Wave and Current RadarMiros SM-050 MkIII

Page 8: Miros Presentation Short

SM-050 Wave and Current Radar Purpose built Pulse Doppler Radar for remote measurement of directional waves, wave spectra and surface current.

• Ease of operation

• Excellent Data Quality

• High Reliability

• Low Maintenance Cost

Available in two versions

• For onshore installations and fixed platforms

• Floating structures like semi-subs, drill ships, production and storage units with MRU. MRU = Motion Reference Unit

Page 9: Miros Presentation Short

Principles Of Operation

•The radar observes the ocean surface in a semi-circle, 180 – 450 m away.•The radar frequency gives a strong echo from the capillary waves even during heavy precipitation, normally present at wind-speeds > 2 m/s. •The water particle velocity is measured by use of Pulse-Doppler technique and provides accurate measurements even in harsh weather. situations. The wave spectrum is calculated on this basis.•This is a unique feature of the SM-050 Wave and Current Radar.

SM-140 RangeFinder™The accurate and reliable microwave sensor

Page 12: Miros Presentation Short

Miros Range FinderDeveloped in cooperation with theNorwegian Mapping Authority(Norwegian Hydrographic Service).

Measures the distance from the antenna plane to the sea surface using microwaves.

The distance is a weighted average over the footprint. The footprint size is determined by the antenna beam-width and the distance to the surface.

Up to 50 measurements per secondis averaged over a user selectableaveraging time to provide an accurate reading.

Page 13: Miros Presentation Short

Miros SM-140 RangeFinder™Purpose built vertical radar, for measuring:

• Airgap and draught

• Ocean wave profiles and tidal variations

• Water level in dams, rivers, canals & lakes

• Bridge clearance

Due to a low frequency of operation compared to laser sensors, fog, rain and water spray will not cause measurement problems. Small physical dimensions, low weight, and high long term stability are other advantages of these sensors. The sensors are available in different range versions in the range from 3 to 95

Wavex® Marine radar wave extractor• At night you don’t see the waves – Wavex® does!

• Wave and current monitoring based on radar seaclutter analysis

• Existing or dedicated X-band navigation radar in short pulse mode

Page 20: Miros Presentation Short

Wavex® applications

Wavex® for ships in transit

Real time sea state information in the ship’s vicinity. Wavex® may share the ship’s navigation radar or be fitted with a dedicated radar• Reduced heavy weather damage to ship and cargo• Improved route planning• Increased passenger comfort

Wavex® for offshore oil and gas installations

Wavex® as a sensor to Met-Ocean systems providing real time sea state information around FPSOs and fixed and floating rigs and platforms.• Marine operation guidance• Safer crane operations

Wavex® for system integration

The Wavex® computer can be the main computer or the Wavex® software can be installed on a foreign computer and provide real time sea state information to other products such as decision support systems.• Real time on site measurements• Added value to third party systems

Wavex® for coastal areas

One or several Wavex® systems connected in a network providing real time sea state information for large coastal areas or a specific location along a coast line.• Broadcast information to the public• Updated measurements for fishing boats and mariners in general.

Page 22: Miros Presentation Short

Wavex® Measurement principle• The Wavex® system measures sea state from digitized sea clutter images provided by a

marine X-band radar operated in short pulse mode. Radar signals are back-scattered off the sea surface, and the resulting image on the radar screen is known as sea clutter.

• Wave-like patterns are easily identified, and are caused by the modulation of the sea clutter cross section by the gravity waves. The modulation is due to grazing angle variation and shadowing, and there is an optimum range between approximately 1 and 10 degrees where appropriate radar image contrast is achieved.

• Square sized Cartesian sections are selected inside the radar images for further processing. Data from the Cartesian sections are combined in one directional wave spectrum.

• A minimum wind speed of 2 m/s must be present in order for Wavex® to record wave and current data. Recommended radar antenna mounting height is 15 – 90 meters above sea.
