    Platelet Rich Plasma

    Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

(Platelet Growth Factor Stimulates Stem Cell Production)

An Alternative Approach To Healing Tendon & Ligament Injuries

    REGENERATIVE INJECTION THERAPY

    Sports Injuries

    Degenerative Joint & Disc Disease

    Degenerative Arthritis

How Does PRP Therapy Work?To prepare PRP, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient. The blood is then

placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins and through a multi-functional process

separates the plasma from the blood producing the PRP. This increases the concentration ofplatelets and growth factors up to 500% also increasing hMSC (human stem cells)

proliferation as a function of 8-day exposure to platelet released concentrations 10x. (x=increase above native levels)

When PRP is injected into the damaged area it stimulates the tendon or ligament causingmild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. As a result new collagen begins to

develop. As this collagen matures it begins to shrink causing the tightening and

strengthening of the tendons and ligaments of the damaged area.

    What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is blood plasma with concentrated platelets. The concentratedplatelets found in PRP include growth factors among the huge reservoirs of bioactive

proteins that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. These

bioactive proteins increase stem cell production to initiate connective tissue healing, bone

regeneration and repair, promote development of new blood vessels and stimulate thewound healing process.

PRP Regenerates Tendons & LigamentsTendons connect the muscle to the bone making it possible for you to do many everyday

physical activities. Overuse or damage to the tendon over a long period of time causes the

collagen fibers in the tendons to form small tears, a condition called tendonitis. Damage to

tendons most often occurs in the knees, ankles, hips, spine, elbows, shoulders, and wrists.

Ligaments are composed of collagen fibers that hold one bone to another, stabilizing thejoint and controlling the range of motion. When a ligament is damaged, it is no longer able

to support the bones in the joint, which often leads to pain symptoms. The instability

causing the pain in your joints does not always show up on high tech imaging equipment.Through a thorough neurological and orthopedic evaluation Dr. Baum can determine which

ligaments and tendons are unstable due to injury, wear or tear.

  • 8/23/2019 Plasma Rico en Plaquetas Estudio

    3/16

Tendons and ligaments have a poor blood supply and they do not usually heal from

damage. Combined with the stress of day-to-day activities tendons and ligaments become

inefficient causing degeneration of the joint which leads to chronic pain and weakness.

Patients who experience chronic pain may not even remember when the injury occurred.

How Does PRP Compare With Cortisone Shots?Studies have shown that cortisone injections may actually weaken tissue. Cortisone shots

may provide temporary relief and stop inflammation, but may not provide long term

healing. PRP therapy is healing and strengthening these tendons and ligaments and in some

cases thickening the tissue up to 40%.

Treatment PlanPRP injections with guided ultrasound can be performed on tendons and ligaments all over

the body. Cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, degenerative disc disease, arthritic joints

shoulder pain, hip pain, and knee pain, even the smaller joints of the body can all be treated

effectively with PRP. Dr. Baum will determine whether prolo solution, Platelet RichPlasma or a combination of both will be the most effective form of treatment for you during

    his initial consult and evaluation.

Frequency Of TreatmentsWhile responses to treatment vary, most people will require 3 to 6 sets of injections of PRP.

Each set of treatments is spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Is PRP Right For Me?If you have degenerative spine or joint disease, a tendon or ligament injury, laxity or tearand traditional methods have not provided relief then PRP therapy may be the solution. It

will heal tissue with minimal or no scarring and alleviates further degeneration and builds

new tissues. There will be an initial evaluation with Dr. Baum to see if PRP therapy is right

    for you.

What Can Be Treated?Platelet Rich Plasma injections helps regenerate all areas of the body including the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles as well as

tendons and ligaments all over the body. Dr. Baum is one of the few physicians performing

PRP procedures to all areas of the spine. Our clinic treats patients with sports injuries, arthritic and degenerative joints and degenerative disc disease. More specific injuries

including tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, scoliosis, ACL tears, shin splints, rotator

cuff tears, plantar faciitis and iliotibial band syndrome may all be effectively treated with

    PRP.

What Are The Potential Benefits?Patients can see a significant improvement in symptoms as well as a remarkable return offunction. This may eliminate the need for more aggressive treatments such as long-term

    medication or surgery.

Special InstructionsYou are restricted from the use of non-steroid anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)

one week prior to the procedure and throughout the course of treatments.

Initially the procedure may cause some localized soreness and discomfort. Most patients

only require some extra-strength Tylenol to help with the pain. Ice and heat may be appliedto the area as needed.

