Curso de Corrosión Básica
Chapter 1 is a brief overview of the definition and costs of corrosion and directs the student’s attention to the proper approach and resources that are available.

Definición de Corrosión
Es el deterioro de una substancia (usualmente un metal) o sus propiedades debido a una reacción con su medio ambiente.
Discuss how this definition applies to wood, plastic, concrete, rubber, metals, alloys, and composite materials. Bricks, block, and rocks can also corrode by this definition.

These all fit the definition of corrosion.
Upper left is SCC of stainless steel tubes.
Center is SCC of an aluminum brass bolt exposed to traces of ammonia.
Right picture is a rupture of Stainless steel pressure pipe exposed to moisture and chlorides from the atmosphere due to damaged weather barrier on insulated 8 inch stainless piping.

Tu Bolsillo
The environment becomes contaminated by spills from leaking tanks, pipes, etc.
Companies waste resources such as fuel, raw materials, and manpower. Your job is more difficult because of increased government regulations and increased responsibilities.
Your safety may be jeopardized by unexpected catastrophic corrosion failures.
Your pocketbook is effected when you must replace parts of your home or car, and pay higher taxes and fees to replace roads, bridges, dams, etc.

Most forms of corrosion can be classified as general or localized.

Corrosión
General
Tray sections from an amine sweetening tower. Note that most of the tray valves are missing from the secftions in the center of the photo.

Localized corrosion occurs at discrete sites on a metal surface. One form is shown here. Notice that the sever damage is focused on only a small area.

More detailed definitions will be covered in chapter 5.

Es General o
Localizada?
Steel rivets in copper panel. The corrosion was localized on the steel rivets.
