By the seventies the album had become more important than the single. Concerts

had moved from clubs and halls to stadiums.

Sex Pistols, 'God save the Queen'

God save the Queen

The fascist regime

They made you a moron

Potential H-bomb

God save the Queen

She ain't no human being

There is no future

In England's dreaming

Don't be told what you want

Don't be told what you need

There's no future, no future,

No future for you

England's punk scene had political and economic roots. The economy in

the United Kingdom was in poor shape, and unemployment rates were at

an all-time high. England's youth was angry, rebellious and out of work.

Punk rock was also a reaction against tendencies that had overtaken

popular music in the 1970s, including what the punks saw as superficial

"disco" music.

Punk bands created a simple instrumentation and anti-establishment

lyrics. Typical punk rock instrumentation includes one or two electric gui-

tars, an electric bass, and a drum kit, along with vocals. Songs tend to be

shorter than those of other popular genres. Punk rock vocals sometimes

sound nasal and lyrics are often shouted instead of sung.

Musicians created a new music style. Punk rock emerged in the

1970s as a reaction against contemporary social conditions. The first me-

tal bands were Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

Heavy metal songs are often based on:

Distortion sounds (electric guitars and electric basses).

Distortion of the guitar sound is used to create a more powerful,

"heavy'" sound.

Broken voice.

Countercultural movement.

Experimental and noisy music.

Ugly aesthetics.

The typical band includes a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist,

and a singer.

Electric guitar solos.

Lyrical ballads.

Heavy metal bands such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, increased the tempo and

made “heavier”.

5.4 Disco music

It was with the rise of disco in the early 1970s that dance music became popular. The use of

live orchestras in night clubs was extremely rare due to its expense. Disc jockeys (commonly

known as DJs) played recorded music at these new clubs.

'I Feel Love', Donna SUMMER.

Before this song, most disco recordings had been backed by acoustic

orchestras although all-electronic music had been produced for decades.

Giorgio Moroder's innovative production of this disco-style song,

recorded with an entirely synthesized backing track, utilizing a machine

called a Moog synthesizer. "I wanted to conclude with a futuristic song

and I decided that it had to be done with a synthesizer."

Features:

1. Reverberated vocal sound.

2. Syncopated electric bass.

3. Sensual content.

4. Synthesizer sounds.

5. In most disco tracks, strings, electric pianos, and electric guitars create a lush background sound.

The film Saturday Night Fever was marketed specifically to broaden disco's popularity beyond

its primarily black and Latin audiences. It was a huge success and its soundtrack became one of

the best-selling albums of all time.

By far the most successful European disco band was ABBA. This Swedish quartet -with such

hits as "Waterloo" (1974) and "Dancing Queen" (1976)- ranks as the eighth best-selling group of

all time.

'Stayin' Alive', BEE GEES.

The term falsetto is most often used in the context of singing to

refer to a type of vocal phonation that enables the singer to sing

notes beyond the vocal range of the normal voice.

Production of the normal voice involves vibration of the entire

vocal cord, with the glottis opening. With the production of

falsetto, only the ligamentous edges of the vocal cords vibrate.

'Stayin' Alive' is a disco song by the group Bee Gees from the

Saturday Night Fever motion picture soundtrack.

Recording this song was not simple. Engineer Karl Richardson

copied a few seconds of drumming from 'Night Fever', cut out the

piece of tape and glued the ends together.

ABBA: 'Chiquitita'

Chiquitita, tell me what's wrong

You're enchained by your own sorrow

In your eyes there is no hope for tomorrow

How I hate to see you like this

There is no way you can deny it

I can see that you're oh so sad, so quiet.

Chiquitita, you and I know

How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they're leaving

You'll be dancing once again and the pain will end

You will have no time for grieving

Chiquitita, you and I cry

But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you

Let me hear you sing once more like you did before

5.5 Symphonic rock

Bands abandoned the short pop single in favor of instrumentation and compositional tech-

niques more frequently associated with jazz or classical music in an effort to give rock music the

same level of musical sophistication and critical respect.

Songs contained symphonic influences, extended musical themes, philosophical lyrics and

complex orchestrations. Some artists performed rock arrangements of themes from classical mu-

sic or composed original pieces in classical composition structures.

'Bohemian Rhapsody', Queen.

Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970, originally consisting of

Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon

(bass guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums and vocals).

A distinctive characteristic of Queen's music is the vocal harmonies which are

usually composed of the voices of May, Mercury, and Taylor best heard on the

studio album A Night at the Opera. Some of the ground work for the

development of this sound can be attributed to their former producer Roy

Thomas Baker, and their engineer Mike Stone.

Besides vocal harmonies, Queen were also known for multi-tracking voices to

imitate the sound of a large choir through overdubs. For instance, according to

Brian May, there are over 180 vocal overdubs in 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

Many Queen songs were also written with audience participation in mind,

such as 'We will Rock You' and 'We Are the Champions'.
