    Teen Shopaholics

Playing football in the park, learning to dance and going for long bicycle rides were all favourite pastimes of our children.

However, things have changed quite a lot. A new research shows that nowadays a childs favourite pastime is not

playing football or dancing - its shopping, in fact, ten-year-old children are now the nations shopaholics addicted to

shopping. Almost 78 per cent of ten to 12-year-olds and 94 per cent of girls aged ten to 19 admitted their passion for

    shopping.

Most of us enjoy shopping from time to time. But the worrying results from this research are that consumerism is

making young children become shopaholics. By the age of ten, most have already been attracted into a world of

fashionable labels, brands and designer clothes. Most young people say they buy things they dont really need, but when

they go into a shop, they simply cant stop themselves.

Todays UK seven-to-11-year-old children have the possibility and the influence to spend between 600 million and 1

billion a year. Perhaps, that is why they are exposed to more than 3,000 advertising images per day.

Psychologists say that the child is just doing what children have always done: they have always wanted toys. But in the

past, parents allowed their children to have fewer toys. There have been some demographic changes that have had aninfluence on children's shopping habits. Two out of every three British families are working families, but they also work

extremely long hours. British people have the longest working hours in the EU and second longest working hours in the

developed world. What is happening is working parents feel so guilty because they are not spending enough time with

their kids so they accept their consumer demands.

The research questioned 1,000 ten to 19-year-olds on their shopping habits and the most frequent response was that

their enthusiasm for going out and buying things was the most exciting for them. But the survey also emphasizes an

interesting contradiction - although the new generation is more enthusiastic about shopping, it also realises its

consumption is very unnecessary. More than 85 per cent of children in Scotland admit they buy unnecessary things.

outs in Portugal, Ireland and Greece (and presumably Spain), the risk premium of Spanish bonds, the salary

cuts and reduction of welfare state benefits, etc. And... how about the environment? Have all those apocalyptic

warnings and dangers become things of the past? Is global warming no more a problem? And the nuclear

    energy and all its waste?

Write 150 words about the main environmental problems nowadays: do you think that environmental

policies can be affected by the economic crisis?
