SALUDA DE LA ALCALDESA

Cuenta la historia de Jerez que nuestro vino ha sido a lo largo de siglos un elemento que nunca pereció ante las diferentes culturas que dominaron estas tierras. Una sabia decisión de fenicios, romanos, musulmanes y cristianos que coadyuvaron a hacer realidad la hermo-sa historia del jerez y su universal expansión, procurando una trayectoria que ningún otro caldo ha alcanzado en la historia de la humanidad.

La cultura del jerez es por tanto un elemento que nos enriquece enormemente, que nos une al pasado y al presente, y que, pese al devenir de los tiempos y sus fl uctuaciones en los mercados, sigue siendo esencia de esta tierra que se encierra en las botas que lo acunan y que llega a los paladares más exquisitos.

Por lo tanto, las Fiestas de la Vendimia que tengo el honor de presentarles es la exal-tación de Jerez al jerez, un hecho cultural excepcional, desde la celebración del nacimiento del nuevo mosto, hasta el desarrollo de un programa salpicado de citas con los vinos, con la cultura, el ocio, la gastronomía, la música y por supuesto con el caballo y el fl amenco.

Este ciclo persigue también mostrar al mundo que la vendimia en esta tierra es algo importante que se une a la magnitud de nuestros vinos, celebración que está en una misma sintonía de excelencia. Por lo tanto, estas fi estas queremos que sean un elemento dinami-zador para nuestra economía y para que este producto siga creciendo como atractivo en el ámbito turístico.

En esa línea estamos trabajando. Para esta edición hemos contado con la implicación de personas e instituciones que han aportado sus ideas mediante una comisión cuyo trabajo ha sido un primer paso en el concepto de participación e implicación que buscamos con el objetivo de enriquecer y buscar el máximo rendimiento de estos eventos.

En septiembre se abren por lo tanto uno días de excepción para Jerez. Permítanme que les salude a todos, jerezanos y visitantes, a disfrutar del programa que ofrecemos. Pero al mismo tiempo deseo que sea una invitación a descubrir Jerez por todos sus rincones y sensaciones a través de la ancestral tradición vinatera que atesoramos.

El vino es para Jerez una de las esencias de su singular universo. El vino es una

cultura, un referente social y económico imprescindible para conocer mucho de

esta ciudad, de su presente y de su pasado. El jerez es una forma de vida, una ex-

presión de la sabiduría de esta tierra que, al igual que ocurre en la crianza de sus

más añejos vinos, se toma el tiempo con esa parsimonia que sólo pueden interpre-

tarse en unos pocos lugares del mundo. La llegada de la vendimia y el nacimiento

del nuevo vino son para esta tierra una época de muy especial signifi cación en lo

social, cultural e histórico. Estamos en la ciudad que gesta, acuna y ofrece uno de

los más excelentes vinos del mundo, su esencia misma. Las Fiestas de la Vendimia

son por tanto la proclamación del jerez y de Jerez ya que al vino le son inherentes

otros iconos imprescindibles para sus señas de identidad: el caballo y el fl amen-

co, expresiones rancias y de gran hondura. Así, este ciclo dedicado a la vendimia

ofrece un programa en el que están cada una de esas identidades fundamentales.

Desde la cita con el fl amenco puramente jerezano en la mítica ‘Fiesta de la Bulería’

hasta los espectáculos que ofrecerán instituciones ecuestres de referencia interna-

cional con sede en Jerez. Pero sobre todo las Fiestas de la Vendimia rinden culto al

jerez que se esparce por sus más ancestrales calles, plazas y rincones así como por

algunas de sus bodegas –catedrales del jerez- más sobresalientes, con momentos

como la ‘Pisa de la Uva’ donde se simboliza el nacimiento del primer mosto que

surge de la uva jerezana, catas magistrales y maridadas, muestra de vinos, confe-

rencias, visitas junto a un amplio programa que anuncia a todos los que nos visitan

y proclaman a la ciudad que el fruto de la vid ya empieza transformarse e inicia el

largo recorrido que lo llevará a convertirse en uno de los productos más exclusivos

y apreciados del mundo, el jerez.

Pisa de la uvaMartes 11 de septiembre

20:00 horas

Es el anual rito del nacimiento del primer mosto con el que empieza a surgir el

jerez. En un acto que tiene lugar en la escalinata frontal de la Catedral jerezana, se

reúnen vendimiadoras, uva en canastas, arrumbadores y un lagar donde a la anti-

gua usanza se pisará la uva que pasará a ser mosto y que se aguardará en la bota

hasta que culmina su metamorfosis que por mor de la naturaleza y de los cuidados

del hombre lo convertirá uno de los caldos más sublimes del mundo. Se trata de

un acto cargado de emoción donde se rememoran antiguas tradiciones adornado

con la música, himnos e incluso el fl amenco interpretado en vivo. La Catedral aco-

ge este acto porque se rememora que en el siglo XVIII se estableció un impuesto

sobre el vino, cuya recaudación contribuyó a sufragar los gastos de edifi cación del

templo.

