EXTERNAL CLEANINGMESABI Aluminum Tube Air to Oil Cooler
To m aintain efficiency and assure m axim um life of a
M ESA B I A lum inum Tub e O il C ooler, reasonable care
m ust be taken w hen cleaning.
For general external cleaning , a high pressure hot
w ater w asher, up to 1200 P SI, can be used. U nlike
conventional cores, you can and should get right up
next to the core w ith the w and. Starting from the air exit
side, place the high p ressure w asher nozzle next to the
fin, concentrating on a sm all area, slow ly w orking from
the top dow n. M ake sure you spray straight into the
core, not at an angle. C ontinue w ashing until the exit
w ater is free of dirt. R epeat from the opposite side.In som e cases it m ay be b est to b low out any dry
dirt w ith a high pressure (up to 1200 PSI) air gun prior
to w ashing core w ith the high pressure hot w ater w ash-
er. If there is any doubt about the cleaning m ethod to
be used , try the m ethod on a portion of a sing le tub e
first, or contact an L& M m anufacturing facility.
M any rad iator shops use a hot alkaline soa p or
caustic soda in their boil-out tanks w ith chem ical addi-
tives. Soaking in high pH solutions m ay dam ag e the
alum inum alloy dep ending on the exact characteristics
of the solution. Solutions that are either too alkaline
(pH >9.0) or too acid (pH < 5.0) are not recom m ended.
Removing MESABI Tubes
A fter thorough cleaning , as described ab ove, blow
dry the core section, then rem ove retainer clips from
top portion of tube, as show n in Fig. 1.
W ith Installation Tool N o. 42146, grasp center por-
tion of tube, as show n in Fig. 2. R otate the tool, so as
to break the tube free from the seal then raise the tub e
only enoug h to clear low er seal and sw ing tub e out just
far enough to allow tub e to b e p ulled dow n and out of
its upper seal, as show n in Fig. 3
R em ove all tub es in the row , rep eating the ab oveprocedure.
Installing MESABI Tubes

an electric or air drill can be used for this p urpose.
Note: Caution must be taken when cleaning aluminumheader plates not to damage hole surface finish.B e sure to clean the inside of the tanks out w ith airbefore installing seals. Place new seals in the cleanholes. Then, using a flat bottom rubber m allet, gentlytap each seal dow n so that the shoulder of each seal isresting on the header plate.
B efore original tubes are reinstalled, tube ends m ust be
clean of foreign m aterial. A fine grit em ery cloth or buffing
w hee l can b e used . Preca ution should be taken w hen
buffing so as to not m ar tub e. M ake sure the tub e end s
are w iped clean prior to installation.
C oat the inner hole of each seal and the outside end s
of each tub e w ith a sm all am ount of #10 hydraulic oil or
petroleum jelly. C up ped w ashers should be installed as
show n in the exploded view on page 3, prior to installing
tubes. Starting at the end of one of the row s of holes, push
the top end of a tub e (the top end of the tub e is the end
w ith the longest unfinned section) into one up per head erplate seal, as show n in Fig. 4. Place center bottom end
of tube into respective hole in the bottom seal. Push tube
dow n and into seal until the w asher is located on top of
the low er seal. This m ay b e d one b y grasping tub es b y
hand and pulling tub e dow nw ard until seated , or by using
Installation Tool, new style N o. 42146, as show n in Fig. 5.
Note: B e sure tube is properly centered in the seal beforepushing the tub e in p lace or seal dam ag e could result.
R einstall retainer clip betw een upper tw o w ashers, as
show n in Fig. 6. M ake sure w ing s on retainer clips are
parallel w ith each other to block b ypassing air.
O n som e oil coolers (typically w hen tub es are long er
than 35 inches) tube stabilizers w ill be required. B eforestarting a second row of tub es, place the center tub e sta-
bilizer, Part N o. 33570, in position. Stabilizers should be
line d up w ith the supp ort b ar loca tion . Proce ed w ith
installation of the next row of tub es, using sam e proce-
dure as w hen installing first row .

In cases where it is necessary to cleanthe inside of the oil cooler, the following
procedure can be used.R em ove all the tub es and seals from the oil
co oler as d esc rib ed on p ag e 4. Flush the
inside of the tanks w ith a high p ressure w asher
(a m ild soap can b e used but rinse thorough-
ly). B low the excess w ater out w ith air and
m ake sure the tanks are d ry. The tub e holes
should be clean and dry.
N ext rem ove the turbulators from the tube
w ith the tools show n in Fig. 1.
N ote that the tube ends have been crim ped at
each end to secure the
turbulator inside the tube.
A lso note that there is a
long, unfinned portion of
the tub e an d a sho rt,
unfinned portion.
Place the tub e end on
a piece of hard industrial
rubber as show n in Fig. 2.H olding the tube upright,
insert tool (P/N 62692) in
the end of the tube (seeFig. 3), w ith a ham m erlightly tap the tool forcing
the end of the tub e open
just far enough to allow
rem oval of the turbulator.
Care must be taken notto mushroom the tubeends. O pen both end s inthis m anner.
Typ ically, turbulators are rem oved out of the
long unfinned end of the tub e w ith a long noseplier. In this case, the tabs are facing dow n-
w ards (see Fig. 4.)Care should be taken notto kink the turbulators.
NOTE: A lthough rare, you m ay find turbulators
inserted the opposite w ay because of flow direction.
If so, please rem ove from the short unfinned end.
C lean and flush the tube w ith a high p ressurew asher. B low off w ith air and m ake sure tub esare thoroughly dry.

R eplace the turbulator by pushing the turbula-
tor through the short, unfinned end of the tube
(see Fig. 5). Push the turbulator far enough intothe tube to allow for recrim ping.
N ote: D epending on tolerances pushingthe
turbulator into the tube m ay cause kinking. A n
alternative w ould be to use a piece of w ire w ith a
hook on the end. The turbulator can be pulled
into p lace from the long unfinned end of tube.
C rim p both ends of the tube using tool (P/N
62693) and a ham m er (see Fig. 6). Lightly tap, forcing the end closed far enoug h to hold the

turbulator securely in place. (A gain, care should
be taken not to m ushroom the tube ends.)
Finally, check the tube ends for burrs, etc.
Lightly buff the tube ends or use a fine em ery
cloth to rem ove any deb ris. M ake sure the tub eends are w iped clean prior to installing. Follow
the installation procedures on pages 4 and 5 to
com plete the job .
