Why do Catholics celebrate feast days? Every family has significant events to celebrate yearly: birthdays, graduations, anniversaries. Feast days are the Catholic Church’s family events. Many feast days celebrate events in the lives of Jesus and Mary, such as the Annunciation, the Immaculate Conception, or Jesus’ Baptism. Other feast days cel-ebrate the saints as role models of holiness (Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), #1173). Celebrating feasts give us a break from regular life. The Church is a big family so there’s always some-thing to celebrate.

¿Por qué celebrant festividades los católicos? Cada familia celebra cada año acontecimientos signicativos: cumpleaños, graduaciones, aniversari-os. Las festividades son los acontecimientos famili-ares de la Iglesia Católica. Muchas festividades cele-brant eventos en las vidas de Jesús y María como la Anunciación, la Inmaculada Concepción o el Bautis-mo de Jesús. Otras festividades celebran a los santos como modelos de santidad (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (CIC). #1173). Con la celebración de las -estas descansamos de la vida cotidiana. Como la Ig-lesia es una gran familia, siempre hay algo que cele-brar.

THIRTY– SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEP-ER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE November 10th, 2019 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Some Saducees, those who deny that there is a res-urrection, came forward and put this question to Je-sus …” In this Sunday’s Gospel, the Saducees avoid their real question. Is there a resurrection from the dead or not? Rather than ask this question point blank, the Saducees try to prove their point through a roundabout, unrealistic scenario. Jesus cuts straight to the question behind the question, citing Scripture pas-sages relating to the resurrection. The Saducees are trying to trick Jesus. While we may not intend to stump God, our doubts and questions may have more in common with the Saducees than we care to admit. Doubts are part and parcel of life in a fallen world. Still, there are different ways we can word our doubts to ourselves, God, and others. When we’re struggling, truly struggling, about some article of faith, do we admit it? Or do we cloak it with other, obtuse questions to hide the nature of our concern? Have you considered leaving the Church over the hy-pocrisy of some of her members and leaders? Perhaps the real question is: “How can a place blessed by God and instituted by Christ have this evil in it? Can I rec-oncile with the concept that an institution has an ad-mixture of good and bad? What do I expect from oth-ers, from myself? What responsibility do I have to try and remedy evil in an institution I’m part of?” Per-haps you’ve wondered about the nature of romantic love, and if God is love, does He really care so much about the details of this particular scenario? Perhaps the real question is: “Can my mind wrap around the concept of a God whose law seems — on the surface, in this situation — to make people unhappy? What is the relationship between the moral law and human flourishing?” These aren’t easy questions, but they are more honest ones. This week, don’t be afraid of your deeper questions! Bring them to God, to some-one you trust, and to yourself. ©LPi

MEDITACIÓN DEL EVANGÉLIO – ALENTAR UN ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA (Gospel Meditations) 10 de noviembre de 2019 32º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario En este domingo, la Iglesia comienza a enfocarse en el final de los tiempos y en la segunda venida de Cris-to. Las lecturas aseguran que la esperanza debe estar en la vida, que es Cristo. La muerte es inevitable; to-dos pasaremos por ella. El trauma de perder a un ser querido es palpable. El dolor nos hace sentir la pre-sencia del ser amado más fuertemente. Esa sensación de presencia se siente en lo profundo del corazón, no tan solo del ser amado, sino de Jesús mismo que es la resurrección y la vida. La resurrección no es mera fantasía, es por seguro una divina presencia. El Evangelio nos enseña que existe la vida después de la muerte. Jesús dijo a los saduceos: “Él no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, y todos viven por él.” (Lucas 20:38). Ahora, ¿Qué se piensa de la muerte? ¿Qué crees tú sobre la muerte en las circunstancias que vive la sociedad? El Papa Francisco nos ayuda con la si-guiente reflexión:

Así es la esperanza cristiana: tener la certeza que yo estoy en camino hacia algo que es, no que yo quiero que sea. Esta es la esperanza cristiana. La esperanza cristiana es la espera de algo que ya ha sido cumplido y que realmente se realizara para cada uno de noso-tros. También nuestra resurrección y la de los seres queridos difuntos, por tanto, no es algo que podrá su-ceder o no, sino no es una realidad cierta, en cuanto está enraizada en el evento de la resurrección de Cris-to. Esperar por tanto significa aprender a vivir en la espera.