How Soon Can I Go Back Regular Activities? PRP therapy helps regenerate tendons and ligaments but it is not a quick fix. This therapy is

stimulating the growth of new tissue requiring time and rehabilitation. Under Dr. Baums

supervision patients will begin an exercise program immediately following the firstprocedure. During the treatment program most people are able to resume normal activities

    and exercise.

    Prolotherapy

    WHAT IS PROLOTHERAPY?

Prolotherapy is a form of medical treatment in which a physician injects a specialized

solution into weakened and injured ligaments, tendons or joints. Ligaments are the strongband-like structures that hold your bones and joints together. If these ligaments have beenstretched or torn in an injury, the joints that these ligaments hold together will become

hyper mobile causing pain when the hyper mobile joint is stretched beyond its normal

limits. Many patients continue to injure themselves easily and have chronic pain until theseligaments and/or tendons are returned to their normal integrity.

The Prolotherapy solution that is injected into these weakened ligaments is a special

solution that is made up by a compounding pharmacy. This solution causes new, strongerligament fibers to be formed. This strengthens and tightens up the entire ligament, causing

the joint to no longer be hyper mobile and thereby reducing the strain on nerves, muscles

    and ligaments.

Prolotherapy has been scientifically observed to increase the size of tendons and ligaments

up to 40%. No scar tissue is formed (as would be the case in surgical procedures). Thetissue formed from Prolotherapy is strong, healthy, flexible ligament or tendon tissue. Once

the ligament or tendon has been repaired by Prolotherapy, the nerves are no longer

stretched or irritated. The procedure itself causes irritation therefore you will experiencesome pain throughout the entire process but within a few weeks following the last injection

    the pain goes away.

There is no down time like with surgery. You will be given specific exercises during your

series of injections and will be expected to stick with your normal routine so the bodys

ligaments and tendons will develop according to what you normally expect out of them.

Prolotherapy can be utilized in the entire spine (neck and back), the sacroiliac joints,

shoulders, elbows, hands, fingers, hips, knees, ankles, feet, toes and temporomandibular

joints (TMJ). This procedure can also treat degenerative joint disease; in some cases it may

prevent further joint degeneration and therefore alleviate the need for joint replacementsurgery. In this instance Prolotherapy is referred to as regenerative joint reconstruction

    therapy.

Prolotherapy is an approved form of treatment by the American Osteopathic Association

and is endorsed by the former Surgeon General of the United States, C. Everett Koop, M.D.

(You can read Dr. Koops endorsement of Prolotherapy by clicking on(Surgeon GeneralsReport). Physicians have been treating patients with Prolotherapy since the 1930s. My

father Jacob Baum, D.O. and my uncle Elmer Baum, D.O. began using Sclerotherapy

which is now more commonly called Prolotherapy in their practices in the 40s. Manypatients have failed all other forms of treatment for their injuries before they find

    Prolotherapy.

    WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

How many treatments will I need and how often do I receive them? Each patient will

have individualized needs based on their injuries but the average number of treatments isusually six to twelve. Treatments are usually given one to two weeks apart.

There are of course no guarantees with any form of medical treatment but Dr. Baum hashad excellent success in treating patients with Prolotherapy for more than 35 years. Many

patients have been relieved of the chronic daily pain that was draining them physically and

emotionally. Some patients receive maximum medical results within 12 weeks following

the last injection and others will find that they are still improving even after 6 months. Ifyou are suffering from a chronic ligament, tendon or joint injury you too may want to

    consider Prolotherapy.

If You Are Suffering From Any Of The Following Conditions

    Arthritis or Musculosketelal Pain

Arthritis and Degenerative Spine and/or Disc Disease

Acute and Chronic Neck and/or Back Pain,

    Joint Regeneration Therapy

NON-SURGICAL REGENERATION OF YOUR OLD JOINTS INTO NEW ONES

Joint Regeneration Therapy (Prolotherapy) is a reconstructive therapy to joints of the spine, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles. This can be performed on almost any joint of the body

including fingers and toes. This reconstruction procedure can be followed with PRP

(Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy which promotes growth factors increasing your own

undifferentiated mesenchymal stem cell production. The growth hormones form your ownbody give guidance to your stem cells for joint regeneration. These growth factors are

natural proteins, acting through normal gene regulation and normal wound healing feed

back control mechanisms which stimulates your body to produce new joint space and

function of a more youthful nature.

    Arthritis

Arthritis is set to become a huge U.S. health problem, says the Center for Disease

Control. Truth is, arthritis already is a huge health problem. All you have to do is ask any

general physician what the number one complaint he hears is and hell tell you arthritis.

