Once upon a time there were three little crickets. One cricket built a house of

toothpicks while the second cricket built his house with pretzels. They built their houses very

quickly and then sang and danced all day because they were lazy. The third little cricket

worked hard all day and built his house with bones.

A big bad squirrel saw the two little crickets while they danced and played. He had a

very bad temper. He chased the two crickets and they ran and hid in their houses. He went to

the first house and threw acorns. The house fell down in minutes. The frightened little cricket

ran to the second cricket’s house that was made of pretzels. The big bad squirrel now came to

this house and threw big acorns. The house was no more, in less than a couple of minutes.

Now, the two little crickets were scared and they ran to the third cricket’s house that was made

of bones.

The big bad squirrel tried to throw the biggest acorns and knock the house down, but

he could not. He kept trying for hours, and days, and weeks, and months and years….but the

house was very strong. The three little crickets jumped with joy safely inside the house. The

squirrel tried to enter through the holes on top of the house, but the third little cricket boiled a

big pot of orange juice and put it under the holes. The squirrel fell into the pot and had all of

his fur singed off. Without his fur, the big bad squirrel wasn’t quite as big and certainly didn’t

look as bad. As the squirrel ran off, the crickets exited the house and looked at their destroyed

houses and wondered how they went wrong. The cricket who built the sturdy house explained

to the others that they acted lazy and did not try to build sturdy houses.

The two little crickets now felt sorry for having been so lazy. They built their houses

with bones and lived happily ever after.