Pisa de la uvaMartes 11 de septiembre

La cultura ecuestre de Jerez no podía faltar en un acontecimiento como estas Fies-

tas. El caballo está presente en casi todos los eventos culturales y festivos en los

que de un modo u otro de exaltan valores endógenos, como es el caso de la vendi-

mia y el jerez. No es vano, a lo largo de los siglos Jerez ha cosechado una bien ga-

nada fama de ser tierra de caballos y caballeros. Una herencia que pervive hoy en

día. Desde la afi ción más popular hasta la presencia en esta ciudad de instituciones

de referencia mundial, que exaltan al caballo jerezano en su faceta artística, técnica

y en su crianza, este noble animal alcanza un protagonismo más que notable como

un emblema de Jerez. Algunas de éstas instituciones ofrecen en las Fiesta de la

Vendimia la posibilidad de disfrutar de lo mejor que ofrece Jerez en lo ecuestre.

A wise decision on the part of the Phoenicians, Romans, Muslims and Christians all of whom have helped to enhance the fascinating history of sherry and its expansion around the world, endeavouring to mark a trajectory which no other wine has managed to achieve in the history of mankind

The culture of sherry is therefore an element which enriches us enormously, which links us to both the past and the present, and which, in spite of these current hard times and market fl uctuations, is still the very essence of this land enclosed within the very casks which bear witness to its creation and which fi nally reaches the most exquisite of palates.

The Grape Harvest Festival which I have the honour to present here today is therefore not just an expression of the admiration which Jerez holds for its Sherry, but an outstanding cultural event; from the celebration of the birth of the fi rst must, to the preparation of a progra-mme of events encompassing encounters with our wines, culture, entertainment, local cuisine, music and of course our horses and fl amenco.

This cycle of events also attempts to show the world that the grape harvest here in these lands is an important event which, given the magnitude of our wines, culminates in a celebration of the same degree of excellence. We therefore wish to make of these festivities an event which will stimulate our economy and a product which will continue to evolve as a major tourist attraction.

We are working along this line of action. For this edition we have relied upon the commitment of both individuals and institutions, which have been able to express their ideas thanks to a commission whose work has provided the fi rst step taken in the direction of parti-cipation and implication which we seek, with the objective of achieving a general enrichment of these festivities and maximum return.

September sees the inauguration of an exceptional season of events here in Jerez. Allow me, therefore, to welcome you all, both jerezanos and visitors alike, and invite you to enjoy the programme we have prepared for you. The Grape Harvest Festival which I have the honour to present here today is therefore not just an expression of the admiration which Jerez holds for its Sherry, but an outstanding cultural event; from the celebration of the birth of the fi rst must, to the preparation of a progra-mme of events encompassing encounters with our wines, culture, entertainment, local cuisine, music and of course our horses and fl amenco.

This cycle of events also attempts to show the world that the grape harvest here in these lands is an important event which, given the magnitude of our wines, culminates in a celebration of the same degree of excellence. We therefore wish to make of these festivities an event which will stimulate our economy and a product which will continue to evolve as a major tourist attraction.

We are working along this line of action. For this edition we have relied upon the commitment of both individuals and institutions, which have been able to express their ideas thanks to a commission whose work has provided the fi rst step taken in the direction of parti-cipation and implication which we seek, with the objective of achieving a general enrichment of these festivities and maximum return.

September sees the inauguration of an exceptional season of events here in Jerez. Allow me, therefore, to welcome you all, both jerezanos and visitors alike, and invite you to enjoy the programme we have prepared for you. But at the same time I would also like this to be an invitation to discover the city of Jerez, with all its hidden corners and sensations, guided by the ancestral winegrowing traditions which we hold so dear.

sherry, the wine which permeates its ancestral winding streets, squares and corners

as well as its outstanding wineries, known locally as the cathedrals of sherry, with

such moments as the “Treading of the Grape” (an act which symbolizes the birth

of the fi rst must of the year fl owing from the crushed grapes), guided tastings and

food pairings, samplings, conferences and visits which combine to form an extensi-

ve programme of events and announces to all who come to visit that the fruit of the

vine has begun to transform and initiate the long journey which will see it become

one of the most highly appreciated and exclusive products in the world: Sherry.

The annual rite which symbolizes the birth of the fi rst must of the year. In an act

which takes place on the front steps of Jerez Cathedral we see grape pickers, fres-

hly-picked grapes in baskets, bodega workers who handle the casks, and a wooden

press and trough traditionally used to crush the grapes whose juices turn to must.

This must is then stored in casks until it completes a metamorphosis which, thanks

to the forces of nature and the care of man, turns it into one of the most sublime

wines in the world. It is a ceremony charged with emotion which commemorates

ancient traditions accompanied by music, hymns and even a live fl amenco perfor-

mance. The Cathedral provides the perfect venue for this event as it commemorates

that fact that in the XVIII century a tax was imposed upon wine, and it was the funds

raised from this tax which were used to cover the cost of building the cathedral.

The equestrian culture of Jerez cannot be forgotten in an event such as this Festival.

The horse is present in almost all cultural events which in some way or other exhort

endogenous values, as is the case of both the grape harvest and sherry. Not in vain

throughout the long centuries has Jerez achieved well-earned fame as being the

land of horses and horsemen. And this heritage pervades even today. From the

popular love of the horse to the presence in the city of institutions of internacional

prestige which exhort the Jerezano horse, in both its artistic and technical facets as

well as its breeding, this noble animal achieves a more than prominent role as an

emblem of Jerez. During the Grape Harvest Festival several of these institutions

offer us the possibility to enjoy the best Jerez has to offer to the equestrian world.

programme features great names of fl amenco song, dance and guitar; giving form

to a magical night of fl amenco. The Bulería Festival is the culmination of a summer
