SU HISTORIA En la ciudad prehispánica, el sitio que hoy ocupa La Ronda fue un lu-gar de encuentro junto al río paralelo a la gran quebrada que descendía del volcán Pichincha.

Durante la Colonia, surgió allí un barrio orillero que, en tiempos de la República, acogió a trabajadores y artesanos. La quebrada marcó el paisaje hasta 1914, cuando empezó su relleno y se edificaron las lla-madas Casas de Peña. Entonces, La Ronda se transformó en semillero de músicos y poetas, hasta mediados del siglo XX.

El barrio fue olvidado durante la década de los 90; pero el proceso de rehabilitación, impulsado por el Mu-nicipio desde 2007, le ha devuelto su

sitial en el imaginario quiteño, como un espacio de tradición y leyenda.

DE ADOBE Y BALCONES Varias casas de La Ronda son cons-trucciones de adobe levantadas con más ayuda de la intuición que de los planos arquitectónicos. Los patios interiores están decorados con pie-dras de río y vértebras de res. Estos detalles pueden ser observados en la Casa 999 y en la 963. Otra particu-laridad de este sector, son las casas que integraron en su construcción la peña que descendía hacia el río. La sabiduría popular transformó la pendiente en paredes.

Además existen balcones, desde don-de en tiempos románticos, las novias recibían serenatas o las señoras se contaban las “novedades” del barrio.

HISTORY In the Pre-Hispanic city, the ground that now occupies La Ronda was a meeting-place along the river, paral-lel to the great ravine that descend-ed from the Pichincha volcano.

During colonial times, there arose an outskirt neighborhood that, in times of the Republic, welcomed workers and artisans. The ravine marked the landscape until 1914, when its filling began and the so-called Casas de Peña were built. Then, La Ronda became the cradle of musicians and poets, until mid-20th century.

The neighborhood was forgotten during the 1990s; but the rehabilita-tion process, driven by the munici-pality, since 2007, returned its place in Quito’s imagery, as a space of tradition and legend.

ARQUITECTURE Several houses in La Ronda are ado-be buildings constructed with intu-ition more than architectural plans. The courtyards are decorated with a combination of river stones and cattle’s vertebrates. The rustic finish in the frames of the windows shows the use of simple tools. These details can be observed in Casa 999 or Casa 963. Another peculiarity in this part of the city, are the houses that integrated into its construction the rocks that were descending towards the river. Wisdom transformed the slope in walls and rooms were built. Samples of this type of construction are in the eastern block of the north side. The stones that jut out from the eastern block of La Ronda’s “barri-gona” walls (big belly walls) indicate the “Casas de Peña”.

THIS STREET IS AN EMBLEM OF QUITO’S Old Town, in which tales of characters and historical passages still exist. Now it comes to life, during the day, with artisans and traditional games, demonstrating the essence of this zone. At night, the scene changes to a more festive atmosphere.

Morada de la Cultura QuiteñaCOMPOSITORES, POETAS Y ESCRITORES compartían tertulias hasta el amanecer, en La Ronda. En las décadas de 1930 y 1940, los literatos Jorge Carrera Andrade, Hugo Alemán y Augusto Arias, se daban cita en la casa 963 de Ana Luisa Muñoz, que inspiró el pasillo “Negra mala”. Allí acudía también Carlos Guerra, autor de “Esta guitarra vieja”, canción símbolo del barrio. De esa época, perduran los míticos “murcielagarios”, espacios clandestinos para el debate político y la fiesta. Uno de estos funcionó en una recámara, al ras de la quebrada. La existencia de otros retiros similares sigue animando la discu-sión en La Ronda.

LA RONDA NOCTURNA Experimenta la bohemia tradicional de esta calle en la noche. Cafés y ba-res ofrecen el típico canelazo (bebida caliente de canela) empanadas de viento, espumillas y otros platos. Es un lugar para la tertulia, la diversión y la música en vivo.

JUEGOS TRADICIONALES… Durante la mañana, a la luz del sol, la calle Morales invita a vivir las tradiciones de los juegos quiteños, acompañado de personajes tradicio-nales. Las casas 989, 925, 707, 949 son los escenarios para descubrir a los artesanos quiteños y sus creaciones.

ARTE Y ARTESANÍAS La Ronda conserva su tradición sien-do morada y taller de artesanos y artistas. Las propuestas artesanales se traducen en objetos en madera, paño y hojalata, así como creaciones elaboradas en técnicas centenarias como la muestra de la Escuela Taller Quito. La sombrerería Humacatama y su propietario Luis López te contarán más sobre la elegante tradición de los sombreros de paño. La Hojalate-ría Silva es otro imperdible con sus juguetes de hojalata, Api Real con sus exquisitos productos de miel de abejas, trompos y otros objetos de madera de Zabalartes, recuerdan el por qué esta callecita es un encanto para recorrer. Recuerda visitar las casas 989, 925, 707, 949 con sus talleres artesanales y galerías.

MUESTRA PERMANENTE DE LA ESCUELA QUITEÑA Observar las técnicas y conocimien-tos heredados de la Escuela Quiteña es posible en este taller de la casa 989, donde la imaginería, el tallado, el taraceado, la pintura religiosa, la cerrajerìa y la escultura son los prin-cipales oficios. Aquí los estudiantes y herederos de Pampite y Caspicara -artistas quiteños en tiempos de la colonia- continúan con el trabajo que destacó a Quito como cuna de arte y cultura.