There are many types of arthritis and all of them can now be successfully treated, but the

two most common types of arthritis are: rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Both areterribly painful, but are caused by very different problems. That means each is treated in a

    different way.

    OSTEOARTHRITIS

Chronic pain is one of the most talked about problems in the health arena and one of thebiggest causes is osteoarthritis. The pain of osteoarthritis begins gradually, progressingslowly over many years. People under 40 may have the condition with no symptoms at all.

Osteoarthritis is commonly identified by aching pain in one of more joints, stiffness, and

loss of mobility. Inflammation may or may not be present. The pain may behave like aroller coaster, with bad spells followed by periods of relative relief. It often worsens after

extensive use of the joint and is more likely to occur at night than in the morning. Stiffness

tends to follow periods of inactivity, such as sleep or sitting, and can be eased by stretching

and exercise. Pain seems to increase in humid weather. As the disease advances, the pain

may occur even when the joint is at rest and can keep a sufferer awake at night.

Unfortunately, fixing the problem hasnt been nearly as easy as describing it. As is the case

with many modalities, modern medicine can explain the problem much better than it can

solve it. But osteoarthritis is one condition where modern medicine has missed the boat.

There have been many articles written on chronic pain, although it is rarely mentioned what

the main cause of the pain is: the connective tissues of the spine and joints. Yet byaddressing the deficiency of connective tissues, the lack of collagen and weakness in

ligaments, tendons, and muscle, even people with apparent spinal degeneration (a condition

previously thought irreversible can be cured of their pain!

    NON-SURGICAL JOINT RECONSTRUCTION

A small number of physicians (presently less than 300) have turned to a non-surgical

treatment first developed in the late 1930s that has shown very promising results in thetreatment of chronic pain. By using Prolotherapy, these doctors have accelerated the rateof cartilage growth and strengthened the complete joint structure in patients with no

cartilage. Using this therapy in conjunction with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) many hip

and knee replacements have been avoided.

MANY FACTORS AFFECT CONNECTIVE TISSUE HEALING

There are many factors that affect connective tissue healing, but the next most important

factor is the nutritional and medical status of the person. People, who consume very healthy

diets and do not have systemic medical conditions, have an excellent chance to heal their

chronic pain. If they experience positive jump signs where tendons or ligaments attach tothe bones then they have almost a 100 percent chance of curing their chronic pain with

    Prolotherapy.

    UNDERSTANDING WHAT CAUSES ARTHRITIS

In acute injuries, the ligaments and tendons become torn. Ligaments function to limit therange of motion that bones can move between each other. Ligaments function to stabilize

joints and hole the joint together. Tendons function to attach a muscle to bone in order toprovide motion. Discs and cartilage serve to absorb shock and keep the bones from rubbing

against one another. If the ligaments become torn or over stretched, the joint becomes

unstable and resultant friction causes the discs or cartilage to become worn down causing a

    loss of height.

The disc and cartilage may also become worn down by repeated motion. This loss of height

causes further ligament laxity and thus more instability. The friction of the joint is a stress.Bones respond to stress by making more bone. This results in bone spurring which is the

bodys attempt to splint or stabilize the unstable joint. Degenerative disease is merely the

bodys attempt to stabilize joints as the tendons and ligaments have not been able to heal

because of lack of blood supply. If a patient has considerable degenerative arthritis, the loss

of disc or cartilage height causes a laxity of the supporting ligaments. This causes joint

instability. Non-Surgical Joint Reconstruction (Prolotherapy) has been shown to be

effective in these conditions causing the lax ligaments to become strengthened, thusstabilizing the joint and allowing for increased function and endurance. Prolotherapy is an

injection technique that tightens and strengthens these tendons and ligaments so the jointcan more normally again.

    RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Rheumatoid arthritis can be successfully treated by a combination of antibiotics and

balancing the balanced hormone therapy (BHT). (Some hormones have catabolic effects,

while others have anabolic effects (tissue building, sparing of protein, improved glucosetolerance, increased density of bones, etc.) A balance of these effects is necessary for the

body to have stability but an imbalance in either direction can lead to painful medical

    problems.

When the body has a balanced system, it breaks down old tissue and replaces it with new,

healthier tissue and the result is continued good health. thyroid hormone and cortisone havecatabolic effects, whereas insulin, growth hormone, and the sex hormones (testosterone and

    estrogen) have net anabolic effects.

Using cortisone alone creates an imbalance in the metabolic system and further

degeneration of the tissues. A combination of testosterone, estrogen, and a cortisone

derivative taken sublingually has been found to relieve the effects of this condition verysatisfactorily. The hormones act together to bring balance to the system.
