Task 1. (10 x 1 = 10 marks) Read the following text. For questions 1‐10, choose the alternative a, b or c which fits best according to the text. Write your answers in the box provided on the next page. The first one has been done as an example.

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS It happened on a Thursday. It must have, because Mariam remembered that she had been restless and preoccupied that day, the way she was on Thursdays, the day when Jalil visited her at their hut. To pass the time until the moment that she would see him at last, crossing the knee‐high grass in the clearing and waving, Mariam had climbed a chair and taken down her mother’s Chinese tea set. The tea set was the sole relic that Mariam’s mother, Nana, had of her own mother, who had died when Nana was two. Nana cherished each blue‐and‐white porcelain piece, the graceful curve of the pot’s sprout, the hand‐painted finches and chrysanthemums, the dragon on the sugar bowl, meant to ward off evil. It was this last piece that slipped from Mariam’s fingers, that fell to the wooden floorboards of the hut and shattered.

When Nana saw the bowl, her face flushed red and her upper lip shivered, and her eyes, both the lazy one and the good, settled on Mariam in a flat, unblinking way. Nana grabbed Mariam by the wrists, pulled her close, and, through gritted teeth, said, “You are a clumsy little harami. This is my reward for everything I’ve endured. An heirloom‐breaking, clumsy little harami.” Mariam did surmise, by the way Nana said the word, that it was an ugly, loathsome thing to be a harami, like an insect. Jalil never called Mariam this name. Jalil said she was his little flower. He was fond of sitting her on his lap and telling her stories, like the time he told her that Herat, the city where Mariam was born, in 1959, had once been the cradle of Persian culture. “You couldn’t stretch a leg there without poking a poet in the ass,” he laughed. He described to her the green wheat fields of Herat, the orchards, the vines pregnant with plump grapes, the city’s crowded, vaulted bazaars. There is a pistachio tree,” Jalil said one day, “and beneath it is buried none other than the great poet Jami.” He leaned in and whispered, “Jami lived over five hundred years ago. I took you there once, to the tree. You were little. You wouldn’t remember.” It was true. Mariam didn’t remember. And though she would live the first fifteen years of her life within walking distance of Herat, Mariam would never see this storied tree. She would never see the famous minarets up close, and she would never pick fruit from Herat’s orchards or stroll in its fields of wheat. But whenever Jalil talked like this, Mariam would listen with enchantment. She would admire Jalil for his vast and worldly knowledge. She would quiver with pride to have a father who knew such things. “What rich lies!” Nana said after Jalil left. “Rich man telling rich lies. He never took you to any tree. Don’t let him charm you. He betrayed us, your beloved father. He cast us out of his big fancy house like we were nothing to him. He did it happily,” Nana said after Jalil left. Mariam would listen dutifully to this. She never dared say to Nana how much she disliked her talking this way about Jalil. The truth was that around Jalil, Mariam did not feel at all like a harami. For an hour or two every Thursday, when Jalil came to see her, all smiles and gifts and endearments, Mariam felt deserving of all the beauty and bounty that life had to give. And, for this, Mariam loved Jalil. Jalil owned land in Karokh, land in Farah, three carpet stores, a clothing shop, and a black 1956 Buick Roadmaster. He was one of Herat’s best‐connected men, friend of the mayor and the provincial governor. He had a cook, a driver, and three housekeepers. Nana had been one of the housekeepers. Until her belly began to swell. When that happened, Nana said, the collective gasp of Jalil’s family sucked the air out of Herat. His in‐laws swore blood would flow. The wives demanded that he throw her out. Nana’s own father, who was a lowly stone carver in the nearby village of Gul Daman, disowned her. Disgraced, he packed his things and boarded a bus to Iran, never to be seen or heard from again.

VALUES FOR SOCIETY

Edgar Cahn, the relentless social innovator, has spent his life __0__ to change things. He is now 72, and for the first 20 years of his career he built a reputation as a US civil rights lawyer and activist, fighting for the rights of ethnic minorities, women and indigenous communities. Then, __11__ forty‐four, he suffered a major heart attack, which he says “changed my life for ever and for the __12__”. From his hospital bed, he began to develop the ideas that would refocus his prodigious energies. “Lying there, I realised I had the skills to help someone deal __13__ an eviction notice, but I had no way of knowing how to help them make their building or their community a good and decent place to live,” Cahn says.

Cahn __14__ came to England, to the London School of Economics, to start work on his idea of ‘core

economy’ – the premise that every person can be an asset and that productivity must be redefined to include social as well as economic contributions. This looks beyond traditional economics to contend that we must develop a new set of values based on families, communities and civil society, and which places value on raising children, keeping families together, taking care of elderly people, and making the planet sustainable – __15__ considered worthless in the market economy, but essential to enable our communities to thrive. “Every capacity that has enabled our species to survive, __16__ caring for each other and trusting each other, has become excluded from our economic system,” Cahn says. “And I realised that there was no way we were going to build communities we wanted to live in __17__ we didn’t completely reassess our value system and start rewarding human as well as financial contributions.”

