“Self-Construction with Boiled Beans” por DalíTambién conocido: “Premonition of Civil
War”
“Guernica” por Picasso.
SELF CONSTRUCTION WITH BOILED BEANS
expresses the destruction during the Spanish Civil War.
The monster in this painting is self destructive just as a Civil War is
There are many boiled beans in this painting. "one could not imagine swallowing all that unconscious meat without the
presence of some mealy and melancholy vegetable.”
he meant that there were many hardships in the war so the Spanish citizens had to do their best to deal with their problems.

SELF CONSTRUCTION WITH BOILED BEANS
With its flair for detail as gruesome as it is meticulous, Salvador Dalí's
Surrealist painting style might well have been invented for the
depiction of the unique horrors of the Spanish Civil War. This painting,
however, is one of only a handful in which Dalí turned his attention to
the tragedy that beset his homeland on July 17, 1936, when General
Francisco Franco led a military coup d'état against the democratically
elected Popular Front government. The artist's savage vision of his
country as a decomposing figure tearing itself apart preceded the
outbreak of the Spanish Civil War and thus prophetically foretold the
atrocities committed during this bloody conflict

GUERNICA
The Town of Guernica It’s a small town in northern Spain, in Basque Country.
The bombing was a way for Hitler to test some of his new weaponry.
Franco gave Hitler permission to bomb the town because the Basque country was already a source of problems for Franco
The bombing occurred on a Market day which is what magnifies the horror of it because the majority of those killed were women and children.
GUERNICAGuernica shows suffering people, animals, and buildings
wrenched by violence and chaos. bull stands over a woman grieving over a dead child in her arms.
horse falling in agony as it had just been run through by a spear (large gaping wound in the horse's side is a major focus of the painting)
Two "hidden" images formed by the horse appear in Guernica: A human skull overlays the horse's body.
A bull appears to gore the horse from underneath. The bull's head is formed mainly by the horse's entire front leg which has the knee on the ground. The leg's knee cap forms the head's nose. A horn appears within the horse's breast.
GUERNICAUnder the horse is a dead soldier
A light bulb: Picasso's symbolism is related to the Spanish word for light bulb; "bombilla", which makes us think "bomb" and signifies the destructive effect technology can have on society.
The arm of the female in the upper right carries a flame-lit lamp. The lamp is very close to the bulb, and is a symbol of hope.
Daggers that suggest screaming replace the tongues.
GUERNICAWhen made to explain the symbols in Guernica, Picasso said:
...this bull is a bull and this horse is a horse... If you give a meaning
to certain things in my paintings it may be very true, but it is not
my idea to give this meaning. What ideas and conclusions you
have got I obtained too, but instinctively, unconsciously. I make the
painting for the painting. I paint the objects for what they are