COMPOSERS, POETS AND WRITERS shared gatherings until dawn, in the old houses of La Ronda. In the decades of 1930 and 1940, the poet Jorge Carrera Andrade, the ensayist Hugo Alemán and the writer Augusto Arias -the latter two real neighbors of La Ronda-, came together in Casa 963, that was owned by the no less famous Doña Ana Luisa Muñoz, a beautiful woman who inspired the pasillo (a music genre) calle “Negra mala”. Casa 963 was also frecuented Carlos Guerra, a prolific creator of popular music and the author of “Esta guitarra vieja” (This old guitar), a song that became the symbol of the neighborhood. From that time have endure the mythicals “murcielagarios”, underground spaces for meetings, artistic creation, political debate and party. One of these ran in a dark room, just near the ravine, in Casa 1009. The existence of other similar retreats continues to encourage discussion in La Ronda.

Home of Quito’s culture

NIGHT ICONThe night is the time to experience the bohemian traditional of this street. Cafés and bars offer the typi-cal canelazo (a hot drink of cinna-mon) empanadas de viento (pastries stuffed with chesse), mousses and other dishes. It is a place for the gathering, fun and music, with performances by popular musicians, who play their songs live.

DAY ICON Traditional games... This is the place!During the morning, with Quito’s sun shining at its best, Morales street (also the name of La Ronda street) invites you to live the classic quiteños games. Traditional characters as the “Taita Pendejadas”, la “Pan de Ocho” y el “Diablo quiteño “await for you to play: the toad, hopscotch, table soccer, the spinning top, marbles, cup-and-ball toy or the ula ula. This happens from 10:00 to 18:00.

ART AND CRAFTSLa Ronda has preserved its tradition becoming home and workshop of craftsmen and artists. The craft proposals translates into objects in wood, cloth and tinplate as well, unique creations made with centuries-old techniques, as the sign of the Quito’s Workshop School. The Humacatama hat shop and its owner Luis López will tell you the history of the neighborhood and more about the elegant tradition of cloth hats. The tin shop Silva is another must-see with its tin toys; Api Real, with its exquisite products of honey bees; spins and other objects made of wood of Zabalartes, will let you know why this street is a charm. The 989, 707, 925 and 949 houses are scenarios to explore the atelliers and galleries.

PERMANENT EXHIBITION OF THE QUITO SCHOOLThe techniques and inherited knowledge of the Quito School can be seen in this workshop at Casa 989 (989 House), where imagery, the carving, the inlay work, religious painting, the locksmith and sculpture are the main occupations. Here students and heirs of Pampite and Caspicara - quiteños artists in colonial times - continue with the work that made Quito stood out to as a cradle for art and culture.

LOS PUENTES. Estos dos puentes fueron obras urbanas fundamentales. El puente nuevo ubicado en el extremo occidental de La Ronda, se levantó en 1909 por el caudillo liberal Eloy Alfaro. En el otro extremo de La Ronda, el Puen-te de la Paz fue construido en 1864, por el presidente García Moreno. La Ronda, por lo tanto, discurre entre un “puente liberal” y un “puente conservador”.

LA RONDA BRIDGESThese two bridges were fundamental urban works. The new bridge, located at the western end of La Ronda, was built in 1909 by the liberal leader Eloy Alfaro. At the other end of La Ronda, the peace bridge was built in 1864, by president García Moreno. So La Ronda runs between a “liberal bridge” and a “conservative bridge”.

EL BULEVAR 24 DE MAYO exhibe muestras temporales de arte y cultura, además es escenario de la vida cotidiana de este barrio. En la calle de García Mo-reno, el Quito Tour Bus hace una parada para que sus pasajeros puedan bajar caminando hacia La Ronda .

MUSEO DE LA CIUDAD. Uno de los hospitales más antiguos en Sudamérica fue el Hospital de La Misericordia, tam-bién llamado San Juan de Dios que sirvió a la población entre 1565 y 1974. Actual-mente, es donde funciona el Museo de la Ciudad, con una muestra permanente sobre la vida cotidiana de Quito hasta el siglo XIX, exposiciones artísticas y tres museos de sitio. Además, su cafetería ofrece una interesante vista panorámica del Panecillo.

CITY MUSEUMOne of the oldest hospitals in South America was the “Hospital de la Miseri-cordia” , also called San Juan de Dios, which served the population between 1565 and 1974. Today, this building is the City Museum, it has a permanent exhibition on the daily life of Quito until 19th century, art exhibits and three site museums. The coffee shop also offers you a panoramic view of “Panecillo”.

LA IGLESIA DEL CARMEN ALTO, Recientemente restaurada fue en sus orígenes, la casa de la quiteña Mariana de Jesús, elevada a los altares como Santa. La orden de las carmelitas continúa con la tradición de fe y con la producción de productos conventuales como cremas, escapularios y comestibles como los “desamargados”. El área abierta al público de el convento guarda tesoros del arte colonial de enorme valor y maravillosa laboriosidad.

THE CARMEN ALTO CHURCH Recently restored, was originally home of Mariana de Jesús, elevated to the altars as Saint by the Catholic Church. The Carmelite order continues with the faith traditions and with the production of conventual products as: creams, scap-ulars and food items like the “desamar-gados” (a dessert made of citrics). The convent’s open area to the public kept colonial art of great value and wonderful laboriousness.LA PLAZA DE SANTA CLARA desde