When he returned to the US in the __18__ 1980s, Cahn founded time banking, his vehicle for putting

his core economy into action. Working on the simple premise of reciprocity, time banks aim to place value on community action, promote productivity and build social networks by engaging local people in the giving and receiving of services. It allows people to amass time credits by participating __19__ or providing a service that benefits the wider community. These credits are the deposited in a time bank and can be spent __20__ a whole range of skills and services on offer from other members of the bank.

INSTRUCCIONES PARA LA REALIZACIÓN DE ESTE EJERCICIO: Duración: 30 minutos (parejas) o Este ejercicio consta de dos tareas. Deberá realizar las dos tareas.

o En la tarea 1 (monólogo) deberá realizar una exposición oral de 3 o 4 minutos de duración basada en el tema propuesto en la tarjeta que se le facilitará.

o En la tarea 2 (diálogo) deberá intervenir en una conversación de 5 minutos de duración con su compañero o compañera basada en el tema propuesto en la tarjeta que se le facilitará.

o Puntuación máxima de ambos correctores: 200 puntos. o Puede tomar notas (palabras, ideas, conceptos) para apoyarse durante su exposición /

TASK 1: MONOLOGUE Make an oral exposition about the dangers involved in the activities illustrated in the pictures below. Explain the qualities required to participate in extreme sports. Which of these qualities do you have yourself?



TASK 2: DIALOGUE You are the manager of an electrical equipment store. A customer has come in to complain about a product that does not work. Your store has a no-refund policy for goods bought during the sales.

Listen to the customer, explain your store’s sales policy and offer alternative solutions. Try to come to an agreement.

o Durante la fase de preparación de las tareas NO podrá comunicarse con sus compañeros/as. o Al finalizar el ejercicio deberá entregar sus notas y todo el material que se le facilitó. o Dispone Vd. de un máximo de 15 minutos para preparar las dos tareas.



TASK 1: MONOLOGUE Make an oral exposition about the contrast between the different teaching and learning experiences in the pictures. Discuss the benefits and problems of each one. .



TASK 2: DIALOGUE You are sharing a flat with two other flatmates. You are upset because for the past month one of your flatmates, who is a musician, has spent long hours playing music in his / her room. You need peace and quiet because you are preparing for an important exam. Lately you have spent most of your time in your room and you have not been cleaning the house, as you should have done.

Discuss the situation with your flatmates and try to come to an agreement to solve the problem.

ST OSWALD’S

“No trespassers. No unauthorised entry beyond this point by order”. Another child might have been frightened by the command. But in my case curiosity overcame the fear. By whose order? Why this point and not another? And most importantly, what would happen if I crossed that line? Of course, I already knew the school grounds were forbidden to me. By then I’d been living in its shadow for six months, and already that rule was one of the most important of my young life, as dictated by my father, John Snyde, “Stay clear of St Oswald’s”, with a warning punch to the upper arm. The punches were supposed to be friendly, I knew. All the same, they hurt. Parenting was not one of John Snyde’s special skills. Nevertheless, for the first few months I obeyed without question. Dad was so proud of his new job as Porter; such a fine old school, such a great reputation, and we were going to live in the Old Gatehouse, where generations of Porters before us had lived. There would be tea on the lawn on summer evenings, and it would be the beginning of something wonderful. Perhaps, when she saw how well we were doing now, Mum might even come home. But weeks passed and none of that happened. The Gatehouse was a historical building with tiny windows that let in hardly any light. We weren’t allowed to put up a satellite dish on the outside wall for fear of ruining the stonework. Most of the furniture belonged to St Oswald’s – and next to them our own things looked cheap and out of place. My dad’s time was entirely taken up with his new job, and I quickly learned to look after myself and not to trouble my father at all. Mum never wrote, and after a while I started to forget what she had looked like. My dad had a bottle of her perfume hidden under his mattress, though, and when he was out on his rounds, or at the pub with his mates, I would sometimes go into his bedroom, spray a little of that perfume on my pillow and pretend that Mum was watching TV in the next room, or making me a cup of milk. A bit stupid, really: she’d never done those things when she was home. Christmas approached, bringing bad weather and even more work for the porter to deal with, so we never had tea on the lawns. On the other hand, I was happy enough. A solitary child even then; awkward in company; invisible at school. During the first term I didn’t mix much; stayed out of the house; played in the snowy woods behind St Oswald’s and explored every inch of the school’s perimeter – making sure never to cross the forbidden line. My own school was called Abbey Road Juniors. I’d never liked it; but even so I feared my arrival at Sunnybank Park, the giant secondary school that I was destined by postcode to attend. Since my first day at Abbey Road I’d watched the Sunnybankers – cheap green sweatshirts with the school logo on the breast, nylon rucksacks, hair spray – with dismay. They would hate me, I knew it. They would take one look at me and they would hate me. I sensed it immediately. I was skinny; undersized, a natural doer of homework. I kept pestered my father, “Why? Why the Park? Why there?” “Don’t be a sissy. There’s nothing wrong with the Park, kid. It’s just a school. They’re all the bloody same.” Well, that was a lie. Even I knew that. It made me resentful.
