCY FRIDAYS

Thank you for your continuing support of St. Vincent de Paul's effort to help the needy. At Thanksgiving we teamed up with a group called Unit-ed Across Borders to give out boxes of food including turkeys in a drive-through distribution at Fullerton City Hall. At Christmas we were able to help 155 families including 256 children with gift cards. We would like to recognize St. Philip's Youth Group and Confirmation stu-dents who made home deliveries for us during the holi-days. Verne's Plumbing made a very generous donation. Women's Council and parishioners also came to our aid. Servite High School donated 290 pounds of food and Ro-sary High School donated 1,050 pounds. When we work together, we can make wonderful things happen. Throughout the year we give out food every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9 to 11 am. Last year we helped 2,850 families or 11,208 individuals at our pantry door. In addition we made 161 home visits aiding 511 individu-als. Thank you for all you do to care for the needy in our area. St. Philip's parishioners truly are a beautiful example of Christian love and generosity in our community.

Además, realizamos 161 visitas domici-liarias ayudando a 511 personas.

SPEAK, LORD, WE ARE LISTENING

FEAST OF FAITH

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

In today’s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do any-thing, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.” God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urg-ing us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God’s word. Let’s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don’t miss God’s voice. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Greeting At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response—“And also with you,” soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a prayer for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge. God’s presence trans-forms us. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
