Geography

It is located in the Central Western Region of the country, extends approximately between the parallel 08 ° 06 'N and 09 ° 50' north latitude, and the meridians 68 ° 30 ', 70 ° 11' west longitude. It has a surface of 15,200 km² representing 1.67 % of the national territory.

The dominant vegetation is the savanna, but there are also gallery forests along the river curves, and dense jungles in the Andean foothills. There abound fine woods that constitute an important source of wealth, as represented by the Chaparro, mahogany, Salvio, eucalyptus, pine and teak logging

The fauna is represented by: frontinos bears, jaguars, (both species at risk of extinction), armadillos, scarlet macaws, rabipelados, the Araguatos monkeys, deer, 'cunaguaros' (pumas and collared anteaters. There are birds like helmeted curassow, tucusitos, cristofue and siskins. There is one of the largest butterfly in the world: the Thysania Agrippina, with 30.5 cm wing spread.

DEMOGRAPHY

For the year 2001 the State had a population of 725,740 inhabitants, which accounted for 3.34 % of the national total. It has a growth rate of 2.1 % per annum, and a density of 57.5 inhabitants per km2According to the census of 2011 the population of Portuguese is 876,496 inhabitants, of whom 432,578 are female and 443,918 male.

The city of Acarigua in the north, represents the largest conurbation of the state, being the second in importance in the center-west of the country, together with Araure form a conurbation with over 300,000 inhabitants (Census 2001).

HISTORY OF PORTUGUESA

The name of the state comes from the Portuguese river, which crosses the entity. A legend, that got this name due to the fact that a woman who hails from Portugal was drowned in its waters. Diego Ruiz of Vallejo and Juan de Villegas began in 1549, the exploration of the land in the middle of lacordillera de Los Andes. Years later, on November 3, 1591 Juan Fernandez de León founded Holy Spirit of the Valley of Guanaguanare, Guanare today.

HISTORIC CHARACTERS

José Antonio PáezJosé Antonio Páez Herrera, also known

as "The Centaur of the Plains", "The Lion of Payara", "The Enlightened Citizen" and "Taita", was born in the population in the current Curpa Portuguesa State, on 13 June 1790. He comes from a family of Canary origin, poor and large. He was the son of John and Mary Victorio Páez Violante Herrera. He lived in a modest house at the side of the river his hometown

Rafael Ramon González, Pintor

He was born in Araure, Portuguesa State, and the November 24 for 1,894 and after not a few difficulties achieving study at the National Academy of Fine Arts. Disenchanted of the teaching of then, and pleasantly surprised by the painting of Rafael monasteries and other artists of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, leaves the school curriculum.

Teresita HerediaHe was born in the village of Ospino in the year 1797, that is to say, I was 19 years old when it was processed. She was a widow and declares that her husband was José Antonio Agüero. The Portuguese gastronomy can be seen in the mediterranean cuisine and, like this one, the three themes on which the Portuguese food are the bread, wine and olive oil. However, also note the influence of the Portuguese former colonies of Asia, Africa and America (Brazilian cuisine) , especially in the use of spices, which include the piri piri, the paprika and the cinnamon. There are also influences of the Berber cuisine (mainly Moroccan revisited according).

Portuguese is one of the prairie states of Venezuela where there is still the traditional bandola llanera, special rhythmic cadence. Also echo the four, the maracas and the harp, maximum sound of joropo. Some of the musical expressions of the state are the Chipola passage and the llanero.

The toros coleados in the sleeves: it is an interesting exhibition of dexterity of the llanero stout man, who must combine their ability as a jockey with the force to overthrow the bull which runs by a corral.

The cockfights and the juego de Bolas creole: are other recreational activities typical of the plainsmen.

The carnivals of the city of Guanare: represent a tradition that goes back to the beginning of the twentieth century, when many families guanarenas dressing and shared with the neighbors. At present, these celebrations continue with the name of "Masquerade, Carnival of Venezuela", where for four days the population is bursting out into the streets with joy to witness the colorful floats, the parade and the costumes.

Former prison of Guanare: ancient building located in front of Plaza Bolivar in Guanare

Park Los Samanes: was built in 1983. It is considered as a historic site because the army of the Liberator Simon Bolivar camped under its leafy Los Samanes in the days of the Admirable Campaign.

José Antonio Páez Park: In the heart of the city. Account with an extension of 13.8 hectares, of which 5% are developed according to accommodate a variety of activities that are linked to the tourist development of the Portuguese state.

Historical Sites

Casacoima. - (Guanare) colonial building dating from the eighteenth century. In the beginning was the headquarters of the Guipuzcoana Company and later on the headquarters of the Royal Tobacconists Tobacco. Then, in 1914, was transformed into presidential house by general Gomez Perez Soto. Its name commemorates the adventure in the Lagoon of Casacoima in which took part the Liberator

San Francisco Convent. - (Guanare) construction of the XVIII century of great historical value. In the year 1756 was authorized as the headquarters of a monastery. After independence, the inhabitants of the city requested the establishment of a school in this place. On 16 May 1825 was created the first school in Venezuela and since that time, you have always been linked with education. It is currently the headquarters of the Vice President of the University
